Have You Ever Been Chastised at Sephora for Going Through the Drawers?

Ahhh, the forbidden drawers! We all know about them, but we’re not really supposed to open them! What forbidden treasure lay in those drawers that get snapped closed by a sales rep if you dare sneak a peek?

In all seriousness, sometimes you’ll walk into Sephora looking for something, but it isn’t there. The irony is that a sales associate isn’t around when you need them to see if the item might be available in those forbidden drawers. They’ll ask you one hundred times, “Can I help you?” when you first enter the store and follow you around the entire time you’re in the store. But when you finally do need something, they all disappear, and you can’t find anyone to help you! It’s fascinating how that happens to me ALL the damn time. That’s when the drawers beckon…! Sometimes, you just aren’t finding your shade or the product you want, and the drawer is just begging to be opened to see if it might be in there. Do you open it? Do you leave and decide you’ll order it online? Or do you try to find that sales associate who disappeared into the great Sephora vortex?

I’ve opened it once or twice, and this is how things went.

So, I’ve expressed how much I dislike aggressive sales associates. I think Bath and Body Works and Lush are probably the worst. They won’t leave you alone. Lush is worse than ever before. You can’t walk into that store and give a shower gel the side eye before you have an SA down your throat telling you every detail about it. And the “I’m good, thanks, but if I need anything, I’ll find you” doesn’t work with them. Nope, they aren’t taking that as an excuse. They’ll start recommending every item in the store to you while you’re just trying to relax and browse casually. I stopped going to Lush stores because of that (and because I was just grossed out by everyone sniffing and handling items and putting them back on the shelf for someone else to buy). I haven’t purchased anything in Lush for at least four years (maybe longer!) and don’t regret it.

Sephora sales reps aren’t nearly as bad, but they can be overwhelming if they think you’re about to whip out a big garbage bag and rob the store of all its inventory. Be for real right now, if I did decide to do that, we all know no one is going to do a damn thing to stop me. You got to love the society we live in right now, right?

But THE irony, as I said above, is you can’t find them when you need them. And that’s always when the item or shade you want isn’t on the shelf. So yes, I have helped myself a time or two from the drawers at the bottom of the displays. And hey, sometimes I get lucky, and the item is in there, and I don’t get caught. And sometimes, I don’t get lucky, and the item isn’t there, and I’m caught. What happens when you’re caught? It’s never a pretty situation! Or at least it hasn’t been for me. Seriously, don’t go in the drawers. They HATE when you go in the drawers. I’ve gotten some severe attitude the two times I’ve done it, and worse, the item I wanted wasn’t even in the drawer. So, I had to be chastised for doing it, plus not getting the item I needed anyway. It’s def embarrassing being sort of yelled at in the middle of a crowded store. The story’s moral is to wait for the SA or look for it or ask because they don’t want you in those drawers. I’m starting to think Sephora has some National Treasure hidden in there.

Have you ever been yelled at for going through the drawers? What happened? Do share your experience!

I’ve gone in the drawer a few times but it was years ago. I remember getting caught just once, but the associate wasn’t mean about it lol

    • Isabella Muse

I did it twice and was super embarrassed both times as I was sort of scolded for it and other customers were looking at me like OoooooooOooooo take her to the principals office! LOL! Third time is not the charm! If I don’t see it and I can’t find someone to help I walk out and buy it online LOL!

I stopped going to Sephora because of the associates constantly asking if I need something. There are so many of them and it’s constant. I’ve never personally gone through the drawers but I honestly didn’t occur to me that you weren’t supposed to. They aren’t locked. I feel like at other stores they have drawers you are free to go through (like Victoria’s Secret). If they don’t want people to open them, they should lock them.

    • Isabella Muse

I agree 100%. Locks should be a thing especially if they are trying to discourage theft. But some SAs REALLY dislike anyone going through the drawers! I’ve gotten talked to about it at least twice and I stopped doing it and just leave if I can’t find the item and order it online because when I need someone to look they aren’t around but when I’m browsing they are right up in my grill asking me if I need a basket, if I need help with that, if I want to know the price, etc..etc..etc..!

When I wanted to try the Tower28 mascara, the only Sephora that showed it in stock was Disney Springs near where my parents live. So I sent them in to get it, armed with the name and photo. They asked a person in the front and they said “nope, we don’t have it.” They walked around a little browsing and an older Seohora employee came up to them and said “Come with me.” She took them to the back area where perfumes are, unlocked a drawer and pulled one of the mascaras out. At this point my father says, how much does this cost, expecting it to be some crazy $100 mascara and when she said $20 bucks he couldn’t believe it. Ironically it did not work for me, but at least I tried it.

Oooooohhhh….the forbidden Sephora drawers. I was looking for something on one visit and the Sephora sales woman was right next to me. She must have been newer and I opened the drawer telling her the last time I was in I found what I wanted in the drawer. She just sat there. Another SA came up to me and aggressively asked me if I needed help. I told her I was checking in the drawer to see if the item I wanted was in there. I said the other SA was right there. She again asked me if I needed something and again I told her. Then she said that people are not allowed in the drawers because of theft! Now this Sephora is not exactly in the safest and best neighborhood. I wanted to tell her that my middle aged Asian self was not stealing anything and that there was another demographic she should maybe take note of. Instead I put everything down that I had intended to purchased, looked at her and the other SA and said “that’s it. I’m done.” and walked out of the store.

I promise it isn’t a race thing they pretty much harass anyone and anything even people dressed to the nines with an expensive bag and shoes. They’re just THAT aggressive. LOL! you basically got someone to quit because you went through the drawers???? LOL!!!!!!!

Lush is the WORST. One of the sales girls in the store on Government St in Victoria had the nerve to lecture me on tree conservation when I asked her if they still printed the sales flyers as I wanted one for my visually-impaired mother. Spoiler alert: I’m an environmental scientist with more years of experience than she has out of diapers!

    • Isabella Muse

LOL! Omg!!!! I haven’t had that happen but Lush has gotten oddly worse over the years! They used to be chill but I’d say the last ten years or so they are just full on in your face. It’s a very unpleasant shopping experience!

I went to the drawers at the Dior counter at Shoppers Beauty Boutique not too long ago. Picked up my item and took it to the counter.

I did have a chat with one sales associate at a smaller Sephora here about empty shelves. I thought it was maybe a shipping/stock issue or people wanting the same item I did and got to the store before me. To deter theft they apparently will only keep one lipstick or whatever on the shelf. I also noticed it when I wanted an Armani gloss – the boxes were empty. It is very frustrating because you either have someone following you around the store or no help at all.

    • Isabella Muse

exactly! Either I am overwhelmed by help but I can’t find anyone. And I get it, there’s SO much theft at the moment 🙁

  • Violet

Heehee, haven’t been caught yet! I also go thru the drawers at Bath & Body Works, but nobody seems to care there.

    • Isabella Muse

LOL! I never tried at BBW! Too many SAs buzzing around me so I always find what I need even stuff I don’t need as the pratically put stuff in my bag LOL!

  • Kimmwc03

I’ve never even thought to look in the drawers. Probably because they are so low to the floor in my stores that I felt like I wouldn’t be able to get back up with all of my stuff. 🙂

  • Roberta

I have gone through the drawers at Victoria’s Secret when they have their panty sale, they don’t seem to mind and it’s okay to do it.

    • Isabella Muse

I have too! VS isn’t too bad about it but Sephora I felt like I was about to be arrested lol!
