Urban Decay Lipstick Review

You have to be excited about this post.

Urban Decay hasn’t had lipstick for a very long time and now relaunches with 22 shades for Fall 2008. They went right ahead and did it big time baby!

I can’t begin to tell you how exciting it was getting four of these bad boys to test out and review for you. They are simply thee most gorgeous lippies around at the moment as far as the Muse is concerned!

Let’s focus on the awesome packaging first. Each shade of lipstick is housed in a large, heavy container with two-toned light and dark purple swirls decorating the outer lid with a goth mini dagger handle on top. The casing of the lipstick tube is a shiny metallic purple that contrasts beautifully with the swirly lid. If that wasn’t enough of a presentation Urban Decay went an extra mile and embedded each lipstick with Urban Decay and a tiny dagger. The entire packaging creates not only a posh feel to each lipstick but also holds an edge of dark and dangerous! Just how the Muse likes her lipstick! Dark, edgy, dangerous, and most importantly posh!

Now I read a review recently that said the formula was horribly gritty due to the mass amount of glitter in the lipstick and that’s not completely true. Depending on the color you choose the amount of glitter may be more or less! It also deserves to be mentioned that even if the color is overdosing on heavy shimmer and glitter the texture was in no way gritty. I felt like each color I tried had a wonderfully moisturizing, melty formula that simply glided onto my lips leaving behind beautifully pigmented popping color!

I’m completely serious when I say I want every single color for my very own (After all I do own every single shadow Urban Decay has put out thus far)! Go ahead and try to stop me from buying all these for my collection! I’m completely in lust and love with these.

Strangely enough I have also read that the lipsticks had an overpowering smell and taste but I didn’t notice either. I did notice a tiny faint perfumed cherry taste to some of the colors where as others had no taste at all.

The shades I tried out were 5150, Voodoo, Gravity, and Hotpants. Out of those four I wasn’t loving Hotpants. Hotpants is a heavy duty frost and I just couldn’t love it since it made my face look full and very round (as if it isn’t all those things already right? yak!).

The other three shades fit me perfectly and were very deep and perfect for fall! 5150 was my favorite. It’s advertised as a coral but I felt like it was a cherry shade! It looks beautiful paired up with pink shadow!

The other two shades that completely captured my heart were Voodoo and Gravity both of which were really deep shades that are completely flattering for the Fall. Voodoo is a deep, dark pink that almost looks maroon where as Gravity is a rich red.

Here are some swatches of each shade! As you can see 5150 does look kinda Coral like in my swatch however it comes out very cherry red on my lips!

Here are some pictures of a MAC lipstick side by side with the new Urban Decay lipstick! You can’t tell all that much but the Urban Decay dwarfs the MAC lipstick! It’s alot heavier as well due to the posh packaging of the Urban Decay lipsticks!

I’m slapping the coveted Muse Approval on these new lipsticks from Urban Decay! They sport beautiful packaging, a gorgeous pigmented, moisturizing formula, and just that little goth dagger alone makes it worth a purchase!

The Muse likes ‘em! You need these. Go now get some! Urban Decay Lipsticks are on sale at both Urban Decay and Sephora! Have a lookiee at the 22 shades and tell me which you are loving, liking, lemming!

Wow, the packaging is funky. Is there a sword at the top? I think you look great with Gravity.

Critty August 15, 2008 at 10:07 am

Oooo Critty wants!! You look gorg in all four shades – I wish I had your lips!! Right now lusting after Apocalypse but I may have to be checking out Voodoo, 5150 and gravity too! Swooooooon, I heart UD.

hi muse!
the packaging is so cute! but i think i would break the dagger in an instant. i have a tendency to drop some of my cosmetics. one of my single MJ shadows turned into a piggy. i like the detail on the actual lipstick, it reminds me of the anna sui lippies.
anywho…hope you have a nice weekend! i know i will..finally a weekend with no rain and 25C weather woot!

hello millie!

Agreed :) I love it! No it’s pretty firmly on there so it won’t be breaking off ;)

I dropped this on my titled bathroom floor and it’s still perfect :)

I’m notorious for dropping cosmetics as I am always in a rush :)

I felt the same way and even though that hotpants reminded me of a color from AS I used to have!

You have a wonderful weekend too! Sounds like it’s going to be a lovely one :)

Enjoy!

Thanks for this post! I was very curious about these and you make them sound even more promising. IŽll have to wait til the end of November though, to see them in person. But then no NYC Sephora is safe from me… :)

Meredith August 15, 2008 at 11:13 am

I just bought Gash last night and LOVE it. I’m a huge Urban Decay fan anyway, so I was so excited to see them add lippies to their line.

Reply

the Muse August 15, 2008 at 11:26 am

hiya nell!

my pleasure! I am so so in love with ‘em! I know a few reviews are kinda ranting at ‘em for taste and texture but I experienced no such problems…it’s lust for me. Pigmented, gorgeous, simply awesome!

LOL! How long are you over for?! ;) Maybe we should meet up for shopping frenzy!

Reply

the Muse August 15, 2008 at 11:40 am

hello meredith!

FANTASTIC! :) I want Gash badly ahhhh!
I am too! It’s so nice to see UD back in fighting form! They were absent for a while but back in full force!

hiya dd!

Ditto :) are you indulging?!

Reply

Decorative Diva August 15, 2008 at 12:51 pm

I’ll be going to check it out in person on the 21st, when I check out MAC Cult of Cherry. Depending on what looks best, I may or may not indulge :)

But I really need a good vampy lip color!

Reply

sarahPUFFY August 15, 2008 at 1:07 pm

mrr, bella sugar’s review said the same thing – that it was gritty and smelled horrible. some women take what she says a little too seriously though, and won’t buy a product she gives a negative review on. I wonder if they end up missing out on something they may like. it makes me sad, until I realize, “wait…more for me!”

I really want to try Jailbait and Rush [nude and neutral pink], though.I’ve been wanting some neutral lippies for fall!

Reply

Rocketqueen August 15, 2008 at 1:11 pm

Gorgeous little toilet brushes lol! Sorry UD, I actually love the style! I want… ALL! The Muse made me do it!

Reply

Tammy August 15, 2008 at 1:40 pm

Oh Musey!!! I MUST have Voodoo! I have never used UD before, but that color is GAWJUS!
It goes on my wishlist…Dang, when I hit Orlando and their Sephora, I am going to need a shopping cart!

Yay! Can’t wait! I have the cult of cherry and will be reviewing soon :) I have one palette and some lip stuff :)

There are TONS of vampy shades in this collection :)

hi sarah!

well it’s understandable I think as she’s very popular :) or they I think it’s several people right?

LOL! Exactly more for me ;)

Honestly these were so pigmented and gorgeous that a little bad taste couldn’t put me off especially since I HATE the way mac lippies taste and still use ‘em anyway!

I was thinking of doing more nude and natural for fall too but I never pull it off as well as I do the outrageous shades ;)

Hi Izzy, the packaging is so cute! The dagger is there to “nail” our hearts on this eh?

Anyway, are u sporting the Jelly Pong Pong Dany Doll Concealor? It really looks a tad too light on u.

I love the lippies btw. They are lovely! Hot Pants look lovely though. 5150 looks very Christina Aguilera-ish. Haha..if u know what I mean..

Have a great weekend ahead! :)

gracie :)

Hiya Muse!!!

OMG long time no posting..I’ve been catching up on all your articles you wrote while I was away lol.

I love, LOVE Urban Decay’s new lipsticks…so much smoother then their old formula. I bought Gash for old times stake and it is a beautiful shade of red….will be getting Apocalypse and Voodoo next. XD

And yes, the packaging is to die for.

Hope you have had a great couple weeks. XD

Cult of Cherry, Jampacked
Kirsch, Bing
and maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaybe the Spiced Chocolate Quad.

I love Urban Decay!! Thanks for such a great review. I bought Rush last week and it is amazing. It does not have any glitter and I did not think that it had a strong smell or taste either. It is literately the best lipstick I have every used. I really prefer gloss over lipstick but these are amazing. I am definitely going to pick up some more of these based on your swatches. I love your site!!

Reply

loey August 15, 2008 at 6:41 pm

For a moment I thought the outer packaging with the thingy sticking out on top is the lipstick. That would make it such a hazard in makeup bags (slicing the makeup bag apart!)
Cute packaging, tiny lipstick, like the Japanese ones! :D

i’m so glad you did a review on these, i’ve been wanting to try it since i spotted it on the sephora catalog. the packaging is super cute.

I envy you and others who live in the land of everything-is-available-cheap-and-fast. most of the time I can only droll over things you review lolz…Im in jakarta and I dont want to do online transaction in this country :P anyway, the packaging is so nice I (wish I) could buy it just for the sake of it! :D
plus..i dont think hotpant looks ugly on you…I love the color (and your pretty pendant)!!

Musey! arghh i tried emailing to musings.of.a.muse@gmail.com but it didn’t get through i think! Is this the correct email add?

A bit OT but i’m really desperate for an eyeshadow primer, and we don’t have ud here, i read that mac paintpots, clinique’s cream shadows and bobbi’s long wear cream eyeshadow can be used as primers?Any gd brands to recc (that we should have TAT) thanks so much!

Oh sry musey i would like to ask, for creamy lipsticks like mac's lustres, what kind of prep should i use so that the lipstick doesn't seep into my liplines? I have 2 and 3N from the N collection, they're gorgeously pale but i have trouble blend on lips >< any advice?

hi melissa!

Me too! :) You’re most welcome!!! It’s my pleasure!

I think a majority of ‘em don’t but one or two shades do sport glitter here and there!

Me either. I read a few rants about the taste but honestly mac tastes way worst :P

I have to say it’s probably one of the better formulas I’ve used too. it’s very moist and creamy feels like no need for a follow up with gloss after :)

Thanks Melissa :) I’m so glad you’re enjoying my little blog :)

Many thanks for the comment and hope to speak to you again soon!

hi loey.

It’s a delicate little dagger. I’ve stashed it in my clear case with no probs so far phew!

No they are full size that’s why I compared them to the mac lipsticks to show they are larger. Definitely not tiny :)

Hmm weird. Try again should work?

copy this to be safe musings.of.a.muse@gmail.com

I’ve never tried bb or clinique but I love UDPP it’s my holy grail. And although I’m not a big big PP fan I do admit that they adhere eyeshadow amazingly well and less fall out too when I use ‘em!

Hope this helps :)

Reply

the Muse August 18, 2008 at 7:53 am

hey again helena :)

Hmm I don’t wear nudes so sadly I’m unsure. The way I prep is using a lip scrub to get my lips nice and smooth, after that I apply a balm, than my lippie, than a gloss :)

let me know if this helps!

Hugs!
