So, Are We Waiting for the Dirt To Pile Up Or Are We Showering Everyday?

The “No Need to Shower Movement” is on like Donkey Kong. We got all these celebs telling us we may be washing ourselves too often and it’s probably unnecessary to actually shower every single day. Their recommendation? Just wait until the dirt piles up!

Yeah….but no….

More and more I find bathing to be less necessary, at times, Jake Gyllenhaal, 40, revealed to Vanity Fair on Thursday, August 5. I do also think that theres a whole world of not bathing that is also really helpful for skin maintenance, and we naturally clean ourselves.

Yeah, I’m gonna go ahead and respectfully disagree here.

I’m not really waiting for the dirt to pile up nor am I waiting until I start to smell before showering. Showering is part of my daily day. You can argue with me that I’m doing some major harm to my immune system or my skin but I’m probably not going to stop showering daily. Hell, sometimes I take a shower in the morning and one at night. GASP! Who even do I think I am for wanting to be THAT clean!? The nerve.

As always Mila Kunis just keeps it real here I wash my armpits and my crotch daily, and nothing else ever, the Black Swan star detailed. I got a bar of Lever 2000 that delivers every time. Nothing else. I do have a tendency to throw some water on my face after a workout to get all the salts out.

In all reality, I am all about personal hygiene. I like to smell pretty, I like my hair tucked up into a neat and tidy bun when I’m working, I make sure I floss and brush my teeth after meals, and I shower daily. I think showering isn’t only about getting cleaning but sort of my mechanism for waking up in the morning! I realize that’s not what everyone does though and hey, no judgement but I do question whether you need to wait for the dirt to pile up before hopping in the shower. I honestly couldn’t come back from a work out, splash water on my face, put my clothes on and head out. It would squeak me out. But that’s me! I realize other people do things much different than I do them!

What do you think?

Wait for the dirt or shower daily?

To shower or not to shower that’s the question!

Its a shifting target for me. I shower every other day unless I need to shower.

Its summer. If Im outside getting sweaty, or if Ive worked in the garden and worn DEET, I am taking a silkwood shower with soap and a washcloth. If I havent, I just take a normal shower (soap where it matters!). If I worked out Id soapy shower, too.

In winter when Im not doing much I just use soap where it matters. I lotion up immediately after the shower when Im still damp, but I live in Minnesota. Our winter air is incredibly dry and so is my skin, and we our skin biome doesnt need to be washed away all the damn time. Jake Gyllenhall sounds like hes gone a bit far, but honestly I feel like this issue has been used (and Im talking about on twitter) to shame people. I dont stink – I promise. I wash my sheets once a week, I wash my clothes regularly. These people on twitter who were bragging about showering two or three times a day, scrubbing at their skin constantly with washcloths – YOU GUYS. The earth needs the water and your skin needs its own oils!

    • Isabella Muse

Oh I agree that showering daily can really do some damage to your skin! I don’t think showering daily results in stench so yeah, that could be seen as bullying and shaming! I personally do it daily as a way to wake up in the AM! i’m not a morning person and I’m at stupid o’clock daily so I really need some water in my face to get myself going. I also just feel better after a shower. But like you said, when you’re outside and sweaty or even after a workout I think a shower is def needed. Jake and a few other celebs took it into a weird zone for me. Along the lines of just wait until you look dirty than shower….! Yeah that might be a bit long to wait imho! But hey, to each his and her own I guess!

      • Jane

Im not trying to convince you to change your schedule or anything, but I discovered that washing my face in ice cold water in the am really helped me. Of course in the coldest days of the year its almost unpleasant, but I figure my great grandmother didnt get running water until she was in her 70s so I can tolerate a little splash on my face!

        • Isabella Muse

I actually do cold! Warm dries me out 🙂 I try to do lukewarm to cool in my shower too! Hot water is too damn drying imho!

  • dia

For me, I shower when I come home. I take public transportation everywhere, and it’s gross, so I feel like I need to shower afterwards so I won’t contaminate my house. If I don’t leave the house for days like during the height of the pandemic last year, I can do a shower every two days unless I’m on my period, in which case it’s once a day. I also wash my hair every time I shower, because I have thin, straight hair that gets oily easily.

    • Isabella Muse

Ugh I can totally understand the need for a shower after a subway ride! It can be very gross! I’m positive they’ll throw me out of the hair club if I admit it but I do wash my hair daily. I tend to using a cleansing conditioner and a full shampoo and mask once a week! I imagine I’m stripping my hair like a bitch by doing so but I simply can’t take a shower without washing my hair!

  • kimkats

I don’t shower *every* day, but at least every other day. Sometimes if I’m not all sweaty I skip a day, but I clean the pits and ladybits every day. In summer, yeah, it’s an everyday thing. No skipping here – I stink otherwise and I’m dirty. Celebs are just weird about some shit, and this is one of their weirdnesses. (is that even a word?)

Any way, if I even *feel* unclean, into the shower I go!! Don ‘t care what Jake think!!

    • Isabella Muse

Truth on the weird celebs stuff! Maybe we’ll see it on Goop soon! “Don’t shower, dirt makes you stronger and healthier” LOL!

  • Jess

I shower every day (save for the occasional lazy sunday.)
I will never stop doing this so long as I am able.
Famous people can take a long walk off a short pier.
    😀

    • Isabella Muse

same here. I just feel better and cleaner when I do! I realize it’s not for everyone but that’s just me ;-D But these celebs saying wait for the dirt are making me very anxious lol!

    • dia

I think it was Anderson Cooper who said he never washes his expensive designer jeans because he doesn’t want them to fade. He feels putting them in the freezer will kill all the germs. First, it might kill the germs, but it won’t do anything about the sweat and dead skin cells. Second, eww what about all the food in his freezer. Maybe he has a special freezer for clothes ???

      • Jane

Meanwhile I wish I could figure out a way to get my dumb jeans to fade – for a while there it felt like jeans were only available in dark blue and I am so not a fan of the navy blue pigment transferring all over the couch, if I bump into a wall by mistake

  • Christina

I shower everyday. I workout, I have long hair, and I live in a sunny, hot climate. I do try to be as mindful of water consumption as possible, so I try to take the quickest shower I can, or if I have to let conditioner sit on my hair or I have to shave, I’ll turn off the water until I need it again.

I think with the massive drought that we’re experiencing in the West, a lot of us are trying to cut down on water consumption where we can. I don’t know about the celeb trend, but maybe that’s where they’re coming from? I don’t follow celebs, so this is just my guess.

    • Isabella Muse

I workout everyday as well and I really can’t see myself going to work without showering. It just squeaks me out! I do the same as far as shutting the water off when I shave or if I have a hair mask in etc…! Thankfully we don’t have any drought issues in NY at the moment but the West needs as much water as you can get. I think they are saying too much showering can weaken your immune system or something as in play in the dirt it’ll make you more immune to disease!? Who knows with celebs!

      • Christina

Eh, my immunity is fine. I hardly get sick, and I’ve been showering everyday since I was a kid. LOL! It’s not like I like my arms and hands like I did when I was a kid, exposing myself to all sorts of germs and building up my immunity. LOL!

  • StellaDiva

I feel as if I dont sweat properly if I dont shower. But there is a difference between a full blown shower and a quick rinse. So I will shower before a workout and a rinse afterwards.

    • Isabella Muse

I def can’t workout and just splash water on myself to be honest. I tend to shower after a work out.

  • AthenaJ

I do a full “normal” shower of lathering and scrubbing my whole body down (neck to toes) with a loofa and then a washcloth for the ladybits, 1 to 2x a day depending if I worked out or not. Facial cleansing is a separate process. In the summer I may do two showers, even without a workout, if it was a particular sweaty and humid day.

    • Isabella Muse

facial cleansing for me is totally a separate process too! I spend way too much time cleansing my face lol!

  • kjh

Just remembering studying in Germany in the 70s. Living in homes w/families. We compared notes and found that all of us followed their house rules: Uh, shower or bathe once a week, when you can wash your hair. Being way oily, with long hair parted in the middle, I looked like a Woodstock survivor, yeesh. No photos, please, oy. I was a daily shower person until my ? Autoimmune situation disabled sweating for ~ 2 1/2 years, dried me out. Plus, I need to do baths. Then sluice afterwards. And, yeah, the public.get home and do it right away, either, depending on time. One of the big controversies for those who shower daily: wash your legs? Most women I know shave, so exfoliation and cleaning product anyway. Do I GAS for what celebs and influencers do? Hardly.

  • Carolina

I live in Houston so I shower everyday. Sometimes I even shower twice a day because it can get that hot here. Occasionally I have had to skip showers due to say hurricanes, or the extreme snow/freeze we got this past February, but outside of those wacky weather disasters, a daily shower is part of my routine and I have to admit I look forward to it.

    • Isabella Muse

New York here and the humid hot Summers def call for a shower! Also, like you, showering is just something I do daily as part of my routine!

    • Anne

Ive lived my whole life in different parts of Texas and let me agree that Houston is a special kind of hot. Two showers a day is not unreasonable! Did a lot of laundry there too, whew.
(I also didnt shower during the snowpocalypse lol)
Anyway do we really believe these celebs (who obviously work out) dont bathe? I think they just want to trend.

  • Linda

Please celebrities stop telling us! Omg. 884 million people in the world lack access to safe water. Not bathing is not cool, woke, or trendy. Its smelly. And these stink loving celebrities are privileged. Jake can do what he wants bathing wise, but he doesnt need to be telling the rest of us. I laughed so hard at Reductress on Instagram- Brave: another white person comes out as stinky.

    • Isabella Muse

oh my god…that’s funny with Reductress. Honestly, to each his or her own but lord, I could never go without my daily shower!

      • Linda

Dwayne Johnson, Jason Momoa, and Chris Evans all went on record as bathers. The Rock hits the shower 3 times a day.

        • Isabella Muse

I SAW the one about Dwayne, whom I love, now I gotta go google the rest.

  • Catherine

I shower every day no matter what! I just dont feel good, physically and mentally, unless I have showered. It is my time to just completely relax for a few minutes (water consumption is always taken into consideration) without the outside world interrupting. I dont understand how celebrities function with their lack of bathing, but live and let live! And I so agree with you,I love smelling pretty and having my shower smell nice while bathing, it is calming and centering.

    • Isabella Muse

same here! It wakes me up and makes me ready for the day! And yes, both physically and mentally it does something for me! So yeah, showering is a must for me! That was beautifully put because I feel exactly the same way about being neat, clean, and tidy! Even in my home life! I like things organized and super clean in our home! It makes me feel very calm if everything is neat!

  • Cindy

Ugh. Celebs putting shit out there like that is gross. Showering every day for me is a must, period.

    • Isabella Muse

I mean, to each his/her own! No judgement! But I am of the mentality that showering everyday is a good idea!

  • Shelly

Hell to the know. Menopause sweat is real day and night. I shower 2x a day Never miss my 2 a day

  • Dee

In the winter it’s every other day and in the summer it depends on if I’m working outside, etc. Sometimes it’s necessary to shower daily and sometimes I can still do every other. I’m like you in that I could never work out and then just put my regular clothes back on and go about my day. Same with working in the garden for hours if it’s really hot outside. I’m too anal to wait til the dirt piles up!

  • Cynthia

Its hot and humid in SWVA, I am allergic to everything, I walk my little chug a mile most days, and I sweattwice a day showerer here. AM to wake up, PM to wash off the allergens and sweat so I sleep well (mostly a rinse). Works for meIll find something else to be weird about if I become a celebrity someday!

  • Hollybell41

I love in Florida so for me its every day. And like you, sometimes twice a day. I think the soap you choose makes a difference but my skin is good. By the end of a day I have a pretty good layer of sebum on my face. I hate to sound judgey but Im not sure I could be with someone who didnt shower daily!

    • Isabella Muse

In Florida weather I’d prob be showering ten times daily. You guys got that CRAZY weather going on! I know! Same here! I mean, to each his/her own but it does squeak me out!

      • Claudia

No snark received, Allure has/had a video on their site. When you wash your hair(especially if it is oily) you actually use the tips of your fingers and massage the shampoo into your scalp. Condition if you wish. Wash behind your ears, they do smell. Work your way from top to bottom. Wash your bum and it’s crack and rinse your lady parts throughly(gyno said not to use soap there). Feet are last and between the toes.

  • Sakura

I take one daily and often 2 daily. I get overheated at night and exercise use during the day. I feel hot easily. I love the clean soap smell and clean hair. My hair is fine and gets dirty easily. I try to conserve water though when showering.

    • Isabella Muse

I work out once in the AM and hop on the Peloton when I get in from work so if that’s what my work out day is looking like I typically do one in the AM and once at night as well!

  • Kelly

These people are NASTY!! Shower DAILY before getting into bed. Wash all the sweat and gross of before tucking into clean sheets!!

  • Claudia

I live in Dallas. It was 98 yesterday. On those super hot and sweaty days I rinse off in the evening or soap up but without scrubbing but I shower every morning. I also have KP and even glycolic acid can’t make it go away so I scrub lightly. What amuses me are the people that think they don’t smell; just because one cannot smell oneself does not mean that others can’t smell you. I have also known people that shower daily though not correctly and they still smell, like human sebum . Jake Gyllenhaal looks dirty anyway so I am not surprised.

    • Isabella Muse

LOL oh my gosh I laughed at Jake looks dirty anyway. EEP! I feel bad now haha!

    • Donna Jensen

This is so totally not a sarcastic or bait question but I am sincerely wondering now what is the ‘correct’ way to shower? I don’t think there is any way for me to phrase that question without it sounding snarky. I am just paranoid now that I am one of those people who smell and don’t know it. The existential dread of this!!!!!!!!

      • Claudia

Pheww, I am doing it mostly correctly but will do better in the future washing between my toes, I always just assumed the soap and water ran down there enough. Ears – that’s a good point. Not to be too gross but the smell behind the ears, as you age, is one of the sources of the odors that people perceive as “old.” I have a special Japanese persimmon soap that allegedly targets this. As a perfume/scent freak, I have always been terrified of smelling off, as I age, even more so.

  • Holly Murphy

I’m in the “sometimes showering twice a day camp” sooo…I fear it’s not just celebrities. Increasingly over the last few years, I have notice that I will be out and about somewhere, I walk past someone who appears to be well put together, until the BO hits me in the face. Please shower people. Please.

    • Isabella Muse

Same here! I just use one to destress in the evenings sometimes! Oh no! BO ack!

  • Bonnie Levy

I shower twice a week when I wash my hair and shave my legs. Otherwise I take baths which seem much more festive than showers. But I only bathe on the days I workout or sweat a lot – usually every other day.

  • Adrienne

Oh Muse, I laughed so hard when you used the cleaner version of Mila’s quote. Excuse me but I dont need for dirt and odors to pile up on my person before I say ok nows the time. I was always told growing up stay clean from top to bottom to avoid lice and mites. In addition your hygiene or lack of hygiene can become offensive to others. I think the pandemic started that not showering or brushing teeth but still coming out in public thing. There was the entire avoid deodorant movement but at some point your body is going to secrete sweat that left unchecked may pose a problem. I say to each his own, no need to be obsessive but I see no harm in showering daily (2x depending on activity and weather). Some people avoid baths because they say you are sitting in your own dirt, again preference and preperation. I am loving all the comments!

    • Isabella Muse

lol the crotch part right? Hahaha! I’m all live and let live. If it works for someone, DO IT! Sadly, doesn’t work for me! I like showering too much haha!

  • StellaDiva

I’m a massage therapist and let me tell you a little secret. Everyone has something radiating from their body that doesn’t come from a bottle. It comes from different places, some stronger than others. Not to be gross but we are human. A lot of people don’t bother to shower before a massage and that’s what aromatherapy is for.

    • Isabella Muse

Props to anyone who doesn’t! No judgement from me! Live and let live! I personally like to shower! It wakes me up and makes me feel neat and tidy!

  • Jeanne Zecchine

I shower every morning and sometimes at night, especially in the summer. Morning showers wake me up.

  • Jennifer

Unless I’m in a hospital bed recovering from surgery I take a shower every day. I’m happy to be married to a man who is the same way. I don’t care how often other people shower but just because they think they smell ok doesn’t mean that they do.

    • Isabella Muse

I don’t think you can technically smell your own stench so I agree, even if you don’t think you smell you probably do lol!

  • Daphne

Ok, this is just freaking weird! I’m sorry, but these people are freaks! I thought it was just rock stars that didn’t like to bath, but what is wrong with these people? they can definitely afford the water bill – are they just that lazy? I would love to know what a dermatologist thinks about this, as most will recommend that you wash your face twice a day (especially if you wear makeup or sunscreen) Glad I don’t work with these people, because they have to stink! I cannot live without showering and washing my hair every day, and if I work out, I will shower again. Just weird!
