What are the most annoying things about make and beauty for you? Anything that gets under your skin and enrages you?

If you asked me this question about three or so years ago I’d have told you the endless rounds of new releases. A few years ago it felt like every minute of every day was a some new release. In particular, eyeshadow palettes we’re releasing at a rapid-fire pace. It’s one trend I’m glad died down. Releases seem more normal nowadays! For example, both Tarte and Colourpop (as well as Too Faced) have really slowed their roll.

What annoys me most about the makeup and beauty world at the moment?

I’ll share mine if you share yours.

Out of Stock Items Everywhere
Target, Walmart, everywhere I go lately the displays are completely bare. I want to blame this on supply issues and the pandemic but some part of me believes it’s also Tiktok and every single product going viral for absolutely no reason. Even older items that have been around for years are out of stock because some Tiktok raved them. It drives me nuts going to Target and seeing the shelves so torn up and empty.

What’s Old Is New Again
Speaking of Tiktokers making products go out of stock…..even older products are out of stock like I said above but I have to admit it’s a pet peeve of mine watching Tiktokers rave about a “brand new product” or acting like an item just launched when it’s been around five years or more. For some reason, this irks the hell out of me and makes me want to comment, “Ummm hi this isn’t new!” It’s like they are just discovering Maybelline Lipstick for the first time in their lives and promoting it to their fanbase as the best, newest lipstick evers. It makes me rage so hard. I’m sorry but it does.

Viral Everything
This leads me to the viral issue…..Jesus, is everything viral? I remember everyone going ape sh*t for L’Oreal Paris Infallible Fresh Wear Foundation in a Powder and Kat Von D Good Apple Foundation. I called both of these items out when people were raving them so hard they were literally sold out everywhere. Much later, I finally started hearing people who purchased it during the viral craze saying they hated both. I just don’t get it. Some items seem to go viral just because….! It makes me sad how quickly everyone jumps on something because an influencer on Tiktok told them they NEED it in a 60 second video.

So, that’s what’s annoying me lately in the world of beauty.

How about you?

Is anything really getting on your nerves?

Isabella MuseIsabella is just an average everyday geeky girl who doesn’t blend her eyeshadow correctly, wears too much blush, and hopes she never finds her holy grail products because she likes the thrill of the chase so much. Her mission is to bring you super honest reviews on makeup, skincare, fragrance and all things beauty. She’s in no way an expert on the topic and she sure as hell isn’t a super model. Celeb beauty & skincare lines. When John Legend has a line… enough is enough!

Brands releasing gimmicky products or color stories that no one wants. Examples that come to mind are the MAC Stranger Things collab that they can’t seem to even give away. And also the new UD Lip Bond which looks like it’s destined straight for the bargain bin.

Just the overall “blah” vibe of beauty in general these days. Maybe it’s just me. But IMO the industry in general burned itself out during the frenzied years of rapid fire releases. There’s only so many ways to package and market cosmetics and it all feels so very repetitive at this point. Especially with hundreds of brands saturating the market. I couldn’t even tell you the last time a release caught my eye.

    • Isabella Muse

NO! does he? LOL! that was one I didn’t hear and yes, celebs have been jumping on the bandwagon non-stop lately. I guess the $$ isn’t coming in as quickly and makeup was the next route to take. Oh god! the new UD lippie had me thinking the SAME thing. I was like, yup, $10 during the Ulta Fall 21 Days of Beauty Sale probably.

Idk. Christine likes ‘‘em so far and the swatches look good. But people are wise to cheaper dupes and Maybelline has one. Some of us have written off UD, but secretly want the old, edgy UD back. Secretly rooting for our old crush. Christine is going to review the Maybelline as well.

Yes! Skincare must be really inexpensive to make because everyone is coming out with a line.

I share your irritation and frustration with stuff being constantly out of stock. It’s beyond irritating. I didn’t make the connection between SM and people snatching everything up because some rando influencer told them they need it. But then again, I’d rather stab myself in the eye than listen to an influencer. I know you pretty much have to keep on top of all of the SM goings on for the sake of this blog. And I salute you for it. It’s got to be a frustrating slog a lot of the time.

    • Isabella Muse

I have daily debates with myself whether it is supply issues or Tiktok making everyone crazy and snatching things up! Honestly, I’m the same way. It can be a little irritating at times. I feel a bit old listening to the endless you need this. I probably sounded the same ten years ago so I should STFU. Some are really great and I love their content others are like sitting through a root canal sadly!

The constant outages in stores is terrible. Our neighborhood Target and Walmart are particularly egregious with this – I blame it on bad management, because these stores are terrible about stocking everything, not just beauty products. Also when a store puts out the product early (looking at you Ulta) and by the time the advertisements appear, they are already sold out and they probably won’t get more in.

Limited edition releases of anything have always annoyed me, because it drives people to run out and buy up every product in the release and then of course the stores cannot restock, and they sell out online as well. . Then if you do get something and you really like it, you know you will never see it again, unless it becomes part of their permanent line, which things rarely ever do.

My third complaint is not something that will probably change, but cosmetics companies that insist on doing business with China, because China demands animal testing on all products. Many of the large companies will claim to be cruelty-free, which they might be in the U.S. and/or Europe, but if they are doing business with China, then they are still doing animal testing on the products that are sold there, so they are not truly 100% cruelty free.

I agree about LE and I’m not just talking makeup. There are so many LE releases for Halloween and random cute items that launch like clothing or sneakers and they sell out super fast because people tend to buy them up to re-sell them on mercari. And I never get a chance to get any of it. Like Target had a bunch of new Halloween plants that were sold in minutes and I know they’ll pop up on mercari for triple the cost. Likewise, for Bath and Body Works Halloween! It was gone in moments and again, I know flippers will sell it for triple the cost. It makes me so angry. Lately, even for stuff that isn’t LE, I feel like you gotta buy it when you see it because if you come back later for it 99.9% of the time it will be gone and never seen again!

Son of a beehive. I’ve lost my comment twice. I’ll take the barbecue fork for my eyes. I asked a 6 y.o. what she wanted to be…a YouTuber, not a STEM maven, or a programmer, or even a mommy. What the everlovin’… Even the renowned scientists aren’t immune. Steven Pinker, who is the god of cog(nition) etc is not immune. This guy is famous, MIT, and wrote many theories (that are mostly above my head…). Check out his photo in the NYT article. Just google his name and scroll. Said to self, wtf! Even stratospheric academics have stylists and feature themselves as a brand. This influence bit is vast, dreadful, and narcissistic. Steven Pinker has a stylist, eieio. COTY air spin powder! Wonderful. New, perfect for you needs. Demo. Age 16. The dumb broad doesn’t even know that it’s legacy and has been around since 1935. Instant experts with little knowledge. And you HAVE TO BE A CREATOR THERE. Podcasters, bloggers, nurses, scientists, everybody. I might click over about dogs, concealers, natural history, Muse insta, etc. but I would never subscribe to any SM. The self-importance and aggrandizement drives me wild. I get that it’s ultra short form, but there it is…allFORM, no real CONTENT

Count me in with the out-of stock group. The Target and Ulta stores closest to my house are a joke and have been for a few years now, even pre-pandemic.

    • Isabella Muse

major suck here. It was fine before the pandemic but after it was never the same!

  • Rebecca

I agree with pretty much EVERYTHING people have shared here. Limited edition everything, the constant new brands (celeb and otherwise), also, the price creep. A few brands have recently said they’d need to raise some prices due to current events, but drugstore brands had been increasing their prices before now.

    • Isabella Muse

I agree about drugstore. the prices have been creeping up for years now way before covid!

What annoys me the most is the absolute lies the cosmetics companies claim about their products. If this new one is so great, why don’t you stop there? Why keep going year after year claiming the new products are so amazing, which is basically saying your own product that you are replacing sucked. But it was GREAT when first advertised. How much skincare do you need? Or makeup- and I’m guilty myself of this. I use almost no skin care now- a very few not expensive products and I’m 53 and my skin looks pretty good. And I wasn’t genetically blessed with good skin either. It’s all marketing and bull crap. I read an interview on another site a few years ago with a famous French? (I think) Dermatologist who claimed his expensive items were all silicone free. Um, no. All you had to do was read label and there it was – some form of Dimethicone or another silicone. They all lie, it’s all about the money. And all the celebrity lines. Really- they came up with these items themselves? Um, no. More lies. And IMO it’s getting worse. Makeup, hair care, skincare, all to do with beauty, people seem to be so gullible. I sure was, and it’s hard to break away even when you know you are being spoon fed bull crap. Also, my skin became a bit better when I started KETO about 2 years ago. I eat like no sugar, and I can’t eat dairy due to allergies. So some of it depends on you and what you put in your body and genetics. Which makes the lies even more blatant, to me. One more thing- I also don’t understand the pairing of makeup or skin collections with things that have no bearing on beauty. A MAC Stranger Things Collection? Why???????? Also love the non- comedogenic claims companies make, when all you have to do is read label and see that’s not true a lot either. Every form of algae breaks me out ( Carageenan, etc… lots of different names for algae). It’s also a 5 on the Comedogenic scale which is the worst it can be, but I’ll see products claiming non- comedogenic meanwhile contains some form of algae. I guess I have a lot of issues with these companies come to think of it! 🙂

    • Isabella Muse

It doesn’t bother me too much with lies because we’ve been fed them for so long it just feels normal now LOL! But it does bug me when stuff is always GREAT and WONDERFUl and LIFE CHANGING as told by people who review it. That dries me nuts!

  • Frozendiva

Empty shelves. I wanted to try one of the Dior pink lilac lip products. Either it sold out fast or stores haven’t received their stock. Seems like they want you to buy products online. I would like to actually physically see some products. I have also noticed the shrinking size of beauty/fragrance sections of department stores.

Limited editions selling out within minutes, or so it seems. If it is a spring or summer product I expect to see it around for at least a month after its release. Not because it is not popular- some of us can’t make it to the store on release day.

Price points. New Chanel single eyeshadows are $53 CAD. Some were pretty but I have to see if any stand out to justify the expense. Saw an Estée Lauder lipstick for $128 CAD. Wonder if it does have any diamond in it. It had better be extraordinary at that price. Don’t know if some of the prices are because of the ‘influencers’ or the company can set a price to see if people will buy.

even permanent stuff disappears fast lately. It comes back but it takes a few months! I do wonder if they make limited stock to see how it sells before restocking it if it does well.
