Smashbox O-Gloss Noir Review and Swatches

Ok, I think I’m finally out of denial. I’m come to the conclusion I can’t do plummy, black gothy lips. Fresh Sugar Plum Tinted Lip Treatment proved it to me, and Bobbi Brown Black Velvet is busy taking me down and telling me how I so can’t do the vampy lip look, and now Smashbox O-Gloss Noir may be proving that this Fall trend is just not for the likes of Muse’s like me.

Jump!

Smashbox’s newest gloss that promises to transform into your perfect berry hue. Changing to a berry shade that is uniquely to you.

So if you’re olive skin or a bit darker you might see the joy in this but honestly I personally felt it was a fail.

First off, I’m not a big fan of Smashbox O-Gloss’s formula to begin with. I have the original and I wish it was more emollient, more shiny, and just overall more glossy. Smashbox Noir pretty much picks up in the same formula position here, nothing has changed in regards to how shiny the gloss is, simply put it’s just a revamped version of O-Gloss in a plum berry shade.

It swatches near black but at closer glance you’ll see it’s somewhat a grape purple shade. On my lips? About the same thing…I was hopeful for a burst of warm berry not plum, not purple, not grape but something along the lines of a very ripe cherry but this is not the case. On my lips it looks blackish grape and after a few minutes begins to turn a tad dark plum….not particularly flattering in the least for me.

  • Olive skin tones or darker who want a vampy lip look!
  • Anyone who wears a vampy, gothy lip look well!
  • Anyone wanting a warmer, richer shade of color for Fall lips!

  • Anyone expecting a berry shade (this is not berry it is however along the lines of purple, think plums or grapes).
  • Anyone expecting it to change to “your perfect shade” (it does not in my opinion).

Sadly, this is an utter disappointment for me but that’s only my personal opinion as I can picture a dozen other people who will like it very much. Fairer skin types may wish to avoid it as you’ll look a tad deathly (rigamortis setting in) with plum lips but again that’s only my opinion. It’s debatable whether it’s something you absolutely need, I personally can think of a million other lip products for Fall that are way prettier, however, as I mentioned some people will fall for this head over heels.

Personally, no likey.

Def snapped me into reality about how I so can’t do the entire vampy lip thing!

Damn.

Better luck next time for me!

  • Kristina

That’s crazy how dark it is on you! I’m super fair and this turns a sheer berry on me. This version is actually more subtle and pretty than the original (which turned a horrid fuschia) one me. I guess the whole body chemistry thing isn’t complete phooey!

    • the Muse

you have to be the luckiest girl in the world Kristina b/c it went crazy black on me. I def heard the fuchsia horror stories 😛 LOL obviously not if you got a nice berry shade from it….!

  • Resham

Nope, this didn’t look good on me aswell. I am pretty Olive toned…Sad though, coz it was something cool that I wished had worked!

M still waiting to read your thots on Softlights quad from same collection….:)

    • the Muse

resham PHEW thought I was crazy as I am hear mad raves. It’s so dark!? more blackberry than anything else…! oh yes I’m getting to it 😀 promise!

I actually tried this stuff at sephora and really liked it! its a nice sheer plummy color on my lips and perfect for fall. however, my lips are very pigmented to begin with, so it wasn’t so drastic on me :).

  • Lenna

I am pretty curious about this (and the original, less plumtastic version)…I may have to try the other one first. Dark shades make me look a bit too gothy. ;p

  • Shannon

I highly doubt I’ll be buying this. I brought the ogloss and after about three months it stopped working. I could have gotten better gloss for that price.

hummm – I am a dark lip vampy kind of girl some days. The first o-gloss is okeydokey. I like pinky pink -anything. I guess I have two gloss personalities. Dark and vampy and pink and girlie. Ha. Interpersonal revelation through lip gloss. Guess i need to add it to my Sephora list. How long is your VIB code good for?

I must be the weirdest person in the world- the Smashbox O-Glosses do NOTHING on me- they turn clear…. I just sent back Noir because after 10 seconds it faded and looked like I had on clear gloss…. no color change at all!

The Too Faced Mood Swings do great on me- I have them all and love them- but for some reason O-Gloss and Avon’s version are a bust on me.

    • the Muse

ha sasha 😀 It didn’t really turn on me either but def didn’t remain clear that’s for sure 😀

  • telle

i definitely want to try it out and see how it looks on my lips! thanks Muse! 🙂

Wow, I’m always brushing this gloss along w the original off, but after my experience w Fresh Plum Sugar, I may actually try this out since you’re saying it actually showed up pretty dark. I wanted more darkness w the Fresh Plum. Maybe you could try out a lipstick, UD’s Vinyl is really quite awesome, I feel. It’s got microsparkles in a plum/violettie type of color so it allows you to walk that line between goth & Fall darker lip trends. The shimmers never let it look flat & give it dimension. You can start out as light then get darker w each swipe as you like or (get used to.) Vinyl is truly one of my favorite shades of all the UD lipsticks. It actually helped me transition into not only wearing lipstick again, but wearing darker colors for Fall that first Fall that came around after UD released all their new lipsticks. I hadn’t yet tried Apocalypse yet, feeling it appeared too dark in swatches & catalog photos, plus I’d get alot of compliments wearing Vinyl so I stuck w it:) Later, I tried out both Apocalypse & Confession (also Oil Slick which I STILL LOVE & always will!) and realized I felt more comfortable wearing dark lips again. I like Confession better than Apocalypse. I’m fair also, but I guess it really will just come down to what you’re comfortable wearing. I like Confession’s color better because it seems “cooler” w more of a blue/purple/red tint while Apocalypse has more of a “warm” yellow/brownish-berry/red. Since I dye my hair black ( and usually have crazy shades of pink&purple throughout, maybe I can just get away w more “craziness”) I feel Confession looks better while Apocalypse would be nicer on brunettes w some red/warmer tones in their hair. Just my opinion, here! I still wear Apocalypse, though, if I happen to be wearing something w red in it or a red tank under a black or charcoal hoodie, I think it pulls the look together better. My issue w wearing dark lips again (I did in HS very often, but that was so long ago) was what to do about my eye makeup since I’m normally all about a nice eye look. I played around w a cat-eye swoop in different, surprising shades that played off the shades in the dark lipsticks. I still think a nice Lavender or Iris ( “Iris Eyes” MAC Fluidline discontinued :'( boohoo why??!!) cateye w Confession, Vinyl, or Oil Slick is super hot & easy! I’ve found that always using Lip Fusion XL before these dark colors makes them look better & the whole effect more pretty. Maybe you could play around w the different plumpers like Lip Venom or Lip Injection & see what effect they would have on the color. That box alone is really pretty looking, Muse, why must you add more to my greedy cosmetic wish list? 🙂 And I’d already firmly made up my mind too! Thanks for showing us swatches! BTW, I got my moniter color issue fixed so I won’t go wrong w things I can only see here, thanks again!

This did absolutely nothing for me. It sat there on my lips and never changed color – no different than any other generic lip gloss. The original O gloss does turn a nice shade of light pink on me, so I’m not sure why this one refuses to do so!

  • Ozma

I just ordered this from Sephora, and I really hope it works. If it doesn’t, can I return it to a Sephora store?

  • Bunny Masseuse

I bought it, also NOT happy with it… sadly I bought 2x the SB “test lab” kit just to get the O-gloss in there (that has YET to be finalized as a regular line item 🙁 so sad…), the gloss in that kit was the only one of the o-glosses that rocked on me!

  • Laure

Tried the tester, loved it, bought it immediately. I’m a very, very pale girl and it looks gorgeous on me.

But, honestly, Im a dark colour person and would have wiped it off without a second thought if it was a pink. Yuck. Pink.

    Plum is definitely a win.

  • Laure

    *BUT*

Today I layered it over Smashbox Artificial light flash, which is a pink duochrome luminizing lotion which i usually use on my eyes to brighten them under my eye base (Im not sure if you can purchase it anymore, but I’ve seen a few different products with the same purple-pink glow). With gloss noir over it, the colour was a pretty pink reminiscent of Mac lustreglass in Flusterose.

Try it over other lip products. I’m getting some pretty awesome effects.
