Trader Joe’s Brazil Nut Body Scrub Review
Trader Joe’s Brazil Nut Body Scrub ($5.99) is a new sugar body scrub that was released to compliment the Brazil Nut Body Butter that’s been compared to Sol de Janeiro’s Bum Bum Cream. Brazil Nut Body Butter was released last year and was impossible to find as it instantly became a viral dupe sensation of the beloved, cult-favorite Bum Bum Cream with its tropical, gourmand scent.
It only made sense for Trader Joe’s to cash in on the success of the body butter and do a body scrub as well. Both products are available for a limited run this Summer so hurry and I really mean hurry to your local store if you want the scrub as in my area they started putting them out last night and there were only two on the shelves I managed to grab. I know in the OC they were limiting purchases on both the scrub and body butter at two per person. And I respect and appreciate that because too many people are buying all of it up and proceeding to sell it for $15 and upwards on E-bay, Amazon, Mercari, etc….! We have no such limits in place here as of yet but if you’re on the West Coast you may see them in place!
The scrub comes in an 8 oz tube for $5.99 compared to Sol de Janeiro Bum Bum Body Scrub which is $42 at 7.8 oz. It has an attached lid which you can flip up to get access to the scrub. I can’t stress how much I love this packaging. The body butter also shares a similar lid. When you’re in the shower sometimes it’s a pain to unscrew a big old tub of scrub! It’s nice just being able to flip it up for access. As for the body butter, it’s nice the lid is attached as I’m not misplacing it or perhaps my hands are wet, and unscrewing it can be a chore. The attached lid is def a nice touch and a big improvement over the bulkier lids that Sol de Janiero uses which sometimes aren’t always easy to screw back on correctly.
SUCROSE, COCOS NUCIFERA (COCONUT) OIL, SODIUM CHLORIDE, HELIANTHUS ANNUUS (SUNFLOWER) SEED OIL, FRAGRANCE, SIMMONDSIA CHINENSIS (JOJOBA) SEED OIL, SILICA, BERTHOLLETIA EXCELSA (BRAZIL NUT) SEED OIL, CETEARYL OLIVATE, SORBITAN OLIVATE, SYNTHETIC WAX, PHENOXYETHANOL, GLYCERIN, COCOS NUCIFERA (COCONUT) SHELL POWDER, TOCOPHEROL, GLYCINE SOJA (SOYBEAN) OIL, WATER (AQUA), PAULLINIA CUPANA SEED EXTRACT, ALOE BARBADENSIS LEAF EXTRACT.
Sucrose, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Sodium Chloride, Cetearyl Olivate, Sorbitan Olivate, Olus Oil (Vegetable Oil, Huile Végétale), Parfum (Fragrance), Silica, Euterpe Oleracea (Açaí) Fruit Oil, Theobroma Grandiflorum (Cupuaçu) Seed Powder, Theobroma Grandiflorum (Cupuaçu) Seed Butter, Paullinia Cupana (Guaraná) Seed Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Tocopherol, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Glycerin, Aqua (Water, Eau), Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Extract, Glyceryl Caprylate, Caprylhydroxamic Acid, Phenoxyethanol, Synthetic Fluorphlogopite, Tin Oxide, Benzyl Alcohol, Benzyl Salicylate, Coumarin, Limonene, CI 77891 (Titanium Dioxide).
As you can see above the two scrubs have very similar ingredients but Bum Bum Body Scrub does go heavier on some oils. It’s also made up of crushed cupuaçu seeds and sugar crystals where as Trader Joe’s version does have cupuaçu seed extract versus Bum Bum Body Scrub which contains cupuaçu seed powder.
As far as texture goes I think the Sol de Janiero formula is a little harsher and more refined where as Trader Joe’s is a bit grittier and harsher. I didn’t mind so much because I have drier skin so a harsher scrub is def one I enjoy. It’s a bit oily as you massage it in but doesn’t contain a bunch of oil within the container as some scrubs are known for (Philosophy I’m talking to you and your liquid-y scrubs). Water does tend to bead off my skin after I rinse this off so that’s testimony to it having a good deal of skin softening oils in it. It sure leaves my skin super soft and smooth. I love using it on the backs of my heals where I tend to get dry skin as well as elbows and knees! My elbows are SUPER smooth after using this!
And of course, I’m sure the scent is what you want to hear about the most! Sorry, but it isn’t quite the dupe I’d want for Bum Bum Cream. Don’t kill me. Everyone is really raving about it hard and making it seem like the perfect dupe but it’s def missing some warmth the original has. I think Sol de Janeiro perfected the scent with a perfect blend of Salted Caramel, Pistachio, and Vanilla. I’m not sure what it is but Trader Joe’s scent seems fainter. It’s very, very, very similar but it lacks the complexity, depth, warmth, and strength of the original. Is it a dupe? I’d say yes but not an exact spot-on duplication of the original! I will say it does have good staying power on skin. If you use the scrub with the body butter it’ll leave you smelling lovely and tropical for a few hours. Yum! I do think Sol de Janeiro’s version is a bit stronger though. I was thinking perhaps the reason I don’t feel it’s an exact dupe is that Trader Joe’s lacks the vanilla not. But in all honesty, I still give TJ’s a 5 our 5 for this! It’s wonderful stuff as is the body butter. Very yummy, very tropical, and perfect for Summer.
Trader Joe’s Brazil Nut Body Scrub is a win! They’ve done it again and provided us solid and more inexpensive version of a product that can be pretty darn costly. I just wish it wasn’t seasonal.
I wonder if next year they’ll go crazy and do a body mist…..!
That would be wild.
