Ulta Updates Website and Says Nothing to See Here Guys!

Ulta updated their website recently and just said, “Listen guys, nothing to see here! We just decided to plop a drop down menu right here and call it a day! The pandemic has us like, we need a refresh, but let’s not put TOO much work into because we’re tired! It’s been a year! Give us a break ok?”

It feels like I’ve been waiting for an Ulta website update and redesign for ages! Christine (Temptalia) once told me she hated the layout of the Ulta website. I don’t actually hate it. In some cases, I even sort of like it more than Sephora’s website. It’s pretty basic and simple yet it gets the job done.

Earlier this week or maybe it was late last week I noticed they updated the site.

A little.

Barely an update.

The category menu was completely visible on the left hand side of the screen prior to their little Spring clean up and now it’s available in a what web designers call a hamburger menu (those three little lines that allow you click to drop down a menu).

I really want to sit down and talk to them about this. What was the game plan for this? Why not update the whole site? Did we run out of petty cash funds for website design? Did someone wake up and say, let’s just put a little menu RIGHT here and it’ll make everything a little more amazing!

It’s one of the oddest and smallest redesigns in the history of the Internet. What in the world…! Using that drop down hasn’t increased the page size by any means. We still have the same size page retail space! It’s not bigger or wider. Nothing has changed….aside from the drop down menu.

Did you know on Tiktok everyone is convinced we live in a parallel universe because we never see our neighbors take in the groceries (truth!) and it’s never been JCPenny and it’s always been JCPenney…..well, what if the Ulta hamburger menu is further proof we are living in some Lost parallel universe. Nothing is real….!

I’m kidding. Please don’t feed the conspiracy theorists! I promise we aren’t living in a parallel universe! It’s just the mandela effect. I think……!

None the less, Ulta has some website changes and I need to know what you think of them or if you even noticed them.

Let me know in the comments!

About the Muse

Isabella MuseIsabella is just an average everyday geeky girl who doesn’t blend her eyeshadow correctly, wears too much blush, and hopes she never finds her holy grail products because she likes the thrill of the chase so much. Her mission is to bring you super honest reviews on makeup, skincare, fragrance and all things beauty. She’s in no way an expert on the topic and she sure as hell isn’t a super model. But she’s passionate about makeup and is seeking like-minded individuals that like pina coladas, getting caught in the rain, and ones that enjoy spending hundreds of dollars at Sephora without feeling buyer’s remorse. Yup. Reminds me of IT at my day job, a non-profit. If they ever fix what’s needed (and I have given up asking, as it leads to further fuck ups) my BP will drop precipitously from stroke region to dead. On my iPads I do get a quicker response from the drop down ‘new arrivals’ than from the older configuration. But it seems silly in view of what’s needed. 1 thing better about U than S: You click on a product to see it. Then click back to the main page.’ Ulta’s still insists on cranking back to the top of the page. Sephora OMBFG not only goes back to the top of the page, but also completely mixes up the order of products and usually moves your last viewed product to the top row, even if you thought they were dreckola. Sometimes even the pages change, as well as product order. Really a PIA on the sale pages. Plus deliberate duplicated entries. I thought Worst in Show was Barney’s, though.

It works fine on mobile but it makes the site look weird on desktop…what a weird update! OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG YES on Barneys! Barneys=HOT MESS!

Haven’t tried it on laptop yet. That should be fun(ny) depending on my mood. I almost never use either laptop or phone for sites, unless the sites on iPad are dysfunctional/not Apple friendly.

Someone online said once that maybe the world did end in 2012 and the last few years haven’t exactly disproved the theory.

Web designers drive me absolutely bonkers with their redesigns that make site navigation ever more opaque in the pursuit of a “clean” page. I must give credit where it’s due; Trader Joe’s redesigned their website and it’s clean, brand specific and easily navigable.

YES LOL that’s the theory! We’re all living in a Lost episode! I haven’t been a while now I gotta go look!

None of these compare to the shitshow that is the MAC website. It is almost unusable it’s so bad. Sephora drives me nuts with its rearranging of items after you click one one, but Mac is just unusable. I hate even going there, so I hardly ever do, even when there’s a sale. That tells you how bad it is!

    • Isabella Muse

LOL I KNOW! mac’s website is so bad…! Like really bad!

I’ve never been happy with online shopping from Ulta, and the shipping has always been slow for me. I love shopping in person at their stores when I’m feeling a bit glum-always makes me feel better. (Interestingly these stores have become HUGE with our local shoplifters-constantly stealing expensive products, which has to impact costs)
Anyway, their website always bugs me.

Thank you for your daily email! It really brightens my day!

    • Isabella Muse

Thankfully shipping is pretty good for me! Sometimes even faster than Sephora. YES! I’ve seen a lot about the shoplifting issues! Aw I’m glad 🙂

  • Chris

You had to make me visit the website, didn’t you? LOL
I’m on an IPad & the drop down showed pretty quickly. I tapped on Brands & it took a little longer to load. I see Ulta eliminated Dose of Colors which I thought had excellent eyeshadow palettes & eyeliner pencils.

LOL Chris! yeah a few months ago they had a lot of dose of colors on sale it disappeared soon after! Shame!

On the other end of the spectrum Nordstrom Rack has completely phased out Hautelook. And over the last couple of weeks, each day was a new update. This week the page looks exactly like the regular Nordstrom page. How’s that for an update?!?!
I fear we might see the Rack disappear completely from online.

    • Isabella Muse

I KNOW right? Now it’s just Rack only. It even redirects! I think Rack will stay because they often have hautelook-like private sales!
