What Still Excites You About Makeup and Beauty?

Unlike Zoomers, I fail to get excited about makeup collections and beauty as fast as I once did. For example, this morning the R.E.M. Beauty Wicked Makeup Collection preview dropped and I LOVE Wicked. I’ve seen it a dozen times and I’ll likely see it a dozen more. I know all the parts by heart, know all the songs, and you’ll likely hear me singing Popular in my shower most mornings! I think if they dropped this collection ten or more years ago I’d have been over the moon to own every single piece of it. But nowadays I find myself looking at it with a more critical eye. I asked myself if I have shades like the ones in the palette and I asked myself would I actually use the palette as the shades aren’t terribly exciting to me and they look like cooler pastels. If I created a Wicked Collection I’d love to have plenty of rich greens to represent Elphaba and soft baby pinks, roses, and golds to compliment Galinda. R.E.M. Beauty’s Wicked Collection is a lot softer than I’d go for.

That being said, I question if they did release several years ago would I pass it by because I know pastels don’t look good on me or would I have grabbed it anyway because it was Wicked inspired? I think I’d probably have purchased it as a Wicked fan but as I said nowadays, I think with my head not my fan girl heart.

I think hardcore makeup junkies are still out there and I think they still get very excited about every release the way I used to but I think a majority of them are likely a lot younger than I am. So, where as they are just discovering how fun makeup is and how exciting new releases are I’ve already been through all that and back again. Which means I’ve come full circle and I’ve reached a stage in my life where I feel I’ve seen, tried, and done it all in the makeup world and a lot of new launches are repetitive or just not up to the standard of what I remember back ten years ago. My dad always likes to tell us they don’t make movies like they used and proceeds to tell us how the Towering Inferno and The Poseidon Adventure were what true movies should look like. “None of this CGI crap!” according to him. I think I’ve turned into my father when it comes to makeup as all I can think is, “This was so MUCH better years ago!” I’m not sure if I’m just getting older and not appreciating today’s formulas or if the formulas have just gone downhill! I choose to believe they aren’t nearly as good as they once were.

That being said sometimes I still get excited about makeup and beauty. What still excites you about makeup and beauty?

As for me I still get excited about some things in beauty! I think I will forever be excited about new fragrance launches. I am ashamed and embarrassed to admit to any of you how many bottles of perfume I have but it’s truly a passion of mine and I always tell myself, “No more!” but I haven’t yet been able to say no. Fragrance is one item in the beauty world that very much still excites me. I also turned into a major skincare addict in my older age. I’ve always loved it but it’s more so now that I am older and I still do get pretty excited about skincare drops!

I’ve slowed my roll when it comes to Japanese and Korean makeup launches and it isn’t because I don’t love them. I’d actually probably buy more if there was anything of interest I really wanted but honestly, a lot of K and J-Beauty launches aren’t as pretty and as great as they once were so, I sort of fell off with them! But they do still excite me!

And on a rare day I think makeup releases still do capture my eye! I love a good budget drop that ends up being amazing for the price. Not all are but sometimes you find that a blush that didn’t cost a small fortune and it’s amazing! I find that very exciting!

How about you? Does all makeup and beauty still excite you are you a bit less excited about makeup lately? Do share!

Isabella MuseIsabella is just an average everyday geeky girl who doesn’t blend her eyeshadow correctly, wears too much blush, and hopes she never finds her holy grail products because she likes the thrill of the chase so much. Her mission is to bring you super honest reviews on makeup, skincare, fragrance and all things beauty. She’s in no way an expert on the topic and she sure as hell isn’t a super model. Sadly, nothing excites me anymore about makeup or even skincare. I’ve been buying it since long before the internet when things were new and I couldn’t wait for the new “collections” to come out. New collections for Estee Lauder was maybe 3 times a year with a few products, now that was so exciting to me. Now, nothing. If you remove the pretty packaging, it’s all the same. I miss those days of excitement.

I miss those days too! 🙁 I think the waiting really did make me even more excited now there is something new every single day and I feel overwhelmed 🙁

About new formulas, I think two things are at work here: 1. Catering to vegans and those who won’t touch talc due to fear it’s contaminated with asbestos, and 2. Trying to maximize their profit on everything by buying lower-cost ingredients for their products. The fast-food (and grocery) industry has done exactly the same, as far as using lower-quality ingredients.

    Less excitement for me.

Being a bit older, I have seen a lot come and go.

Used to look forward to the new collections – spring, summer, fall, holiday. Few brands seem to have them now. The influencers and exceedingly difficult and poorly stocked limited editions fly out of the websites and if you are very lucky, you might be able to physically purchase one in the store.

The gifts with purchase are not the same. I have bags from 20-30 years ago that still hold up, are actually practical and useful. These days they seem to be really cheap and some smell. Brands like Estée Lauder and Lancôme had pretty good gifts back in the day and you actually felt like a valued customer and it was a thank you from the company. These days, erm, not so much. I prefer a discount or points towards another purchase.

I do get excited about some holiday collections, or at least the idea of a collection of golds and silvers and jewel tones – for my fantasy life of having an event to go to. These days, it seems to be nudes or browns, and no thanks. I would be really excited about older brands like Chanel or Dior deep diving into the past and resurrecting and modernizing some older colours/palettes.

Fragrance comes and goes. I am looking for new ones and had a recent chat with a SA that a lot I wore and liked does not exist any more. I used to like a pretty bottle – almost like a work of art on my dresser. These days, many seem to be cheap, uninspiring plastic. Not fantastic.

I think we’re all there now. Things have changed so much! I used to love the color stories and until they were gone didn’t realize how much I enjoyed them 🙁 Holiday Collections are not what they used to be either. As for fragrance, that I still love. I love indie and niche brands that create interesting and unique fragrances : )
