Sylvie Grateau Would Probably Not Approve If Charlotte Tilbury Came to Ulta

The rumors are swirling that Charlotte Tilbury will be coming to Ulta soon! Yup, Charlotte Tilbury will be sold at Ulta according to a variety of sources swirling around the Internet today. And guess what? Sylvie Grateau would not approve.

Haha…! If you haven’t watched Emily in Paris let me give you a recap. Sylvie Grateau is the chief marketing officer for Savoir’s. Savoir’s is a luxury marketing agency located in Paris. As you probably already suspect Sylvie is a snob and doesn’t want to pollute or cheapen the luxury brand image.

You know one time a brand actually contacted me, I won’t say who, via e-mail to tell me not to use “cheap or budget” when writing about them. Some brands just don’t want to be associated with the image that comes to mind when you say something is “cheap”. Sylvie pretty much believes luxury is luxury and should stay luxury and not lower its standards. But we live in a brave new world and luxury brands are slowly realizing they have to be more readily available to mass population versus being in an exclusive unattainable club.

Sephora isn’t necessarily a luxury store but they have been associated with luxury brands for a very long time. Ulta, however, has intermingled their higher-end, mid-range, and drugstore makeup brands altogether giving them a more budget friendly feel. But things have involved considerably for Ulta and they have begun carrying a very wide area of brands such as MAC, NARS, Chanel, Tom Ford Fragrancs, and many others.

The world of luxury has changed considerably over the past ten years. It’s not as out of reach as it once was and it’s quite common place for luxury goods to go on sale. Beautiful things are meant to be enjoyed by all don’t you think?

So, in the end, I doubt Sylvie would approve of Charlotte Tilbury being sold at Ulta but if they do come to Ulta I wouldn’t mind in the least. Ulta’s every expanding brand portfolio and many perks have really made shopping with them a true pleasure lately.

Take note Sephora.

About the Muse

Isabella MuseIsabella is just an average everyday geeky girl who doesn’t blend her eyeshadow correctly, wears too much blush, and hopes she never finds her holy grail products because she likes the thrill of the chase so much. Her mission is to bring you super honest reviews on makeup, skincare, fragrance and all things beauty. She’s in no way an expert on the topic and she sure as hell isn’t a super model. But she’s passionate about makeup and is seeking like-minded individuals that like pina coladas, getting caught in the rain, and ones that enjoy spending hundreds of dollars at Sephora without feeling buyer’s remorse. Maybe it’ll get Sephora to finally offer better perks for their VIB/Rouge members. I hardly ever shop at Ulta because the brands I use aren’t typically sold at Ulta and I just prefer a different shopping experience, but even I recognize that they have a way better rewards system. Heck, everyone has a better rewards system than Sephora, it seems. LOL!

There was a time that brands ‘stepped down’ from big S to Ulta. Now it’s HE brands joining Ulta as well as, at times after big S. I wish I could remember what brands U had at the beginning here and how long ago it was. I got some Iman. There were some DS to midrange lines I had never heard of. In retrospect, I think they might have been house brands, like Kohls had, now discontinued. I had to google it, but Flirt and American Beauty w/ Ashley Judd. The Ulta ones also bit the dust. I agree that CT is a coup for Ulta, but not necessarily a slap to Ulta. Ulta is winning a fair fight.

I appreciate the mix of high and low at Ulta and find myself shopping there 10x as much as I do at Sephora. Ulta also has much better discounts and gifts with purchase. I might pick up a cute thing once in a while browsing at Sephora, but Ulta is where I turn to when I need something. I’m so over the “exclusivity” of some brands. Plenty of other options out there.

As do I lately. The perks are fantastic and they carry more and more brands I love 🙂 I think “exclusivity” is slowly phasing out as brands realize they need to be more accessible and shed their “I’m a luxury brand” image.

Thanks for that information. I’m not sure why they feel it would cheapen their brand image because the prices certainly won’t change! Im pretty sure as “prestige” the products would be excluded from coupons. They can do what other brands have done and not make everything available and certain things you must purchase on their website. I have this with Sunday Riley, Chanel, First Aid and Farmacy where Ulta and/or Sephora have limited products. The best part for customers would be if the products are physically carried in the store to avoid a min purchase threshhold for free shipping.
    Thanks for sharing

    Isabella,

Cheap is a valued loaded term and is meant to be insulting. I prefer to use the term inexpensive or fairly priced. Charlotte Tilbury is in business to sell its products to anyone who will buy them, wherever they can be sold. Charlotte is a brand that hasn’t worked out for me and I find the products too expensive for what they are and the quality isn’t better than any other “prestige” brand.

I would love to see them at Ulta and would love to try new things without the pressure of a commissioned sales person dogging me. No one should depend on fictitious characters for business advice including Charlotte Tilbury. There is just too much money at stake.

Always my love to you and what you do.

Hi Genie! It is, you’re correct. I think in the beauty world it can go either way. Some people embrace it and think of it was a form of “budget beauty” where as others find it insulting. I normally use “budget friendly” but I’ve been known to dub something cheap. I have to admit I do like CT but for a prestige brand the quality isn’t exactly what you pay for. I appreciate her softer shades and nice glow. I feel like it works for me as I tend to go a lot softer with my makeup in recent years. But really, the quality can be much better for the price. Ulta would be a nicer experience than a counter that’s for sure. I dislike the pressure of a counter or even lately, Sephora, feels very pressured with SAs following me around asking to help. Thanks Genie I truly appreciate that 🙂

Yay! This is great news. I love Charlotte Tillbury Happikiss Lipstick balm and would love to get a discount with Ulta points.

Great topic. Sylvie is an interesting character. I don’t buy anything anymore from Sephora. Ulta has been the place for me. I would be thrilled if CT is sold there so I could actually see/ sample shades. I luv the points & special discounts. I try to shop strategically to get the best bang for my buck as I know you do as well.

She is indeed! I can’t wait to see how things go for her in s3. I’m oddly cheerleading over here for her! I’m def more of an Ulta person lately too. I used to adore Sephora but Ulta def is the go to for me lately.

Charlotte Tilbury has just arrived in Mecca in Melbourne, Aus and it’s lovely to see a new brand come here to check out and swatch for yourself. Mind you, the prices that Mecca charges for the priviledge of having CT here is astronomical…..
A lot of HE brands such as Lancome, Guerlain, YSL need to be more accessible at realistic prices for them to stay solvent in this new pandemic world we are living in.
I think it’s a big yay if CT comes to your Ulta…..

  • Rebecca

To me CT doesn’t feel luxurious compared to other brands. Some of the packaging is pretty, and I like the makeup itself. It’s not heavy and they definitely cut costs to themselves with everything being plastic. Ulta’s perks are better!
