Essence Before Hyaluronic Acid Makes For the Best Moisture Retention

Now that you know how to apply hyaluronic acid the right way after reading my article a few weeks ago I thought I’d get into essence. In my article I discussed applying hyaluronic acid on damp skin. Please, don’t apply your HA on dry skin! You’re defeating the purpose if you apply it on dry skin because the the acid immediately goes to work drawing moisture out of your skin and if you’re dry it’s going to suck every single bit of moisture from your skin resulting in a tight feeling. You remember when Malcolm McDowell stick that dude with the disposable water bottle in Tank Girl and sucked the water clean out of his body? That’s what HA does on dry skin.

Misting your face with your favorite facial mist prior to applying hyaluronic acid works a treat but…

Use your essence! After washing your face go ahead and tone with your favorite toner now you wanna apply your favorite essence on top of that and right after when your skin is still damp go in with your HA. CosRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence is my ride or die which does have more of a gel consistency but if you like a more watery or liquid essence you can also check out some of other favs like Innisfree Fermented Soybean Firming Energy Essence, Numbuzin No. 3 Dewy Radiance Essence Toner, or Missha Super Aqua, Ultra Hyalron Skin Essence (AMAZING!).

Don’t wait for your essence to absorb just go right in with your HA of choice. My personal favorite is Hada Labo Gokujyun Hydrating Lotion but use any HA you like. The essence leaves your skin damp enough for the HA to have something to pull water from which results in plumper skin and a more hydrating feel. None of that weird tightness you may have experience when using it on your dry skin!

What essences do you enjoy using in conjunction with your favorite HAs?

My mind is blown right now. I typically do wash, straight on with the Hado Labor on damp/wet face, and then my Cosrx Snail 96. I’ll try switching it up tonight!
