A Tale of Writer’s Block

Sometimes ideas float around in my head and I have to write them down before they disappear just as quickly as they come to me.

Other times there’s nothing. A void that if you should yell into it you’ll hear an echo return.

With the delay in Fall and Holiday Collections and a case of writer’s block, I fear I haven’t been putting my best into Musings of a Muse lately and I’m really sorry about that. Lately, I feel a little overwhelmed. I’m so behind on approving comments and replying to them, so behind replying to comments and direct messages on Instagram, and forget emails and tweets.

My grammar and spelling are notoriously bad too. It happens because I’m typically doing at least five hundred things at one time and I hit that post button so hard before proofing myself.

I’m human. Welcome to my hot mess of a blog.

Please forgive me?

Writer’s block can hit from time to time but this is probably one of the worst times I’ve had with it. I feel very uninspired lately and I can’t pinpoint why that is. There are ideas floating around in my head but nothing in the beauty world has really captured me enough to write about it lately.

I’ve been thinking really hard about Musings of a Muse lately and one afternoon, several weeks ago, I was texting with Christine (Temptalia) and I said, maybe I should do more lifestyle posts. I mean, I’m doing them already, right? We chat slow cookers, avo toast, and a host of other things why can’t we do more of that? It’s not that makeup won’t be here! It’ll always be a major part of Musings of a Muse I am, forever, always, a complete beauty h0r but what if we did more of everything here. Remember this blog started with that catchphrase: “Musings of a Muse: Musings from a Cosmetic Whore”. It changed a few years ago because my dev team told me it wasn’t exactly politically correct to have whore and makeup in the same blog title. I keep asking myself to this day why I ever changed it when I loved it?

Cooking, travel, books, tech, gaming, it’s endless what we can discuss. Actually, we do already discuss most of that already!

Before the panoramic started I was an avid travel but what I posted about was limited to a few Instagram posts. What about all the times I’ve burned boiling water? Don’t you want to hear about that? Or my huge to be read pile of books and how I met Dena on “booktock” and she opened my eyes to an entirely new way of enjoying reviews on books.

We can do all those things, can’t we? I don’t want to take away your safe place. I think of Musings of a Muse as a place that everyone can come, joke, share anything and everything without the fear of judgment, and just enjoy themselves. I don’t personally like change which is why I’m asking if I change a little bit would it upset you or could you embrace it?

As I struggle with my writer’s block just know that inspiration will strike. It always does, From interesting Tiktok interactions, I have to wild and crazy food things I eat to that next great concealer I love I always have something to tell you.

This is my story and I like telling it to you. As I always say, time is precious, thank you for spending some of your precious time with me.

With all my love and respect.
Your muse.

About the Muse

Isabella MuseIsabella is just an average everyday geeky girl who doesn’t blend her eyeshadow correctly, wears too much blush, and hopes she never finds her holy grail products because she likes the thrill of the chase so much. Her mission is to bring you super honest reviews on makeup, skincare, fragrance and all things beauty. She’s in no way an expert on the topic and she sure as hell isn’t a super model. But she’s passionate about makeup and is seeking like-minded individuals that like pina coladas, getting caught in the rain, and ones that enjoy spending hundreds of dollars at Sephora without feeling buyer’s remorse. If you’re that person feel free to reach out and leave a comment or follow me on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Bloglovin‘.

Hey girl, you are only human! Its okay if you are behind on comments and other such things. I’m sure as heck it gets busy around here. I truly appreciate what you do and your posts, and I know coming up with content everyday can’t be an easy task. So you wanna include more lifestyle posts? I say GO FOR IT! I’d love those kind of posts from you. Not saying you need to change at all. YOU are perfect 😉 But change is not a bad thing, and I’m sure your lovely readers would embrace it. I know I would! <3

Never apologize. There is absolutely no need. These days its tougher than ever to be a public person. For every action or utterance, there are 1500 people standing in line waiting to tear you down to make themselves feel.in some way better. This is the age of Schadenfreude, and its so effin easy and anonymous on SM. Without any need to be responsible for what you did/said. Remember when you didnt think that your skin was too thin for this gig? Remember when you didnt feel the pressure, as if theres a target on your back? Things really were more tolerant BITD. Just a short bit BITD. I love the tangential stuff. You have a dozen plates in the air. The fact that you keep the blog up is remarkable. Youre highly creative and funny as hell. Those skills dont get lots of use when you own an insurance company, though your firefighting skills must. But if you quit concealers, frag reviews, memes, and positivity, Ill blow away like a deflated balloon. Thats kind of the right metaphor, because you are uplifting. dont screech and howl with laughter. I mean it, not in a creepy way. Continue to stand up for all you do. Especially for yourself.

  • Colleen

If you write about those other topics I will happily read them. And I love the cosmetics whore tag line. Because Im the same

  • Kathy

I understand! I’m sure I’d have A LOT of blank times if I were to attempt something like a blog. I say go for whatever is on your mind – tv, movies, books, music, travel, etc. I really value your frankness and I’ve grown to kinda sorta accept your grammar challenges 🙂 They make you – you!

    • Isabella Muse

Aw Kathy thanks girl! and sorry the grammar is an issue since many of the posts are coming at a time I’m multitasking or I just woke up and I’m a zombie 😀

  • Kuz

I think you should talk about whatever you wish on Musings of a Muse! It’s your blog – and we’re all here to read about what you have to say. 🙂 Some of us have been with you for years (since 2007!) and some of us might be new fans, but the common denominator is always you and your wonderful posts. I keep coming back day after day, year after year because your site cheers me up and never fails to put a smile on my face. Thank you for that! And for the record, I fully support you taking as long as you need for the writer’s block to clear; we’ll be here waiting for you when inspirations hits. We always are!

    • Isabella Muse

OH MY GOD TEARSSSSSSSSS! I love you 2007ers! 🙂 Kuz, thank you! That means so much to me. I love all of you!

  • Kimmwc03

Lifestyle posts are fine by me as long as beauty doesn’t go away completely.

  • Mandy

Coming from a fellow “cosmetic whore”…I completely understand. The pandemic has changed me (for better or for worse) and cosmetics are less important than they were pre-pandemic. I personally love that you want to add more lifestyle pieces. I originally came to your blog for the makeup advice…but I stayed because I like your writing and sense of humor. I have only recently started leaving comments, but I have been reading your website for a long time. I have just started downsizing my cosmetic collection and realizing I own way too much (do not tell my husband that I am confessing this:). So if my vote counts….write whatever you want and I will still love reading it.

    • Isabella Muse

Thanks Mandy thanks so much that means a lot to me! haha your husband will be most pleased though when he discovers you’re downsizing ;-D And I appreciate any and all comments you’ve been making thanks so much!

  • Jane E Karr

Nothing to forgive, dear, sweet beautiful lady! I look forward to your writings every single day! I feel we are kindred spirits even though I am old enough to be your mother. Love you!

  • Emily Fussell

One day recently after reading your posts, I thought to myself how does she always have something interesting, upbeat & informative to write about. I was thinking no way would I be able to do it. Some days I don’t even want to talk much less write a blog. Go easy on yourself.

    • Isabella Muse

thanks Emily that’s SUPER flattering to hear 🙂 I find inspiration everywhere in everything in everyone I meet. A chat with someone, a youTube video I watched, another creator, everyone and everything is my inspiration ;-D but sometimes it doesn’t always flow as quickly as I’d like it to! Thanks Emily I’ll try! But I’m one that likes to go go go and push harder harder harder 😀

  • Dee

I would have never guessed that you are struggling with writer’s block because there is always something interesting and fun to read here! You have a life outside of this blog and shouldn’t apologize for living it and not replying to comments, etc. Just do what you can handle!

It does feel strange that makeup isn’t rolling out for fall and the holidays, doesn’t it? I don’t mind the lack of holiday items but I do wish fall things would magically appear.

The pandemic has changed all of us in so many ways. Some of life before of it hit I really miss and some of it I’m glad is gone. Just post when you feel like it and we will continue to enjoy it! But you shouldn’t feel pressured or obligated to do so. You need to take care of yourself and not worry about us, Muse! xoxox

    • Isabella Muse

Well thanks Dee 🙂 maybe I’m doing something right! Life is at such a standstill lately you’d think I’d be better about replies but it only seems to get more overwhelming! but I try! ;-D Indeed, things are very slow rolling out this year likely due to imports, factory shutdowns, less workers, etc…! I ALWAYS worry about you guys and I never feel obligated to post! I find pounding an idea out very soothing ;D

  • Denise

    Hey girl,
I’m sure you’re familiar of Makeup Alley. They used to be hopping. New owners or whoever changed it ruined it. I remember days when 5000 members would be on. They let trolls come back, stopped the swapping, secret Santa, and basically everything that was fun.
I wouldnt mind the change as long as only one name per member (no mutiple names) b/c the trolls would get deleted, wait a day set up a new hotmail account have a different name and start their trolling.making fun of people/ rascist/body shaming & political arguments. As long as its makeup books food or whatever I will stick around here. xo

    • Isabella Muse

Hey! Of course! and I still visit on occasion! Things won’t change in a way that it will be too noticeable 🙂 Please remember this is still a safe place and one about makeup 98% of the time 😀

      • Denise

I’m a 2007’er also. I just never post . Still love your IG post with you making your eyebrows move – you are too cute!

        • Isabella Muse

Denise, come out and say hi every once and a while! I love that you’re with this long 🙂 thank you! It’s freaking flattering as hell! LOL oh my god. The girls I met on Tiktok are always dragging me into these weird trains and duets they do! I look like a dork ;D but thanks!

  • Marti Bentley

Keep writing on whatever you feel like, you have a lot of pizzazz and spunk and your writing is hilarious. You are evolving to more than just a makeup review and that is a really good thing. Staying the same just gets boring and stale.

  • Peggy

Hire a virtual assistant. How about just hiring some help with editing posts, posting sales, and correspondence. As you have shared, you have a full-time job along with this blog. One of the things I enjoy most is your reviews. Maybe even post less often yourself, but when you do, it be something you truly want to share with us. Best thoughts as you work through this.

    • Isabella Muse

I have actually interviewed two people for that but it didn’t work out. It’s def something I’d like to explore further 😀 I have a problem with “post less often” because I have too many things I want to pound out and get shared 😀

  • Susan

I’ve been reading you for many years and have noticed you moving away from makeup reviews and into other topics. That’s perfectly fine! “Musings” are just that, musings! You’re a good writer and I like reading whatever you post.

But maybe, if you’re not all that interested in reviewing makeup, start a new blog? Personally, I’m usually (not always) not interested in reading about sales because I get sales alerts from the companies and stores I like, and if it’s companies I don’t like then I don’t care about their sales, either. All the sales notices kinda seem like filler now, and I totally get it because when I had a blog years & years ago, sales were an easy, low-effort post on days when I didn’t feel like writing anything else. But I also realized that I no longer had much to say about my blog’s original purpose, and as they say — when you get to the end, stop. So I did.

We all grow and change. No reason we should sound like we did 10 years ago. Write what you want and what you enjoy talking about. Maybe separate blogs, one for pop culture etc. and one for makeup? The makeup one could be a total revamp — switch up the brands you usually talk about, change your usual photo pose, have a retro/vintage post once a week, whatever. As I say, I’m reading and will keep on doing so! Take care.

    • Isabella Muse

Thanks so much Susan. I’d like to keep the content here versus doing two blogs as I’m already overwhelmed and maintaining two different spaces feels like a lot of work! I do post sales because they help me pay the server bill here. Maintaining the blog not counting items purchased for review or any other expenses like backup services, support, etc…is quite costly. The server bill along is $$$$$ and again, that’s not with all the other expenses. So, yeah, running a blog like this can be costly. I don’t want to stop 🙂 I like doing it so stopping isn’t really an option for me 🙂 But we’ll see how this lifestyle thing evolves perhaps! Hopefully it isn’t too intrusive or weird to your normal experience here!

      • Susan

Gotcha! I didn’t know that about the costs, server bill, and so on. My blogging experience was much simpler and cheaper so duh, me. 🙂

        • Isabella Muse

No no no not duh! It’s ok! It’s just a blog of this size costs $$ to run.

I wrote about your blog/email updates in my gratitude journal at the start of 2016 (I just checked the date in it), writing how grateful I was for all the new makeup and skincare products that I kept discovering because of you and some of which I was able to find on a trip to New York in January 2016! I wouldn’t have known about them if it wasn’t for you; I went there with my sister and told her how I absolutely had to visit a Bath and Body Works shop (my sister had never heard of it as we don’t have it here in the UK) which I only knew about because of you, so we found one and came out each with a bag full of products! I know I’d been getting the email updates for a few years before that too but I don’t know when exactly I signed up, sorry! I think you writing about other subjects is a fab idea as I love your writing style (very sweet and fun!) and it would work so well as a ‘lifestyle blog’ as well as beauty 😀 Thank you for all the rec’s over the years! And thank you for being you <3

P.S. I know exactly what you mean about writer's block, that's why I don't post much on social media generally, haha!

  • Christina

It’s your blog, Muse! Write whatever you feel like. It’s always nice to have a variety of topics to talk about and bounce ideas around. I don’t think it’s realistic to write only about beauty; isn’t that why YouTubers have their great ready with me chats and vlogs. Same thing, different medium. I’d be interested in books (and dramas). LOL! What are you reading lately?

  • honoluluhabibi

my friend- we are navigating a-friggin global pandemic, survived the regime of 45, are witness to tragedies in afghanistan + lebanon, unrest + earthquakes in haiti, genocides in ethiopia, myanmar, + palestine, wild fires in greece, algeria, turkey, california, and beyond, the unearthing of native children in canada burden in the back yard of schools, the challenging + necessary discussions of systemic racism… along with grief, loss + changes to anything that was before 2019.

of course there’s blockage- for all.
the unrealistic to be a brand, create content + monetize in another greatly unhealthy by produce of the 1st world + social media.

i’m grateful for whatever you want to share, on your schedule

be kind to yourself, and others??

    • Isabella Muse

tell me about it my dear. I had the time of it during COVID! I just couldn’t form a sentence especially when BLM came about plus the unrest in the entire country. It’s just been some hell of a crazy trip. Thank you so much for your support! You as well! 🙂

  • Catherine

Thank you for sharing this post, it may not have been the easiest post to write. I am sorry to hear that you are struggling and that you are focused on trying to figure out how make your readers happy. I very rarely give advice (and even rarer still do I take advice lol), but I want to share a bit of wisdom that I have learned in my many years. First and foremost, always be true to yourself. This is true in life and in this specific case, your blog. We, your readers, are along for the ride, wherever you decide that ride should take us. Please post anything that makes your heart happy or anything that feels like a weight that needs to be unburdened. If it means something to you, I guarantee it will mean something to your readers. It may not resonate with everyone and that is okay, maybe the next one will. I spent too many years trying to appease others and making nobody happy in the process. I look forward to the new path your blog takes. Thank you for being you!

    • Isabella Muse

Thank you so much Catherine that means a lot to me! You have no idea how much it means to me. I do want this to be a safe space for everyone to enjoy and I value all your opinions that’s why I asked 🙂 But you are very right! Sometimes we need to make ourselves happy before we worry about appeasing others 🙂

  • Laurie

I keep coming back for the good vibes! I enjoy whatever topic your writing about : )

  • Laura

Bath and body works brought me here, but I dont buy it anymore. Since the pandemic, I dont wear makeup at all. I look at every post, but its the nonmakeup ones I actually read. You do you, I will still keep following you because its you that keeps me coming back.

  • Lexi

Late but my two cents is to do you- Ive been reading your blog for years now. I came for the makeup but stayed because I appreciate your writing, interests and personality. I enjoy the fun posts, the lifestyle ones, humorous ones, all of it. And as far as sales, I dont usually follow them but then youve saved me money on perfume so… I say keep it all, Ill still gladly come!
