Here’s 3 Things I Hate About Myself And How I Make Them Better

This may sound vain but I work hard. I never take on anything unless I’m putting 500% into it and pumping the volume up to 10. Work, hobbies, life, friends, family, whatever it is I always give it my all.

This is one thing I can confidently say I like about myself. But for every one thing I like about myself, there are two million other things I hate. My list of self-hate is huge.

Here are 3 things I hate about myself and here’s how I make them better.

1. Big, buggy, Bambi eyes
I hate my eyes. They make me look like a chibi. It’s not a terrible thing to look like a chibi and most days I embrace it but there are some days I just wanna look sexy and grown-up and my eyes simply don’t really do me any favors when it comes to wanting to look a certain way! I swear my national anthem is “Brown Eyed Girl” because listening to Van Morrison sing about a brown-eyed girl makes things seem right with the world again! There are a few ways I try to play up my eyes to look more adult-like!

Shu Uemura Lash Curler
Shu’s eyelash curler is still the Cadillac of all eyelash curlers! I don’t care what anyone says I still love it best and it’s served me well for well over 15 years. Curling and applying a few layers of Tarte Lights Camera Lashes give my eyes that extra POW to make them look sultry instead of childlike.

Taupe and Charcoals Instead of Black Eyeshadow
I’m getting to a point in my life where black eyeshadow just makes me look haggard. Believe me when I say that having big eyes that look exhausted is not the look I want to go for. I skip black eyeshadow and traditional smoky looks lately and just head right in for the taupes or charcoals. Both shades are a lot more forgivable and don’t give me that punched-in-the-eye look! My favorite is Pat Mcgrath’s Eyedols Eyeshadow in Divine Minx ($12.50). It’s that perfect smoky charcoal with a metallic finish that produces a smokier look without accenting my dark circles or finer lines.

2. Long, wavy, curly, frizzy, hair
There are days I seriously go through my life thinking, “Today is the day I’m going to shave my entire head!” My hair is long, it’s wavy, it’s curly, it has a life completely separate from my own. My boyfriend LOVES it long and I think that’s why I never cut it because I love that he loves it but I just don’t love it! Does that make sense? It sounds like it did when I typed it! But there are days it behaves itself and those are glorious days!

Beat the Frizz
To beat the frizz and stop shedding like a cat I use Kristin Ess Frizz Management Cleansing Co-Wash. This stuff is magical. Since I started using it I swear I lose less hair and my hair always looks so much slicker and smoother. I also use Flora & Curl Defining Gel and it’s like magic for smoothing and de-frizzing! Actually, a lot of Flora & Curl really does wonders for my hair! They have a Mini Essentials Set and I highly recommend trying it if you have curly, frizzy hair!

3. I’m Height Challenged
Not much you can do when you’re a short girl! At some point in your life, you just have to embrace it. At 5 Feet tall I can’t reach high shelves, leggings and pants are always too long, and I’m always looking up at people versus down. Being a short girl living in a tall world can be hard work but I make do the best I can. If you feel less than confident about your height do try adding a few inches with some cute but comfortable heels. I’m still stuck in the 90s because for me Mary Janes are totally my go-to for adding height and giving me a hell of a lot more confidence about being a bit taller. I like them because they are not only very comfortable due to the chunkier heel but also because they’re cute. So, if you’re short I say wear the most comfortable heels you own and embrace being a little taller for the day!

You’re never going to be as perfect as you want to be. But you are as perfect as the universe intended you to be!

Remind yourself today that you’re beautiful and smart and funny!

I think you’re pretty damn awesome.

Let me know how you change the things you dislike about yourself so you feel more confident!

About the Muse

Isabella MuseIsabella is just an average everyday geeky girl who doesn’t blend her eyeshadow correctly, wears too much blush, and hopes she never finds her holy grail products because she likes the thrill of the chase so much. Her mission is to bring you super honest reviews on makeup, skincare, fragrance and all things beauty. She’s in no way an expert on the topic and she sure as hell isn’t a super model. Love this post… Can relate although I am way older and dealing way longer… My hair is very coarse and on a rainy day feels like a brillo pad… Thanks to Uncle Sam I tried a buzz cut and now 30 years later I’ve never looked back.. My eyes are hooded so eye shadow is always a work in progress.. And yes I’m vertically challenged.. Thank you…

    • Isabella Muse

haha Maureen you made my day because sounds like we suffer from the same three issues. My eyes lately are sunken in a bit so dark eyeshadow always seems like a bad idea and I’ve always wanted to just shave off all my hair and get a pixie cut or something but I’m not so brave! I admire you did it and never went back ;-D One day we’ll finally found that mushroom that makes us taller!

  • Cindy

I can TOTALLY relate hair wise, I’m going to have to give that shampoo a try! My hair was almost touching my butt and I said “ENOUGH” and shaved my head 😉 Its growing back now, but I know at some point in my life I’ll be going back to a shaved head because it just felt right. But its a constant battle with frizz and keeping my curls looking nice.

P.S. I LOVE your eyes. They’re big and bright and beautiful!

    • Isabella Muse

I REMEMBER THAT DAY! I admired you SO DAMN MUCH for it and you looked so beautiful (you still do just sayin’ after you shaved it I was like damn that’s not brave but she also looks freaking awesome too). There are days I really want to do it but I think I’d break my boyfriend’s heart if I did it LMAO! Same here! Frizz is a daily pain in the butt to deal with. TRY it! It’s awesome stuff 🙂 Aw Cin! Thank you! Your eyes are brilliant too 😀

      • Cindy

Don’t wanna break the boyfriends heart! My hubs also likes me with long hair. *sigh* The things we do for our loved ones 😉

I went from longish to Joan of Arc. BITD it looked good. Now, Id look like a survivor. Last h/c it went curly. Im wash & wear straight in summer. Decided Im too old to GAS. Itll be straight again when it becomes dryer season. I envy you people with significant hair. All I have to watch out for is fragrance in shampoo, as it can result in facial skin that looks like a chem burn.

Isnt it funny how the things we hate about ourselves are so often what other people love? Im so jealous of your big eyes with so much lid space! And your hair is glorious! Ill gladly trade you for my wild, frizzy, porous 3b Greek mop I guess the grass is always greener!

    • Isabella Muse

it really odd Can’t we just be happy with what we have? I don’t see any of what you see in me I hate all those things about me and wish I could change them Oh my gosh you so don’t have a mop of hair! Stop! I bet it’s gorgeous 🙂 And yeah, the grass is indeed always greener Silly girls are we!

Listen. Being short is good when youre old. Tall people often have difficulty with aging vision, inability to tolerate bifocals. The depth perception gets trashed and you have to hold the railing, bec youre afraid you might fall downstairs. Every guy I know over 6 and over 60 has that problem. I like short and feel slightly uncomfortable with tall people. The prob with short comes when you have to shop in the petite extra stout Dept! Love that Pat, but think I have dupes. Deep set eyes work against all black shadows. Even black based duochromes. I think this is a pretty common issue. So why TF is there a black pan in a 4 pan mini? Everyone has enough black shadow and Zero/Perversion pencils to color their state. Why so much? Sorry youre missing Con. Glad I didnt get tickets to Crimecon London. If all we have to b1tch about is appearance related, were damn lucky.

I usually remind myself of my blessings and am grateful for what I have to keep myself from dwelling on the negative. For example you have healthy eyes to see from instead of blindness, full hair instead of alopecia, and strong legs to walk with instead of needing a wheelchair.

    • Isabella Muse

I def remind myself daily of the things I’m thankful for 🙂 This was just a fun post about how I help myself feel more confident about things I’m less than confident about!

I love short people! My mom is short and so is my best friend. I love having the height ( and freakishly long arms) to help them. They are my fun sized folk or, my compact humans.

  • Lynne

I believe you must mean “Brown Eyed Girl” by Van Morrison? I think you’re positively beautiful

    • Isabella Muse

I’m so sorry! I was listening to Jim as I typed this ;-D and yes Van! aw gosh no, you’re way too kind Lynne thank you!

I am tall, 5′ 10″, even at 68 years but my hubby is 6’4″ so we are a perfect fit. I have loved being tall all my life except for trying to find long enough pants and the fact that I can not wear one piece anything because they never fit in the body area. However, I adore Mary Jane’s with any heel height. My favorite shoe from childhood to whatever the age I am at is called.

I would die to have your curly, long hair. Period. I have short, permed, curly hair. I don’t suffer too much with frizz but I am always on the lookout for something that will keep my hair in ringlets without the plastic feel. Still looking for the magic elixir.

My eyes are green but have a crepey lid and hooding. I use my favorite Chanel eyeshadows just on my lid with a very light touch of matte grey in the “crease”. It seems to work.

Happy Tuesday and have a wonderful, safe, love filled day!

    • Isabella Muse

I am so jealous! I’d love to be that tall! I would seriously love it so much! sigh! I’m short and fluffy sadly. Thank you! I hear ya on the magic elixir! Does it exist? 😀 Happy Tuesday Jane thank you for sharing that! I loved reading it!

    • Isabella Muse

omg no thank you though Eilern! You’re making my day over here!

  • Harshleen

I also have hair just like you and I am only 5 feet tall so I can totally relate to this post!

  • Jan Kelley

I have large round eyes. Theyll never be almond shaped no matter how shadow is applied. So, I now listen to my husband when he says he loves my eyes. I have a lot of hair, fine baby hair that tangles when you just look at it. Its barely wavy and tends to go flat. I too think of shaving my head but I dont want to find out what my skull looks like. I used to lie about my height. I would tell people Im 54. Im actually 5! I found if you say it with enough conviction you dont get challenged. Well, I now accept my height. I can buy jeans, shirts, sweatshirts and pullover sweaters in the boys dept. and in the preteens dept. Its much cheaper. And, to be forthright, Im content with being ?petite.??

  • Amanda

I think you’re so awesome and Hate is a strong word. Dislike is nicer. Lol
I do have a question for you.
How often do you use the cleansing co- wash? My hair gets frizzy and I shed like a cat and I hate it. So I am willing to try this.
Also, I’m 5’5 and jeans are long on me too.

    • Isabella Muse

Amanda, you’re the AWESOME one thank you! You’re right! Hate is a horrible word! I shouldn’t have put it like that. Thank you for correcting me because I always try to shake myself out of the habit of saying hate. I actually use it often! I’d say three to four times a week! I LOVE it. I swear I don’t lose any hair anymore in the shower after using it. Let me know how you do! I totally relate to too long jeans!
