The Worst Part About Having A Huge Makeup Collection Is…

I purchased this item and I receive a small commission if you shop using the links in this post.

Do you have a lot of makeup? What’s the worst part about having a huge collection of makeup? Do you struggle to store it all or have you simplified your makeup life since the pandemic? I wanna say I cut back a lot because I realized I was overconsuming way too much and simply not using the items I already had. Sure, I still buy makeup but not nearly the way I used to buy it. I refuse most PR as well because I feel like it can be wasteful. Rather than have a company send me shades I might not use I’ll purchase the one or perhaps two shades I will.

I still have A LOT of makeup. I can’t deny that. A lot of which is older and I just refer back to from time to time for the blog or just because I can easily admit some items I’m not willing to part with. At some point in my life I can see myself downsizing all of it but I haven’t yet reached that stage of my life yet. But I can tell you I come closer and closer to it daily. I’d like to live a life where I have one shade of coral blush I love, one pink blush, a handful of colorful eyeshadows, and a few silky mattes.

How about you? Do you have a huge makeup collection? If so, what the worst part of owning that collection? I can tell you my biggest issue.

So yes, I readily admit I have A LOT of makeup. I have an embarrassing amount of it which is all stored in my makeup room. Yeah, a room, filled with makeup. I hate even saying that out loud but when you’ve blogged nearly 18 years you accumulate a lot of stuff to say the least. Like most makeup hoarders, ahem, I mean makeup collectors I store my makeup in a variety of different storage options from Ikea like the popular Alex Drawers.

I’m a type A Personality and I need everything to be perfectly organized, clean, and tidy. This obviously extends to my makeup collection. I have everything organized to perfection BUT…! I still can’t find stuff when I need it LOL! Well, technically I can but sometimes I’ll wake up and think, “Oh I want to do a pink eye look today!” and suddenly, I can’t find the exact shade of pink I want to use or I’m overwhelmed by how many pink eyeshadows I have. It’s the worst part about having a huge makeup collection! I just can’t find what I need or I feel overwhelmed with the items I have. I dream of a day I can have like one pink eyeshadow and think to myself, hey, I want to do pink today and pull that single shade out and call it a day. No fuss, no endless options, no looking for that particular shade I love, no drama at all! Just a single shade, swipe, and go.

This my friends is part of the trial and tribulation of overconsumption and simply owning too much of something that I really don’t need unless it was part of my career as say a makeup artist which I am not. I’ll get older, I already am older, but one day I’ll get even more older and I can see myself just pulling out a few shades, storing them somewhere for daily use, and just letting the rest of my collection go. That day isn’t today, nor tomorrow, it might not even be in five years, but one day I’ll downsize.

Do you have a big makeup collection? What’s the worst part of owning a huge makeup collection? Do share!

About the Muse

Isabella MuseIsabella is just an average everyday geeky girl who doesn’t blend her eyeshadow correctly, wears too much blush, and hopes she never finds her holy grail products because she likes the thrill of the chase so much. Her mission is to bring you super honest reviews on makeup, skincare, fragrance and all things beauty. She’s in no way an expert on the topic and she sure as hell isn’t a super model. But she’s passionate about makeup and is seeking like-minded individuals that like pina coladas, getting caught in the rain, and ones that enjoy spending hundreds of dollars at Sephora without feeling buyer’s remorse. Yes…I am a makeup hoarder…I mean collector. I just love it all (blush, lipstick, eyeshadow). The last couple of years, I have really started to think about overconsumption. I like to read minimalism blogs and watch YouTube videos….but I have not been able to actually do it. I like the idea of owning less and actually using the things I have. Makeup is definitely my weak spot.

The worst part…is knowing that I wasted money on many of the products. How many times have I purchased a product and only used it a couple of times? I agree that owning a smaller collection would be ideal. How many blushes or lipsticks do I really need? I would also like to be able to wear less and have a quicker routine….but I almost always do a full face. I just really love makeup.

The best part…I enjoy your blog and reading your reviews. I enjoyed Christine from Temptalia. And Karen from Makeup & Beauty Blog. The three of you always make me feel understood. My family and co-workers do not have the same “addiction” to cosmetics and it’s nice to have a place that gets me.

Not sure when I will stop collecting, but for now I’m just trying to buy a little less and enjoy what I already have. Hope you are having fun on your trip!

hahahahahahhahaa it’s ok we’re all friends here we can call ourselves hoarders without judgement LOL! Same. It’s true that the older you get the wiser you become and overconsumption is something I think about a lot and I do try to limit myself. I’ll never be a complete minimalist. that’s not my personality but I do try and make better choices of what I do and don’t need! Same here. I oddly purchase something, I love it, I’ll use it a few times but something new comes around too quickly and I stop using the item I just purchased, used a few times, and loved. What a bad cycle to be caught in! I love makeup too and it brings me joy so don’t beat yourself over not owning one eyeshadow and one lipstick 😀 Aw thank you so so much! I truly appreciate you reading me! I realize blogs are a dinosaur but it brings me joy when someone says they enjoy the blog 🙂 and I’m so glad we can bond over makeup. Trust me, I understanding 😀 And likewise, my fam and friends like makeup but not on the level I do so coming here and speaking to people like you makes me feel so good. If I buy less and enjoy what I have I think I’ll be happy 😀 thanks!!!!!!! We’re in the UK currently and the weather has really improved which makes me so happy as I do so love it here especially when it isn’t doom and gloom and rain 😀

Yes, I do. It’s not as bad as it used to be, but it’s still a lot. I’m trying to get better about throwing things away that are past their prime or expired. I also pass things down to my tween. I am guilty of over consuming my favorite colors, and need to do a better job at using things up. I used to do a “10 Pan Challenge” before buying anything new.

    • Isabella Muse

I’m still at the “bad” stage as I have a hard time parting with anything because I like to refer back to it and also, I spent money on it so throwing it out (it’s used to can’t donate or too old to even use anymore) makes me feel rather bad. I end up storing it away and not using it anymore once it expires and it’s prob a bad habit but I chalk up that I might need to refer back to it one day because of the blog. BAD excuse but that’s my excuse LOL! I do the same. I’m weak for coral blushes and I must have every single one even if it looks exactly what I already have :-/

The worst part about having a large makeup collection is that I feel like I already have everything so I don’t let myself buy anything new. I miss getting something new and shiny that I don’t already have.

    • Isabella Muse

Absolutely! There are very few items that make me stand up and go, “I need this!” and that’s because I already have the new item they are launching it’s just in different packaging LOL!

  • Roberta

I have a decent size makeup collection, I have products I’m embarrassed to say I haven’t used. I don’t need anything, but when something new comes out I think I must have it, when I get a coupon code I can’t resist. I try to get rid of something when I buy something new but it doesn’t always work.

    • Isabella Muse

My best friend started doing that with the buy something but something must go method and I WISH I can say that it would work for me but I’m horrible with it. Sometimes I just get this urge to purge and that helps because I’ll clear out a bunch of stuff and donate it but lord knows it’s hard! Especially with sales or coupons!

Guilty guilty guilty on the over consumption of too much makeup. I have way too much. The biggest problem is I don’t get to use what I have. I’m tempted to clean out and of course I do. Although if it’s something I’ll use then I keep it. I have 3 grown girls so they are always ready to take things off my hands. Lol

    • Isabella Muse

Haha! Glad I’m not alone! Guilty as well! I donate a lot of my new items to a variety of orgs but since the pandemic a lot of them stopped taking items (even if they are new) which is so weird 🙁 Sometimes friends and family will take items off my hands as well but they aren’t as big a beauty lover as I am so I still have a lot! If you want to send you girls my way tell them they are so welcome hehe!

Long time lurker, first time commenter! I think a lot about overconsumption, probably daily. It started as a fun hobby back in 2013, and I just didn’t keep a pulse on the products that would pile up from subscription boxes or Sephora Favorites sets. I’d get new products and treat them as collector’s items – keeping them in their original packaging, never using them. The products in my Alex drawers are 95% unused.

I’ve been casually project panning just to get some use out of my makeup. The last time I used up a blush was almost 2 decades ago. I’ve never panned a highlighter or eyeshadow. I would like to get to a point where I’m not thinking, “I should put on makeup to get some use out of it.” My goal is to use makeup when I want to and not force myself to. At this point, I’m not interested in purging my collection, but I’m definitely VERY picky about adding to it.

I put myself on a low buy this year. A no buy was too restrictive, and would have been the psychological equivalent of banning certain foods from a diet. So far, I’ve bought one perfume (it was discontinued and briefly came back in stock) and some BBW items. They weren’t necessary purchases, but I find my perspective around the purchases is a lot healthier. It’s not a fanatical “OMG I’m so excited for my purchase WHEEEEE” but a more level headed sentiment of “I like these products, and I’m going to use them.” I think beauty marketing has brainwashed us into this manic state of needing to own their newest launch, so it feels good to take a step back and realize no product out there is actually life changing.

Hi Jo! Thanks for coming out to comment today! I totally understand this as I sort of think about it too especially when I’m in my closet picking out clothes or looking through makeup etc…It’s all a lot. I’ve scaled back a lot and try to use what I have. If you have a women’s shelter or even a girl’s org around you perhaps ask if you can donate. A lot of my new items went to several orgs pre-pandemic. I even used to donate a few things to Midnight Run (they are a little selective at certain locations). They are especially big on personal care items. I do use makeup daily but I’m not utilizing my entire stash and that makes me a little sad because you know you have too much when you’re not hitting pan. I scaled back myself but haven’t completely quick simply because beauty and makeup bring me so much joy. I just try to do it at a smarter level than I did in the past. I completely agree! It’s a lot of YOU NEED THIS but if you sit back, take a moment, and just think about it chances are you can decide not to buy it after asking yourself do I need it or do I just want it which is a big difference. Thanks for commenting Jo! I enjoyed your insight!

Yes, me too. Everything piling up and spilling over and me re-ordering something that I already have but couldn’t it find at the time; one million lipsticks, and another million lipsglosses,an insane array of concealers, and a dizzying amount of foundations, etc etc etc!! My New Years goal is to finally get organized thruout my house and life, and my makeup is the #1 priority! I’m 62 and I find myself going back to the same products that really work for my skin. Like Giorgio Armani: my favorite foundation is their Luminous Silk foundation. My other is MAC Studio Radiance. So I am hoping to just use those exclusively and start paring down. Having so much makeup is ridiculous and it causes me stress! And putting a moratorium on buying new products!! The only thing I do like to switch up every now and again is skincare products, but generally I have a routine with certain items and brands I really like but will occassionally try something different. Presently I’m using Medik8 stuff. I know that buying and applying makeup is an absolute joy for me! I just need to pare it down…lol

    • Isabella Muse

thankfully it’s not all piling up or spilling around me. I have it organized a bit too weirdly like Dexter OCD style organized LOL! But I still feel like it’s too much and I feel overwhelmed what I want to use and I’ll just revert to a simple eye look because I end up not finding what I want. I guess you could call it literal organized clutter LOL! Buying new makeup and just beauty in general brings me so much joy which makes it so hard to quit it completely but I do ask myself a few questions before I actually dive in. Do I have something like it? Do I really need this or just want it? etc..! In the end this helps me say no sometimes!

    Yup! Large beauty wardrobe…still. 😉

A few years back on the blog Specktra there were low/no buy threads at the start of each year. I can say for quite a few years participating in such a community made me more mindful and also accountable to those who were also participating.

That being said, in current times, I have ways to navigate my wardrobe, to not let it overwhelm me and get tooooo big. I immediately give away things I know I won’t use, have tempered buying too much of the same thing, make it a point to rotate what I am using and regularly dispose of past date and/or products that are not performing the way they should. I date products as they are opened (use a silver or black sharpie). This really really helps with disposing of things like mascara and skincare in a timely manner. Also, if I really want to buy something new, at least one thing needs to come out.

Overall, I am no longer a collector and have a stash that I am truly enjoying.

For me it’s skincare, my weakness.
I have cut back a lot of buying but there have been a couple of times where I have the ‘oh I forgot I bought that’ moment. That’s my sign that it’s time to purge.
With sensitive skin I end up wasting quite a bit as things will end up breaking me out too. So cutting back has helped save on wasted money, which is crucial in this economy.

    • Isabella Muse

oh my god come sit close to me and we’ll have a therapy sesh for this issue because girl me too. I started doing that the last year. Where I was buying something and legit had it. Senior moment! Now I really ask myself do I need this, do I have this, do I even like it? Skincare is def one of my weakness and perfume!
