I Had a Fight With My Dad About the Christmas Tree Store’s Bankruptcy

My dad is incredibly stubborn, amazingly loveable, always wants to be right, and very old school. This means we have awesome, passionate fights about nothing and everything. One of those nothing fights was recently over, of all things, the Christmas Tree Store. We were talking about Bed, Bath, and Beyond bankruptcy and although Christmas Tree Store is no longer a part of Bed, Bath, and Beyond, I said to him, “I went last week and wow it was really empty”. I wasn’t talking about people in the store, I was talking about stock. They really had very little in the store and this is highly unusual because Christmas Tree Store goes all out every single season. And right about now is the time they do Summer which means you’re overloaded with cheap thrills for your backyard, porch, and patio.

My dad loves working outdoors. He loves planting things and mowing the lawn and building stuff and cleaning outside and re-arranging the garage every other week. He’s a very active person that can’t sit still for even a single second. He has an incredible work ethic and even in his retirement he still gets up at 5 AM every day and finds something to do. All this translates as he really likes visiting stores like Home Depot, Lowes, and yeah, the Christmas Tree Store. I admit I actually really love Chrismas Tree Store too for their cute little seasonal decorations.

Anyway, we had a long boring fight when I said “It was really empty! Their stock was awful”. At that moment I also said, “I think they probably aren’t doing so well and I bet they are going to end up like Bed, Bath and Beyond.”

Well, he wasn’t having that He had to prove to himself this was true so, last week he asked me to come with him to the store near him and I was like, “Hell yeah let’s go!” Because his store is A LOT better than my store. It’s bigger, they tend to get a lot more items, and I’ve found some awesome stuff there.

Away we went and when I got there it was def better than my store BUT it was still not what I’d seen from this particular store before and again, I said, “Dad, they really don’t have a lot!” and he went off about how they had so much stuff and I was just picky, etc…etc…

Now I can say I told you so LOL! Because sadly, today, word is out that Christmas Tree Shops may soon file for bankruptcy protection. This doesn’t mean they’ll go out of business but it also doesn’t mean they won’t. It’s sort of a “Let’s see how this goes” situation. No filing has been made yet but reports are saying it may be as soon as next week!

Bed Bath & Beyond sold Christmas Tree Shops to Handil Holdings in November 2020 so, we can’t really blame them for these issues. I am rather saddened to hear it but also, not surprised because the way the stores have been so empty lately aren’t supply issues in my opinion! It felt like they were already going out of business before this news even got posted.

Unfortunately, nothing fails to surprise me in this economy. I wish Christmas Tree Stores well! I hope they’ll still be around but Dad, I was right.

I didn’t know BBB sold Xmas Trees Shops. There used to be a Harmon in my Xmas Tree shop, normally they were in BBB. I also like them for garden stuff (and they are great for Xmas wine bags and such in that season) so I will have to take a peek.

Yeah! About a year or so ago which made me hopeful when BBB started having issues but sadly, they are in trouble too now! YASSS! They always have great christmas stuff! and cheap!

Interesting. I have never heard of Christmas Trees Stores before or their relation to BBB. Is this an “East Coast” only store? I live in Houston, TX

    • Isabella Muse

none in TX as far as I know but they do have some in Georgia and Indiana. The rest are mostly East Coast states like all of New England, NY, NJ, etc…!
