I Feel Happy That I Can Finally Admit I Can’t Wear Pastels

NYX This Is Milky Gloss Lip Gloss ($8.50) launched in eight shades this week for Ulta Platinum and Diamond Members and everyone else can haul them on March 7th. I immediately cringed when I read “milky” and the marketing didn’t help either, “get the milk look”. Ok, so there are people out there that can totally pull off a milky pink lipgloss I’m sure! I’m just not that person. When I apply shades like this on my lips I look like rigor mortis set in with great vengeance and furious anger. I mean, I think at some point in my life I thought walking around looking like a living dead girl wasn’t a bad thing. Nowadays I realize I can’t pull off pastels and milky shade even though Spring seasonal shades convinced me for a while it was possible. But no, shades that are Easter egg hued are not meant for my eyes nor my lips.

I do want to say there may be one shade in this launch that might just work for me! Cherry Skimmed looks like a delightful mauve-y nude pink! Perhaps that could work out for me.

For those interested NYX This Is Milky Gloss Lipgloss are available in eight shades and provide a glassy finish with a sweet vanilla milkshake fragrance and flavor.

Shade include:

  • Cherry Skimmed (dusky pink mauve)
  • Cookies & Milk (cool beige nude)
  • FO-MOO (sheer baby blue)
  • Lilac Splash (sheer baby purple)
  • Milk & Honey (sheer light honey)
  • Milk It Pink (sheer baby pink)
  • Milk the Coco (chocolate brown)
  • Moo-dy Peach (sheer coral)

Can you wear pastels?

Do you think these NYX This is Milky Gloss Lipglosses are flattering?

Milky works on very few. Remember the ucky watercolor glosses a few years back? I think they were a Bite collection, maybe not. At times milkies can look ok from a distance, but the pooling in the lip lines is molto grosso.

    • Isabella Muse

Yup! no thanks on those too! 😀 Oddly they pool almost right away and always look patchy and outline lines you don’t even have on your lips haha!

  • OliveUnicorn

There’s so many that I want lol the purple and blue and also the pink and coral ✨

    • Isabella Muse

you are much better a person than I am! I just can’t do these without looking like a zombie!

I ordered the cherry and chocolate one from Ulta. Milk is my favorite drink so I could not resist.

    • Isabella Muse

let me know how they are when you get them! Those are like the two most wearable shades imho! The others I can’t do!

      • Kittychatalot

Spoiler Alert: they Stunk. No pigment and no lovely scent like the Butter Glosses. I have already returned them to Ulta.

I’m looking at that brown one. Brown lip colors work well on me so I was going to check that one out but I need to see it in person before I decide. I don’t do well guessing at colors I only see online and if Ulta can’t think of a way to make it impossible to see the colors (like taping lipstick bullets closed so you can only see the case with NO idea at all of the color inside) I might get the brown one. I’m glad shiny colors are back. I was over it with matte lips about 2 weeks after they were started!

    • Isabella Muse

I think that I can work with too but the others sadly not so much! I HATE mattes with a passion!

Long-time reader, first-time poster! I’m fully obsessed with milky lip glosses, because they’re the perfect ‘top coat’ for a Korean or Japanese lip stain. Bobbi Brown’s original Lip Gloss formula in White looked terrible on its own, but formed the most glowing, subtle lip when dabbed over a bright red stain. Try a milky gloss over a bright lip, and you’ll see what I mean! Definitely going to try these NYX glosses…

    • Isabella Muse

hey kate! thanks for coming out to chat today 🙂 and thanks for the longe readership! Ooo interesting! I own a lot of lip stains! Maybe I can make work like that ;-D thanks for the tip!

I caved and got the Cherry Skimmed mainly because of the description of the scent 😀 I agree with you about the other colors, no way I could pull off that look anymore. I got a free lip pencil with it too! Here’s hoping it works out.

      • Lisa Marie

Yeah… the color is mostly okay, but a tad bit chalky. The texture is pretty good, but I am not getting ANY of that super-yummy-milkshake scent that was promised at ALL. So, overall it’s a big fat meh.

        • Isabella Muse

eh you cured my lemmings for that shade! I can’t do chalky! thanks for the info! Seriously saved a lot of people $

    Isabella,
This is a hard pass for me. The milky lip look on me comes across as “zombie jizz lips” and it’s NOT a flattering look. Just like I can’t pull of the matte lip look as it turns into “butthole lips”. Argh, just thinking about matte lipstick makes me itch to put on some lip balm. Both looks are gorgeous on the people who can pull it off, I’m just not one of them. I’m sorry if I’m being too crude! I can get away with pastel eye shadow looks with some purples, blues and greens. I find that the right shades can really make my brown eyes pop. I usually stay away from pinks since they can make me look ill and oranges are still a work in progress to see if I can make them work. Have you tried pastels on your eyes? We have very similar eye, skin and hair coloring is why I ask. On a side note, I LOVE when you do swatches because chances are if it works on you color wise then it’ll work on me. Also, I’ve had better luck with a soft wash of pastel on the eyes versus something bold. A go to look I used to rock daily years back was a light pastel wash over the lid with black eyeliner. It seemed to somehow make my eyes look more awake if that makes any sense.

    • Isabella Muse

LOLLLL! that’s new! Zombie jizz lips but fairly accurate! ;-D I have tried pastels on my eyes and for a long time I loved them but now I think they look awful for some reason! Kinda drowns me out and make me feel like I’m wearing clown makeup! Aw that’s awesome I love hearing I have a skin/hair twin out there that my swatches actually work for! I have to admit a soft wash of lighter pink or gold works for me but I really can’t do light lilacs or baby blues! Those drown me out badly!

  • Lisa

Pastels look horrible on me, too! Instead of making my skin appear golden, pastels give me a jaundiced look. The Cherry Skimmed is described as dusty pink mauve, and I find mauves to be wearable.
