Kohl’s Suffers Substantial Losses

Kohl’s saw second-quarter same-store sales drop 7.7% as we settle deeper into inflation. Kohl’s current earnings are $2.80-$3.20 a share which is nearly 50% less than the forecast of $6.45-$6.85. Consumer spending is grossly down which results in a lot of profit margin busting markdowns which we’ll see well into the holidays to clear unsold inventory from prior seasons.

One wonders how Sephora will do with this considering Kohl’s estimated 2 billion in sales to investors from the opening of Sephora locations in stores. As you know 1,100 Sephora stores with their own entrances opened across the US within Kohl’s stores.

I haven’t been to a Kohl’s store in ages but apparently, the clearance racks are loaded with tons of clothing, accessory, and home clearance from seasons past.

I personally though Sephora opening in Kohl’s was not only weird but a bad idea and here we are not even a year into that event and things are going rather poorly. Apparently the Sephora locations within Kohl’s are less than busy!

How sad.

We’ll have to see how Kohl’s does into 2023. I hope all goes well for them!

About the Muse

Isabella MuseIsabella is just an average everyday geeky girl who doesn’t blend her eyeshadow correctly, wears too much blush, and hopes she never finds her holy grail products because she likes the thrill of the chase so much. Her mission is to bring you super honest reviews on makeup, skincare, fragrance and all things beauty. She’s in no way an expert on the topic and she sure as hell isn’t a super model. But she’s passionate about makeup and is seeking like-minded individuals that like pina coladas, getting caught in the rain, and ones that enjoy spending hundreds of dollars at Sephora without feeling buyer’s remorse. Boy I hope so too. I was in a kohls Sephora a couple weeks ago and it was actually fairly busy so I’m hoping it stays that way… plus I just like kohl’s for several things, so I do hope it sticks around….

Kohl’s hasn’t updated the plus size section in forever. I’m so disappointed when I visit. The selection is lacking and there is no thought to the displays or design of the area.

It’s funny, when I was talking to a JCP assoc about Sephora going to Kohl’s, she said “yeah, I hear they are doing worse than us…” Didn’t think anything of it at the time other than it was a weird comment. Makes a bit more sense now, I guess.

I get what Kohl’s is trying to do, but they should have looked at all the areas they decided to build a Sephora in more carefully. Scaling and offering products can go two ways and I’m concerned for them.
Also, they took a huge chunk of clothes out of the women’s section of clothes. I get the need for extra space but..

Where I am, the market is heavily saturated. Target, Kohl’s and Ulta are all in the same parking lot.

Likewise, on saturation! Sephora freestanding store is like 5 minutes away from the Kohl’s sephora. WHY? And really, when making a choice between going to Kohl’s for my Sephora fix or going to an actual Sephora store it’s going to be the store that gets my money as the Kohl’s one doesn’t have all the brands I want to browse or buy!

Yep, or I’m going to order online from Sephora because free shipping!

right? I just don’t want to go to Kohl’s because Sephora is there. I have absolutely no reason to do that!? Maybe if I lived in a small town with no access to Sephora it would be awesome. But I’m NY, Sephora is everywhere!

I’m not surprised – they have so little clothing selection now that a huge chunk of their selling space is taken up by the Sephora, smack in the middle of the store (this one does not have a separate entrance). The biggest tell for me is that it’s no longer hard to find parking near an entrance, even on Saturdays.

I have a Kohl’s near me which opened a Sephora within the store about a year or so ago. Across the street is a strip mall with a stand alone Sephora. I always thought it was strange to open a Sephora within Kohl’s which is smaller than the one across the street.

It’s like subways and dunkins. Around here they’ll be a dunkins on one end of the street and another directly across the street. it’s like WTF?

I saw an article recently about how stores that have mostly loungewear in stock (because they planned their inventory a year ago) are struggling, as consumers look towards occasion-wear. Not sure how true it is, but I do have that problem in a kohls right now where there are huge loungewear and athleisure sections, and fewer options for regular clothing. Especially in Juniors, so much of the stock is of uncomfortable cheap fabric or very thin fabric. It’s a shame, because I used to love a Kohls
