The Ulta 21 Days of Beauty Sale Made Me Realize How Bloody Expensive Makeup Has Gotten

I’m not sure if I’ve been too busy, haven’t been paying attention, or just haven’t restocked on more recent products but damn, makeup has gotten super expensive. Ulta 21 Days of Beauty made me realize just how expensive it got! I was prepping my posts for the week and I was doing the MAC Lipsticks that are on sale today and I realized that even on sale, with 50% off, these were very expensive! These are $17-$17.50 on SALE where as I remember that being the original price of a MAC lipstick (around $19 or so dollars back in the day). The original price is $34-$35. Dude, when were MAC Lipsticks ever $35 bucks? I mean, Guerlain Lipsticks were $48 around 2011-2012!

Another great example, the bareMinerals Original Pure Serum Radiant Natural Liquid Foundation Mineral SPF 20 is now $44. Back in 2017, the Bare Minerals barePro Performance Wear Liquid Foundation was $34. Also, LancômeMonsieur Big Volumizing Mascara and Lancôme Monsieur Big Waterproof Mascara are $15 today but correct me if I’m wrong, didn’t these used to go on sale for around $12?

I’m not knocking the Ulta 21 Days of Beauty Sale as I do think they put a lot of effort into this year’s sale. I didn’t buy as much as I normally do but there were a variety of different items each day and a lot of them not to mention many of the items were new to the sale. Because we all know the Ulta 21 Days of Beauty Sale was getting a little tired and Juice Beauty at 50% off was hitting the way it did 15+ years ago! This year, I saw a big improvement on what was offered. The only issue I had, which wasn’t Ulta’s fault, was the items that were 50% off felt like they weren’t even on sale due to the inflated price in the makeup world at the moment.

We had some moments where deals were like $12 bucks but a lot more moments where deals were $20+ and it made it feel like I was paying original price for it versus getting it at 50% off. Was anyone else feeling like that? Maybe because a lot of what was on sale isn’t what I use or purchase often so, I haven’t taken note of the price increases on these items post-pandemic! And you know what? I wouldn’t mind a price increase TOO much of the quality and formulas were somehow better than they once were or at the very LEAST stayed the same. But things are getting more and more expensive and the quality is going downhill!

Did you notice this? Or am I crazy?

Totally right. Food is worse. I had to buy a new iPad. Found myself musing [pun intended] that the 13” iPad didn’t cost as much as a month of food…..for one.

Makeup has gotten very expensive in the last few years. I stick to the basics and products that i know work for me specially MAC , Lancome and Clinique. My MAC foundation used to be $28.00 and now it is $44.00!

It’s not just high-end stuff, a Maybelline mascara at Target can run $15.99. You used to be able to do a whole drugstore face for that.

Yes, I noticed it, and it’s one of the reasons why I’m buying very little makeup and almost nothing outside of replacing what I use. I hardly ever try something new – I don’t need it and it’s now too much money to risk if it doesn’t work for me.
