My Experience With Homeworx Candle Shipping from Ulta

As you know Homeworx Candles are on sale at ulta.com! The larger 4-Wick Candles are $15 each which is a steal! Sadly, I’ve had the worst experience with candles shipping from Ulta. The last time I ordered four candles from Homeworx and they came cracked and broken. That wasn’t a big deal as I thought I’d call Ulta and they’d send out a new shipment.

Nope.

Customer Care was awful. I offered to send photos and show them the damage but nope, they had to get a supervisor involved and the supervisor had to get someone else involved and it was a lot of around the table to get a return done. Finally, they told me take them back to a store. At which point I explained that wasn’t a good idea as someone would get hurt as the candles were shattered. But they insisted. So, always I went to the store. And yup, someone got hurt. As the poor girl behind the counter was processing my return she ended up cutting her finger on a shard of the glass.

Sigh.

Ulta, you did not handle the situation well.

Needless to say ordering more candles made me wildly wary. But at $15 I was willing to take a small chance and I ordered Gingerbread Mocha and Sugared Beignets and boy am I ever glad I took a chance! Ulta has obviously learned something from the last shipping issue. First off, I ordered these I believe Tuesday and I got them yesterday! Super fast shipping yay! Secondly, they packaged the candles in a double box for safety with two egg cartons that help them snuggler in the box which means they didn’t move or shift during shipment. Both arrived to me safe and sound with no cracks or breakage. I was every so delighted they learned from the “toss in the box with a sheet of bubble wrap and ship” method they were using before.

I thought I’d say just in case you had a horrible experience as I did when purchasing Homeworx from Ulta.

If you want to take advantage of the sale hopefully this puts your mind at ease!

Hi! I love your blog and have been reading it on a daily basis. I really appreciate all your insight and reviews.

That is truly a shame about Ulta. I ordered the new Ouai candles from Ulta pretty much as soon as they came out. One was completely cracked when it arrived. I contacted customer service and no questions asked, they shipped me a new one. Thankfully the one arrived fine.

The past few times I’ve ordered nail polish from Ulta, they all arrive shattered. I’ve never had an issue getting them to ship replacements. It makes me wonder if different brands have different requirements for returns/replacements. It really sucks that they gave you a hassle– they need to work to give better conditions to their warehouse staff and make better packing guidelines. I almost don’t want to do mail order with Ulta anymore…

i hate stores who are un-accomodating with returns! they should have just shipped you a new one no questions asked. just the other day i had ordered a coffee mug from hallmark and it was totally broken when it arrived. i called the 800 number, gave them my order number and they said they were shipping a new one out and to throw the broken one away. i could not have been more pleased. that is totally what ulta should have done for you! btw those candle scents sound amazing!

I ordered them once when they first were at Ulta and they were in the shipping box with only one small piece of bubble wrap. Needless to say they were both shattered on arrival. They were sold out online and they gave me a refund with no problem. I never ordered again though. But, that was in the early days, so maybe after everyone was getting their candles in a shattered state they made it harder because they had to send replacements.? That disregards the safety of others to insist that a candle with broken glass be returned to storethat poor sales associate! I am glad to hear shipping has improved.

I think with Ulta it really depends on the person doing the packing. And, with the holidays, there are probably a lot of seasonal workers. My packages are usually fine, but my last box was hilarious. I only ordered a few small items, but it came in this huge box literally 5x the size of the items. This isn’t unusual, except there was zero padding or bubble wrap. Someone just decided to take an enormous box, toss a few small items in it, tape it shut, and ship it off. Needless to say, half the box was crushed due to the vast emptiness inside. Amazingly, nothing was damaged.

I find with Ulta CS it depends on who you get. Those candles should have been re-shipped no questions asked, and you shouldnt of had to return them. Id let them know that the person at the register cut herself because of their idiocy.

I posted a comment about my broken candles too on your other candle post but I just wanted to add that return customer service has seriously declined in the last couple of months. I dont know whats going on with pandemic times. I had FedEx lose two packages in this last month; one of them was a Sephora return and Sephora told me to call FedEx because they couldnt do anything about it. Im before times, they wouldve just refunded me. In fairness, shipping has been terrible last couple of months and Im sure everyone is dealing with a plethora of issues that are really the shippers fault. I filed a claim with FedEx. I feel like pandemic times is worse now than last year. Besides shipping issues, Im having trouble getting responses from people, contractors to come to the house, feels like everything is slow.

Gosh, I’m so sorry that happened to you and also the employee who had to handle the hazard! Ulta seriously needs to resolve how they pack and ship fragile items including perfume and pressed powders. At the same time, they also need to focus on their phone CS. I’ve had broken products arrive at least twice in bubble mailers or it being a small item in a large box. The first time, I called the ulta number and was told I had to go in store but they wouldn’t honor the sale price during an exchange if I went in person. The representative had been trained to avoid reshipping a replacement as much as possible. I politely asked for all options, insisted the mistake was on the company’s part, and finally at my request, the rep admitted ulta could reship it. I wonder what happens with online exclusives. The second time, I took the broken product in person and warned the employee it’ll make a mess if opened. The employee had to inspect it (I’m guessing LP policy), and boom! Pigment allll over their counter. We both felt bad. The third time, I brought in two more products smashed in shipping. Different company: a BB&B supervisor mandated that I bring in drinking glasses smashed into powder and both the employee and I got cut!
