It Was All Very Well to Say Drink Me, But……

A drink to make me smaller? Nay!

I much prefer Shel Silverstein’s Drink Me which makes the drinker taller!

“She drank from a bottle called Drink Me And she grew so tall, She ate from a plate called Taste Me And down she shrank so small. And so she changed, while other folks Never tried nothin’ at all. It’s a quote that’s always stuck with me because it reminds me that I need to try new things and if I don’t I’m missing out. Does that make sense? Because sometimes in life as much as we treasure our everyday lives and routine sometimes we need to take things further and embrace new things and change!

In Lewis Carrol’s story, Alice didn’t grow taller when she drank the elixir that read “Drink Me” instead she grew much smaller! She shrunk to a tiny ten inches. As I am already quite short I think I should like the delicious cakes labeled Eat Me so I might grow taller because I’m a short girl living in a tall world ya know?

Today my dear friends we’ll discuss what Alice smells like…..

Does she smell of old dusty books? Sunshine and tea? Or perhaps a potion that’s mixed with cherry-tart, custard, pineapple, roast turkey, toffee, and hot buttered toast?

As you can see here I have an incredibly rare 10 ML bottle of Drink Me. Yes, there was a time 10ML glass apothecary bottles were a thing at the Lab. I have both 10ML bottles of Eat Me and Drink Me because at one time in my life I was obsessed with Alice’s adventures as much as Beth was. Beth is the creator and part-owner of Black Phoenix Alchemy Labs as you know and she’s expressed time and time again that all of the Wonderland blends are her very favorite because of her love of the books. All of them grace my collection but the only larger bottles I own are that of Eat Me and Drink Me. The reason I purchased such larger bottles was that I had a mad, mad idea to do this Alice-themed vanity set up because I had purchased a few very old Victorian laudanum bottles at an antique store and I wanted to fill them with the two fragrances. And create it I did! There were antique china cups holding all my pretty Jill Stuart Lipglosses, laudanum bottles with cross and bones imprinted on each that was filled to the very brim with the sweet scents that are Eat Me and Drink Me, and of course, there were many, many red eyeshadows to represent a beloved villainess, the mighty Queen of Hearts!

I have hopes I’ll re-create the scene again one day soon because I own those gorgeous ZeeSea Cosmetics Palettes which I didn’t possess back in the day when I created that Wonderland-themed vanity set up! Perhaps soon as currently my vanity is filled with the madness of Poe and the Mysteries of Udolpho because I’m feeling very goth and romantic with the spooky season upon us.

so Alice ventured to taste it, and, finding it very nice (it had, in fact, a sort of mixed flavor of cherry-tart, custard, pine-apple, roast turkey, toffy, and hot buttered toast), she very soon finished it off.

Why does it sound like Alice’s first taste of Drink Me was like eating one of those Brach Turkey Dinner Candy Corns with all the flavors of a Thanksgiving Dinner? Green Beans, Roasted Turkey, Cranberry Sauce, Ginger Glazed Carrot, Sweet Potato Pie, and Stuffing oh my!

I mean, the cherry tart sounds delightful and the custard and pineapple quite delicious, and the toffy (toffee) a warm, tasty treat but the roast turkey and hot buttered toast did throw me a curveball dear, Alice. It does sound like you had your Sunday Roast along with your pudding in one go my dear, dear girl.

Fear, not friends….! There are two things you can rest easy about the first is that Drink Me will not make you ten inches too small and secondly, it doesn’t smell like roast turkey nor hot buttered toast.

In the bottle, this is buttery with an underlying cherry note. Wet on my skin it’s pure sweet, tart cherry, and wait for it because as it dries but remains every so slightly wet pineapple comes out to play delicately with the cherry notes. Sweet, fruity, tart, delicious. But wait, it morphs again, settles, and dries down where a cupcake accord comes out to play. Vanilla custard? No…cake? Yes! The sweet fruits have disappeared now and the buttery rich scent of cupcake dominates. Several minutes in and the scent morphs yets further and a bit of cherry mixes with the cake note. I don’t smell the toffee everyone tends to speak of just a delightful cherry cupcake throughout the rest of the wear. Just rich buttery cake and cherry all the way that lingers on and on until you scrub it all away.

So, perhaps, my friends this is what Alice smells like. A potion that she sipped leaving her smelling of cupcakes and cherries….!

What do you think Alice smelled like?

Was it the scent of Drink Me or something else?

Drink Me is very readily available on the Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab website for your purchasing pleasure.

Muse, can you review Jabberwocky next? He’s a fav of mine (from the book, not the perfume).

    • Isabella Muse

absolutely Elisa! Jabberwocky it is! “Beware the Jabberwock, my son! The jaws that bite, the claws that catch! A great one for the spooky season! I’ll do it next week!

  • Heather

I am a fan of the original Alice perfume blend and that’s what she smells like to me!

    • Isabella Muse

ah yes Heather. Indeed she probably does! Milk and honey with tiny tea roses, carnation and bergamot yes?

    • Isabella Muse

Ah yes we can’t forget out tired, depressed little mouse! He’s there too! And he smells of vanilla, two different ambers, sweet pea, and a dash of white sandalwood. Personally, I think he smelled of a warm blanket on a rainy day and a hot cup of cocoa but that’s just me!

    • Isabella Muse

excellent question Andrew. I’d say around 2013? They were originally on the trading post and moved to the permanent blends (and relabeled) somewhere around 2013.

      • Dana

i know the Mad Tea Party series was available on the regular BPAL site in 2005 because that’s when i got hooked on Two, Five, and Seven. but Eat Me & Drink Me i think both came out in 2006. i don’t remember either of them being on the BPTP site but… that’s not to say they weren’t! i didn’t shop the Trading Post too much back in those days.

        • Isabella Muse

sorry, I should have clarified, in 2013 they were on BPTP for a spell. But yes, in 2005, they had several breakdowns collections and the Mad Tea Party was one such breakdown. But correct me if I’m nuts. That’s when Alice and White Rabbit were two of the top blends everyone was talking about!

That’s actually a list that could take me days to complete haha…! Indeed, there are a lot of Etsy Wonderland Collections! How about I do a roundup soom?
