I Dunno Who Needs To Hear This But Stealing is Stealing

There’s this new filter on Tiktok called the “Versailles Run” which is a woman in a formal ballgown running through the Palace of Versailles. People have used it in many creative and funny ways.

I did come across one Tiktok that I won’t re-post as I don’t want the person posting it to get hate for it but it sort of made me really question humans for a second there. It said something along the lines of, “Me leaving Sephora after returning a Dior Foundation after refilling it with drugstore foundation”. That wasn’t the exact wording but it was along those lines…! Again, just trying to protect her identity here and not cause any bullying. What she does is her business however, since she put it out there for the world to see I feel like I can agree to disagree with her.

Ok, funny, haha…! Problem is she was readily admitting to doing this in the comments and over 3k people are over there patting her on the back for doing it and even people saying they were going to try it with her encouraging them to do it. Even worst people admitting they emptied out Urban Decay Setting Spray into a bottle and returned water and other “creative” ways they’ve screwed the system. Wow. Mind blown.

One of the saddest things about the situation was some people did step up to say something about this being wrong only to have a million people snark them out about being Karens or how Sephora is a big business and the can afford to lose money.

I’m so sorry I have to take the moral high ground here for a minute.

This is never ok to do. Stealing is stealing no matter how you do it. If you can’t afford something I’d say look for a cheaper duplication of it. There are so many wonderful bloggers, Instagrammers, and influencers out there that provide dupes for just about any product around. Going so far as to buying a bottle of foundation, emptying it out, and refilling it with something cheaper is really beyond the beyond. I don’t care how anyone feels about big corporations or brands. This simply isn’t right.

The corporation is not getting screwed here. The consumer doing this is screwing themselves when prices get raised because the return ratio is too high and most importantly, they end up screwing the employees who end up having issues if their return levels are at an unusually high mark. The excuse of, “Oh they throw out returns anyway!” really isn’t a GOOD excuse at all. Why is anyone even creating such an excuse for outright stealing? Brands and major department stores see product returns as an eroder to overall profits. Places like Sephora have had to revise their return policies because of this. Even Nordstrom who is notoriously generous about returns and lenient about them has had to change their policy. People are only hurting themselves doing stuff like this and it makes me sad that the excuse is, “Sephora can afford to lose money!”

Sigh.

Ok, jumping off my high horse now.

But I had to rant for a second.

Wow. It never would have even occurred to me to do something like that. People can be absolutely vile.

    • Isabella Muse

I’m trying hard to be as non-judgemental as possible but I was sort of steaming when I saw this. 🙁

      • Miko

I wouldn’t have ever thought that people would be doing this. I’m not a fan of returning items so this is very crazy to me. SMH. I’m sure we’ll see a price increase in the near future.

      • JoElla

Girl, be judgey as you wanna be! I totally am. WTF is wrong with people!?

  • kimkats

Never be afraid or sorry to take the moral high ground, Muse. You can never go wrong doing that. And you are SO right – stealing is stealing is stealing; it doesn’t matter who you are stealing from. You’re still stealing. It doens’t matter if they “can afford it” it’s still stealing.

Kudos to you for calling this out. What’s wrong is wrong, regardless who the victim of the theft is.

    Boo-yah, Muse!!

    • Isabella Muse

The moral high ground can be hard 😀 Agreed…! Just think if you can’t afford it that’s fine but do some research and find something within your budget don’t go and buy it only to return something completely different 🙁 That’s stealing no matter how you splice it 🙁

      • Amelia

As a very long time subbie of yours, I am SO glad and impressed to see you speak out on something like this. I don’t at all look at it as some negative thing to take the moral high ground. I truly believe if more people had the integrity and cojones to do so, we’d have a much more honorable, reputable, kind and safe society.
I mean think about it- why is doing what’s morally right something to apologize or even feel nervous about at all??! You should be proud to have integrity! As a reader and online friend of sorts, it makes me proud of and impressed by you even more.

Look back over even just the past year of crap morally loose or bankrupt people have justified in the same way- as if they’re “sticking it to the man” or that “capitalists/corporatists can afford it” or the worst- as if it’s some sort of owed reparations (an utterly disgraceful and disrespectful excuse!)- they are all just weak, zero integrity, morally empty and low down dirty excuses for stealing. The fact that this generation of tiktokkers have this gross behavior trending is beyond disgusting. They have no idea how damaging tampering with products and stealing like this is. We have seen some just plain shameful stuff being done. And they brag about it, like they have no shame. Why??? Why does this gen of social media users get iff bragging about being jerks and doing dirty, gross things? Why are they encouraging it as something cool, when the dirty truth is, nowhere near as much product is actually damaged out as you think!?! A lot is returned to the shelf based purely on an eyeball check. Some (ALOT ACTUALLY) is returned to be resold at places like Nordstrom Rack, TJM, Ross, Costco, eBay, etc???? Meaning stuff can be contaminated. Tampered with. Effing gross!!

I’ve worked in 2 stores where this was rampant and people just tried to stuff it under the rug while we employees were all being screwed for returns against us, the amount of things abused and returned and the shortages we as a unit racked up. It was absolutely discouraging and felt straight up abusive to have staff meetings and be made to feel bad for these numbers when it was not the staff at fault for the obvious daily rampant theft and low store numbers.

And no matter what anyone says, we ALL (as consumers) pay/are paying/will pay for this disgusting behavior.

Please, anyone just realizing this stuff is happening- please, if you care about our beloved beauty interests, industry, even our economy and the fact that we are all so 1st world blessed to be able to afford these little luxuries- please educate those you know who may not see the forest for the trees. I have been shocked to discover that friends/acquaintances talk about things like this, completely unaware of the repercussions and big picture. Everyone just wants to hate on capitalism or big business or corporate america because it’s “trendy” (I guess?) or because there are influencers and swaths/forums of people who are big on pushing this crappy narrative. But they don’t even think twice that it is wholly contributing to so much collateral damage to people’s livelihoods, the economy as a whole and to the way we are treated when we shop at these stores.

Thank you Isabella for bringing this up. I can only pray more people start to see the bigger picture here.
Everything adds up- even the little seemingly inconsequential things that go on due to times of unrest, uncertainty, protest or social narratives being constantly pushed at us to sway and misconstrue our own independent thought. Little lies, little thefts, little manipulated storylines and events all add up to manifest to a larger consequence. People are very constricted, uncertain, anxious and internally at dis-ease about so much now a days, they are tightly wound from a year of being imprisoned by this plague, illness, constant fear and just feeling afraid and unsure. They don’t want to say the wrong thing because they’ve been shown or experienced a hostile social media environment that has spread to the real world- we don’t want any drama, we don’t want to be attacked, we don’t want to have to defend ourselves for wondering or asking innocent questions. So many are super tightly wound and bottling up all this distention and uncomfortable energy born out of fear. But when we go thru the year we have, we’ve been compliant, we’ve bent and been obedient and everything we can to be safe and keep those around us safe and fight this virus nobody asks for. We are for the most part good, decent, caring and moral people. We want to do everything we can to help get this this and move on with our lives. But we can’t allow the negative fraction of society to take advantage of our society, our economy and all of us as truly good natured individuals, by committing immoral acts, no matter what the excuse. It’s just not right, fair or just. We deserve better after all we have all sacrificed as a whole. We deserve integrity because we act with integrity.

Sorry for the rant, I truly do not wish to complain and drag… but after the last 3 months of brutal conditions in working in environments where the staff (those that even showed up and aren’t sitting at hike collecting UI) are treated like crap from customers (rampant and unaddressed, openly obvi shoplifting, cussing, disrespectful attitudes when we’re just all trying to do our jobs and pick up extra tasks to cover the workload), treated without much support from corporate who seem to care more about being woke than sticking up for and supporting us, and from seeing constant echo chambers of people online who comment on things but seem to not realize the bigger picture and that all of this behavior does indeed hurt good people, I am tired.

I should add, I only feel ok expressing this here because the beauty communities on SM, YT, Reddit and most commentaries of online forums/blogs have become so infused with people who don’t even seem to care how this overwhelmingly affects so many beauty enthusiasts in some way. We don’t want uncomfortable treatment, many of us who love and work in beauty just want to do our jobs and have jobs to go back to. We don’t want even more strict or harsh return policies or increased prices. We don’t want people cancelled and hurt for stupid reasons. We don’t want something so fun and beautiful to become infected with this ugly moment in time society is in.

Thank you if you’ve read this far and for caring about this interest/hobby of ours that has always been a beautiful escape from the madness.
I pray integrity and honor starts to trend sooner than later.

  • Linda

I’m with ya Muse. You go girl! Unfortunately, doing the “right thing” is often frowned upon.

    • Isabella Muse

isn’t that sad 🙁 How is being honest and taking the right path in life frowned down on? Sheesh! We are all doomed 🙁

  • Christina

“The consumer doing this is screwing themselves when prices get raised because the return ratio is too high.” This is exactly why prices go up! And no, corporations are not so big they can afford to loose money–when they lose money, we get the brunt of it by price increases, job layoffs, etc.

How far have we sunk that people can condone this attitude? And how can someone boast about stealing, because however you look at it, it is stealing. You didn’t pay for it. I truly blame social media for this shift in values…

This just makes me so mad.

    • Isabella Muse

I was so pissed about it and I struggled about posting it. I was going to post some of the comments made too and white on the names but I didn’t want to start some sort of war about it. Why in the world would anyone do this is beyond me and people patting them on the back about it being so clever and genius. Really? Really? This is genius? Wow! I don’t want to be a genius if that’s what genius looks like.

      • MDW

I know a mother who teaches her daughter to be like this and they are two of the most miserable and unhappy people I know. They keep thinking life will be better for them when they do this and are more than disappointed when the outcome is the opposite.

And they are always suspecting other people are trying to cheat them!

        • Isabella Muse

when you’re guilty I guess you think everyone else is too!

    • kjh

Exactly. I was going to say see paragraph six. You two nailed it. 1000 years ago I had a First date with the hottest guy imaginable. This guy was TDF and ivy league. We went shopping for dinner. He stole a high-end cut of meat and put it down his pants. I did nothing then; I was so dumbfounded. When he asked for a second date I said forget it! I can’t believe you stole that meat! One of my coworkers at night job steals snacks and drinks. That comes out of resentment at the company. the company does not suffer. At dollar tree they make the merchandise smaller because they can’t change the price. And when you get caught you get fired. it it’s lose-lose all the way around. I also think many people who steal do it as a thrill thing. that’s no good either. The psych speculation about that behavior Predicts increasingly bad behavior. The direction that thrill seekers often take is not good at all. Virtually every woman on killer couples/ID discovery starts with thrill seeking. not good. It is said that one in every 10% is a sociopath. Maybe we should not be surprised.

    • Amelia

      Amen.

How did shitty people get a platform to brag about their crap behavior. And why are there tons of people encouraging and applauding it. Especially be aware when public figures endorse or encourage this behavior and ask yourselves why.

Why are there people who benefit from people who do corrupt, immoral and illegal things and why are they encouraging no bail, no arrests for stealing, no arrests for looting, and such, which these jerks are obvi taking advantage of, at the cost to the rest of us.

This is why rewarding bad behavior is bad. This is why letting people get away with stuff isn’t cool for the rest of us just trying to morally and legally get by. If we can even try to afford it.

      God help us.

  • TropicalChrome

What kills me is that they’re *proud* of it. That they think it’s something to boast about in public.

  • Jordan

It baffles me that there are people who do things like this. Meanwhile, I feel overwhelming guilt for returning something that breaks me out or doesn’t work for my skin type because I know they’re going to have to throw it away.

    • Isabella Muse

I rarely do it because of that exact reason! I’m over like, “This is probably going to cause a problem for the store and the employees!” So I just toss it in a bin, when the bin has a few items I’ll give it to my mom and she takes it to her senior group or church group and the ladies there adore it.

  • dia

What is wrong with people? I hate humans. Another thing I think is stealing is when people buy stacks of fancy clothes from places with generous return no-questions- asked-you-don’t-even-need-a-receipt policies like Nordstroms and Kohls, wear them once, sweat in them, get make up on the collars, get crotch odor on the pants, and then return every item. I mean really… ugh.

  • Melaina

There is so much wrong with what they are doing. Stealing, lying, cheating and being proud of it is awful. Not only is this wrong on so many levels – SO WRONG – but the stores that compound that wrong by re-selling a product, that is now not even the actual product. Because, while we’d like to believe they wouldn’t, if the previous Ulta fiasco has shown us anything, some morally questionable employees will put them back on the shelf. Now you’ve got more consumer hurt happening.
    People are the worst.

    • Isabella Muse

I am not 100% convinced all stores toss things out. I truly believe some put it back on the shelves and yes, the Ulta situation proves that! 🙁

    • Jane

Pretty sure that Ulta thing was a corporate policy on the down low, or the result of corporate policies. I’m not knocking hourly employees.

  • Monica

I don’t think in my country (Mexico) we could get away with that, firstly because no store other than Sephora admits returns of makeup, not even if the product is defective (a friend of mine purchased a Estee Lauder foundation and it was rancid, yuk! And still they would not reimburse her ) And Sephora here is very stingy with their return policy, they do check the product first to their satisfaction. In any case, I would not do something like this. I don’t steal from others because I feel like it is beneath my dignity, you know? Lemme jump off my high horse too lol.

    • Isabella Muse

Same in Europe! Returns on makeup are a big no no! And if we keep up like this may happen in the USA too 🙁 No no Monica! You’re right. Dignity is everything! Sometime humans just fail at having it. Be proud you have that 🙂

  • Jody

It’s mind-blowing that people think that fraud, that stealing like this is okay. UGH.

  • Bluz

OMG. It never even occurred to me to do anything like this. The only reason I return cosmetics is if I have an allergic reaction. I do read ingredients but my sensitive skin likes to react to things anyway. Well eventually karma will get those people in some way. Smh

  • IG

Thank you for calling it out, Muse! It is just so sad to see people not only cheat the system, but the wrong doing is being boasted about?! There will come a day when return is on longer an option, much like many parts of the world. Shame on these cheaters!

  • Frozendiva

The foundation bottles usually aren’t that easy to empty. The ‘thief’ in question must have had a lot of time on her hands. Wonder if she will get away with it. Sephora can take action and ban her from the store. It is theft, it is lousy, and crummy. I would expect some packaging redesigns.

With the amount of ‘returns’, I would also expect some additional restocking fees being added. It is a challenge to buy online and there will be some loss because of shipping damage.

Being proud of this? Sure. It is the same when folks buy a dress for a party or evening out, keep the tag on, and return it Monday. The store does catch on.

I have rarely returned makeup. One EL lipstick that had melted either in the factory or while in the truck. I did not buy it on a hot day, my car was parked in an underground parkade. Nothing that would have melted it. I also returned a Dior lipstick because the tube did not work and fell out of the package. The SA could easily have prevented this by checking the package.

Some makeup lines do give free 10 day samples of foundation or serum or whatever. The girl could have gone to a few stores and gotten a couple of samples.

The average customer will get the hit – increased prices, online shoppers being given some sort of return fee, more pushy sales associates who don’t want casual browsers.

    • Isabella Muse

True! Studio is probably easy to refill I would guess? Some electronics still have a restocking charge it would be sad if they did it on makeup! I very rarely return as well! I end up giving it away. Apparently, no one believes that prices will get raised. The excuse is “the brand names the price not sephora” true…but with a high return ratio there’s a big chance the price will go up via the brand so, same same situation!

  • JP

Thank you for this. I am truly appalled that a person would do what they posted about and then brag about it. It’s just sad.

  • Nancy M.

Hi Muse, I agree with you completely. Stealing is stealing!!! I could not enjoy anything I stole…I would feel too guilty! Hopefully, those who engage in this type of theft will eventually come to realize who this is wrong on so many levels. I would rather wear a Maybelline foundation I purchased honestly as opposed to a Dior foundation I stole. Enough said. I absolutely adore your blog! Thanks for all of your hard work!!!!

    • Isabella Muse

likewise Nancy! I’m honest to a fault I wouldn’t be able to sleep if I did something like this! Aw Nancy thank you so much that means the world to me! Truly!

  • kathy

I am so disheartened to hear about this. Thank you, Muse. People can be so horrible. I am such a believer in karma.

    • Isabella Muse

I am as well Kathy! What goes around does come around!

  • Staci

This is gross. Bragging about it is worse. It tells you a lot about this person’s morals. If they are so proud of their theft, imagine the other stuff they justify to themselves.

  • Janis H

No manners, have no integrity. Since she had put it on the internet it’s free game. Hope no future employers check that?!
Yes that is stealing. She did action , there will be a reaction to her . Would not want to be around he when that happens .
Thank you muse for all that you do in the blog Janis H

  • Swoozy

What a horrible thing to do and how sad that there are so many people with no moral center. I once bought a popular Chanel lipstick. Blind buy. It wasn’t the right undertone for me, but I didn’t return it because that’s on me and I knew they’d toss it at the store where I ordered it from. People need to own their choices. No one is a hero for stealing makeup or beauty items.

  • Rio

Well said Muse. Rationalize it all u want but it’s just plain stealing. Stores should be able to permanently ban anyone who does this. Just going to ruin it for the rest of us

    • Isabella Muse

I wish they did but all that happens is honest folks end up getting the brunt of it.

  • Kris

How low can you go? I guess none of these people believe in Karma. They might in the future; if they’re smart enough to realize it.

  • Eileen

I agree 100%. Stealing is stealing. Glad you put the post up!

  • Holly

I appreciate you saying something about this and you’re right, people making jokes out of filming themselves stealing isn’t funny at all!

  • kellly

Wow. I hadn’t heard of this before, and I agree with you. How low can someone get? If they think Sephora makes too much money, then don’t.shop.there., huh? That’s a lot simpler than scamming and thinking you’re so clever for doing it.
Shame on her and shame on anyone who thinks this is cute.

  • MDW

They think it is a one sneaky step forward but it is actually three steps back. They probably don’t invest in using the product well. If they perceive an unrelated insult, they are triple offended. So much for the temporary emotional fix. Now they are more depleted than before they did the bait and switch.

  • Jane

You’re not on a high horse, Muse, you’re on the moral high ground. I cannot condone theft; we’re all worse off when theft and corruption – and that’s what those refillers are, corrupt – becomes the default. There are things that we are rightly moving past as a society (or trying to), and then there are things that should be held to. Good on ya.

    • Isabella Muse

which isn’t always a good place to be as it puts me out there for bulling but sometimes you just gotta speak how you feel and I simply don’t condone stealing no matter who you’re doing it from. This is wrong, I don’t care who feels right about it, I see it as wrong and refuse to think differently about it! Thank you for agreeing with me Jane!

  • Margaret D Jackson

Holy crap and wow! I would never, ever in a million years have thought about doing this. To me, it’s just wrong and 100% agree with you, it’s stealing. That people feel totally fine admitting to having done this before and citing examples? It actually makes me sad.

    • Isabella Muse

Me too. I want to always think good of my fellow humans but sometimes they make me upset!

  • Janet

Wow! I 100% agree with what you said, Isabella. And I have to say that I sincerely wish people with devious minds like that would put their brains to solving problems for the good of society rather than using their brainpower to cheat and steal. Can you imagine the possibilities?

    • Jane

This is such an important point. These people (and please hear me dripping derision as I say it) put so much energy into their crimes and evading detection. Imagine if they put some energy into being happy with what they have and can afford, rather than dumbly wanting “the best.” Imagine if they applied that kind of inventiveness to something worthy rather than selfish ends.

I just finished reading The Address Book (highly recommend) and the book talks, among other things, about the people trying to get addresses for people without addresses and for people without homes. There are all these complex problems out there in need of people with creativity (and sadly, these makeup thieving criminals are very creative). It’s so much misapplied energy.

  • Denise

Thank you for posting this. I think those people are justifying stealing and it is so wrong. Sometime back a blogger posted about taking handfuls of mascara spoolies and disposable
lip brushes from Sephora. Yes, those are small things, but if we all did that, eventually prices would go up. Come on people, it’s not all about you.

    • Isabella Muse

Or they wouldn’t have them available anymore. Most stores here in NY don’t put them out anymore 🙁

  • Dee

You are right to call this out and it isn’t being judgmental. What she did was wrong, period. It’s stealing and I’m saddened that so many defended her actions! What are we coming to that this is ok? It’s not about Sephora being a big company, it’s about the rest of us paying for people doing things like this.

  • Mary

I admit I spent my early 20’s punk rock period (1984-1985) shoplifting until was finally busted and had to do community service. I later got hired as loss control for a vintage shop and got to bust shoplifters because I knew their behaviours! It was a great turnaround and quite satisfying. If you don’t want to expose them, send me a message. I’d be happy to send the info along to whomever needs to see it. Behind big companies are entrepreneurs who took chances to build their companies, a lot of the time against all odds and have lots of employees who literally depend on honesty for the system to work. This is not about being a cute little, daring Robin Hood character. It’s about being a little shit who ruins everything for everybody. This is a big story and covering for them makes us also culpable. Do the right thing!

    • Isabella Muse

No judgement Mary! You changed and for the better and that’s the most important part! And yes, the entire “robin hood” persona of stealing from the rich is bs. I’m sorry, I don’t care who it is you’re still stealing and it still damages things in someway so just do the damn right thing!

    • Jane

I believe there’s a time and a place for Robin Hood theft, but a crime in which the thief prospers ain’t it. I’m glad you reformed!

    • Amelia

Mary- I think you are awesome.
You are so right that the shady behaviors and true injustices need to be exposed. There shouldn’t be people glorifying theft m/crime and taking advantage of anyone/thing and profiting from it whether it be by clicks, likes, views, however corrupt sectors of tech and marketing reward and monetize them for it, while the rest of us work, sweat, save, sacrifice and responsibly spend our money to support the economy that affects us all.

So long as this crap behaviour is rewarded- from monetized sites, clicks, views, marketing partnerships, propped up “Influencers” and even public figures openly supporting unethical “role model influencers” and ground game criminals over working, tax paying citizens, they will continue to spread their bs crimes and encourage it, to further dumb down those weaker thinking and easier to influence people/generation and continue the degrading and destabilization of society.

People are now so intimidated and feel bullied, shamed, threatened or afraid to speak up when they witness what they know is wrong. We don’t want to be attacked or have drama. So we all kind of look the other way and keep letting them get away with it. They try to subconsciously justify it as being ok if they are of a protected class or can be portrayed as a victim class. They try to hide behind whatever label they claim instead of us all being fairly judged as law abiding Americans/citizens. As if justice should turn a blind eye to one but not the other based on whatever trending element can be claimed- be it color, age, gender, race, class, ability, ethnicity, size, sexual preference, proclivity, perceived privilege, wealth or lack there of, education level, etc, etc.
They now push the utterly unethical fallacy of equity over equality.

      * Morals, ethics and human decency, and justice overall is / should be blind to all of these things.
Wrong is wrong despite all else, especially in such a comparatively privileged, fortunate, opportunity filled, overwhelmingly helpful and giving country.

As both an employee and a consumer, I’ve felt the sting of the results & consequences of these awful people.
A couple of the more openly woke companies I’ve worked for have even punished us workers (by blatantly cutting hours, scheduling us in an obvi difficult to maintain way to force burn us out or scheduling us noticeably more infrequently to where it hurts or we don’t qualify for benefits) just for questioning shady returns, patterns or trying to prevent or point out blatant theft. It used to be just frustrating but is becoming very demoralizing.

I’ve discovered sadly that Reddit is a cesspool type dwelling for a lot of these mindsets to gather and share their collective beliefs that capitalism and businesses they designate deserve it. And don’t even think about trying to speak open mind would or question anything there in any of the beauty related forums. They bully, gang up and are just convinced of their social justice mindset that whoever they determine is bad or commits wrong thinking should be penalized. They refuse to look at bigger pictures and completely embody the “because we said so!” irrational victim mentality, virtue signaling mindset. It is sad. They are wholly programmed to overlook actual injustices if committed by someone who falls into whatever designated group, regardless of criminality or immorality. And if you dare question it, watch out!! Seemingly reasonable, educated people there are just absolutely brainwashed when it comes to any of the stuff that relates to society and morality.
It has become to where hatred for differing opinions have become stronger and more vitriolic than logic.
Muse said it right- stealing is stealing, -and I might add- regardless of if it’s a lipstick, foundation, a Gucci bag or some Nikes- ITS NOT RIGHT.
Thank you for being you, Mary and for having such rad self awareness and parlaying it into *actual* moral honor and justice.

      Thank you.

I appreciate ALL OF YOU for being amazingly blessed with the free will to embrace an inherently logical, decent and open mind, free to think clearly for yourselves, given all variables and perspectives, honestly and objectively, in the name of common sense for the common good for all.

  • Tippy6

Muse, once again, you are spot on! Never apologize for calling something out for what it is. If more people on this planet would start calling wrong out, this world would have a chance at becoming a better place. People see wrong, they hear wrong and they witness seriously wrong and say and do nothing. I’m really surprised that they can even stand upright because they don’t even have a spine. It’s especially disturbing when the wrong is being perpetrated against little people (children) or any vulnerable member of the human race. Additionally, never underestimate the beauty of the human mind to rationalize anything, even up to and including murder.

    • Isabella Muse

Tippy, you’re scary statement there is true, some people would absolutely come up with an excuse for murder 🙁 Sheesh…I like to think good of my fellow humans but sometimes they fail me!

  • Cindy M.

This angers me too, Muse, and it reminds me of something similar that I came across awhile back – it was a thread on Reddit I believe, where these girls were bragging about how they go into Ulta and shoplift! I won’t go into how they were doing it, but they were doing it in such a way that the stores never caught on. Needless to say I was shocked. That this was, and most likely still is, a thing! And that they were BRAGGING about it! So really, what you mentioned should come as no surprise. I was raised right and it angers me that these “women” have no conscience or morals. UGH.

    • Isabella Muse

wow…just wow….that’s crazy! I don’t even understand why anyone would brag about that 🙁

isabella, you are SO on point here. WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE THESE DAYS THAT THEY THINK STEALING AND RIPPING PEOPLE OFF IS OK??? i’ll take your moral ground and raise you a few:

my own personal mini-rant is about the legions of folks who think they’re clever by selling counterfeit, used or otherwise tainted items via the internet. i buy and sell on the internet for a living. i’m saddened (and yes, outraged) at some of my fellow resellers. they give us all a bad name.

sticking with the topic of makeup and personal care:
    * yup, there’s the old “fill-the-poured out-Dior-bottle-with-cheap stuff”, but the endgame here is to SELL it as real.
    * there are people re-selling bottles of lotions and every kind of potions, cleverly photographed so you can’t see they are half-empty – and no, that’s not disclosed to potential buyers.
    * there’s the “it’s brand new, unused, i only swatched it”, that upon arrival you see three shades on the palette are hitting pan.

my own personal favorite: the videos you
see of the “professional” dumpster-divers out behind sephora, ulta, etc, at 2am, stealthily wading through the trash seeking products the store trashed…SO THEY CAN SELL THEM ON THE INTERNET AS NEW! returns, out-of-date products, half-used samples…have you seen this? and yes, they laughingly video the whole thing, gloat about the money they’re going to make, and put it on the internet for others to enjoy, too. ha ha ha.

how is it that people think this is an ok thing to do, much less to glorify?

STEALING IS STEALING. Selling shit as new that you’ve hauled out of a dumpster, or that you/someone else has partially used and discarded IS STEALING. I’m not even going to start on re-selling fakes as authentic.

    So.Messed.Up.

great topic, isabella. thank you for the soapbox.

    your friend,
    jill still in florida

    • Isabella Muse

oh Jill you make a very valid point here! I’ve purchased bpal (perfume oils) off mercari and ebay and I’ve been burned several times where people pour in a filler oil mixed with a small portion of the original fragrance oil and try to pan it off as the real deal. VERY sad. VERY very sad! I’ve seen this a lot with dumpster divers as well! And it’s all kinds of gross to me 🙁 Thanks for stepping up to talk about it Jill!

I was in Nordstrom once at the Chanel counter, and my SA told me that earlier a woman had tried to return a lipstick that was almost completely used up, said it wasn’t working for her, and wanted another color. She demanded to speak to a manager when told no, and the supervisor told the SA to give her another lipstick, just keep the customer happy. UNBELIEVABLE nerve!!

    • Amelia

I have had this experience as a SA as well. We’d have the same usuals come in every few months, (specifically regarding lipsticks!) and do exactly the same, knowing our woke management would cave and succumb to their con rather than support us.
I know you keep saying, Muse, that you want to believe humans are innately good- I truly, sincerely feel you on that. I used to be that way.
But work in the public now, especially in retail, and you will have a depressing reality check and revelation with what I’ve seen going on.
Don’t get me wrong- they were doing this 15 years ago… but then it was an occasional random thing. Basically a one off- at least it felt. It has now, maybe thanks to social media and wokeness, become a daily thing. It is so disappointing.

I am so drained from being either pre-emptively berated by an aggressive unreasonable customer with attitude or that threatening even sometimes unspoken, dreaded feeling of someone causing a scene, it really takes the fun out of beauty.

You are absolutely right! They think they are screwing over a big corporation, but in the end the consumers and loyal customers of these businesses are the ones that end up paying the price (literally) when prices go up to compensate for these thefts, and like you said, stores have to change their return policies. We all lose when this happens, and if it happens too much, it can even drive some smaller companies out of business. Think of all the boutique brands that are hurt by this and do not have a huge company behind them. It cannot be said enough – stealing is stealing, and we need to be better than this!

    • Isabella Muse

exactly! It erodes profits and prices go up not to mention employees suffer as well!

  • Rachel

I am very glad that you posted about this — more people need to stand up for what is right. I live in Portland and this kind of attitude is prevalent here. Social media, mainstream media, and the lack of teaching our kids morals is what’s to blame in my opinion. We all struggle at times to make good decisions, but hopefully we will choose to make the right ones, even when no one else is looking. In our hearts, it just feels better to do right.

    • Isabella Muse

I agree totally we are not all great perfect moral people everyday of the week! Everyone struggles with the right choices in life but I do have hopes we can choose wisely at least 90% of the time. This is obvious stealing and to promote it and be pleased about it just feels wrong 🙁

  • Mel

Yeah I’m with other commentators here. I had no idea people did this! I’ve returned things to both Sephora and Ulta but they were products that I found were not working out early on and I was happy to give them back. Now I save money by reading your reviews 🙂

    • Isabella Muse

Awww thanks Mel! That’s really flattering to hear!

  • Linda Whitener

You couldn’t be more right about this, Muse! While I realize the markup on high-end cosmetics is ridiculous, stealing is not the answer; being an educated consumer is. I suspect it’s possible to find reasonably priced alternatives for the vast majority of high-end products. It’s kinda like audio equipment: at a certain price point, only your dog can tell the difference.

  • Rio

What if to cut costs, instead of that high end spendy foundation the company replaced it with a much cheaper one so that you weren’t getting what u paid for? That Tik Tokker would be outraged. That’s basically what they’re doing. There’s such an air of entitlement here that is seriously wrong. Guess you can’t blame prospective employers from searching far and wide on the web before they hire someone!
    Very thought provoking topic Muse!!
