Maybelline Super Stay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick ($7.59) arrives with the Maybelline Summer 2017 in an array of long-wearing shades. This formula promises to provide 16 hours of continuous wear with a matte finish.

I’m honestly not a fan of long-wearing lip products and Maybelline Super Stay Matte Ink’s formula is one of the reason I dislike them so much. This stuff is the devil’s work!

Maybelline Super Stay Matte Ink comes your way in an array of bold shades that are housed in a square barrel that holds 0.17 oz of product and has a flocked sponge applicator for application. I’ve seen prices range from around $8 bucks to $10 depending where you buy it.

These have a sweet vanilla fragrance and flavor that I found pleasant enough but deserves mentioning for sensitive users. The texture is thick, creamy, and spreads and applies easily enough on my drier lips with a smooth, even finish that wasn’t patchy. I had absolutely no problems with the color looking dry or even falling into my natural lip lines. The color I choose was extremely pigmented and I have no doubt all the other shades are as well. A single passed yielded beautiful opaque color.

Maybelline Super Stay Matte Ink Swatches (Voyager)

If you like long-wearing lip products you might potentially dig this formula but the market is so saturated with lip products like this already I think you can do a lot better. Why? Because although long wearing, once it sets this stuff is not going anywhere, it has a very odd set that’s very tacky and gross feeling on my lips. I literally felt like it was gluing my lips together! The tackiness is rather off putting not to mention the formula is very heavy. This isn’t a lightweight formula that you put on and forget. This stuff makes itself known, it’s very heavy on my lips and I felt like it was drying them out through the wear.

There’s no doubt they are going to last you all day but the tackiness feels awful. It’s odd because I watched a collaboration video on youTube for these very early in May and not once did the guru mention the tacky issue. I feel like I’m alone experiencing the odd stickiness that happens minutes after application.

One thing to note is you do need an oil-based remover of some sort to get the lipstick off at the end of the night or Maybelline Super Stay Eraser Lip Color Remover actually does a good job of it as well!

Needless to say, this is why I avoid long-wearing lipsticks! This formula is just too suffocating with a tacky set that wasn’t comfortable to me in the least. Props for pigmentation, easy application, and excellent long wear but big nay for the heavy tacky set.

Maybelline Super Stay Matte Ink is available now at ulta.com, amazon.com, and should be at drugstores soon.

Does it leave a stain if you apply it then wipe it off after a few minutes?

    • Isabella Muse

Mmm not really. If you use the Eraser to remove it you’ll get a bit of a stain but if you use micellar water it’s doesn’t leave much of a stain behind. As for just wiping it off with a tissue after a few minutes, that’s a no go. It sets within seconds and won’t budget without some sort of remover’s help!

There is no such thing as a “long-lasting” lipstick for me, but I’m sure I’ll try it and throw it in the drawer with the hundreds of other discards. I am always on the hunt for the perfect cinnamon roll and a long-lasting lipstick. Long-lasting to me would be 4 full hours, so these 8, 16, 24 hour claims are all a joke. :-/
The color DOES look good on you though!

    • Isabella Muse

thanks JY! Honestly, this would probably last through the zombie plague! Once it is on, IT IS ON! bulletproof 😀 but it feels a bit too tacky and heavy! Not comfortable in the least :-/ As for the perfect cinnamon roll, that I can help you with if you’re in NY!

    • Jennifer

Have you tried LipSense? I hope I’m not disrespecting the Blogger by mentioning it, but if you want long lasting without drying out your lips, it’s the best I have ever tried. I checked out the blog and didn’t see a review but maybe Isabella would do a review for it?

  • JY

Ohhhh, that sounds awesome!! I will let you know my thoughts on the lipstick, though it doesn’t sound so great. However, I’m desperate!

    • Isabella Muse

My pleasure! There are a lot of different options lately for long wearing lipsticks!

    • TwirlyGirly

JY, I feel your pain. I, too, have an entire drawer full of discarded lip products – from drugstore to high end – I can’t wear because they simply don’t stay on. I’m convinced I have some kind of super lipstick-dissolving chemical in my saliva that breaks down even the most industrial-strength long-wearing lipsticks on the market. However, I recently discovered Make Up For Ever Aqua Seal, and have had success using it on long-wearing lip products. My experimentation has proved it works best on lip products that dry down completely (not so much those that remain tacky, as Ms. Muse describes THIS lip product). I first apply the lip product as usual, then before it dries down, I take a flat, nylon concealer brush, add one drop of MUFE Aqua Seal, and brush it all over my lips, mixing the Aqua Seal with the lip product. Once dry, my lip product doesn’t budge for HOURS. I no longer get what I call “doughnut mouth” – a round circle of bare lips in the middle, surrounded by lipstick (which looks HORRIBLE). I’ve had the most success using this with the Kat von D long-lasting liquid lip products. HTH!

      • JY

TwirlyGirly, OMG, I’ve never heard of that but you better believe I’ll be at Sephora getting sone and pulling out my Kat Von D discards!! THANK you for the tip. Ppl are always telling me, “oh you need to try X.” I usually have. I had my lips tattooed last year and IT didn’t hold!! I’ve even resorted to a Sharpie!! If i could get 4 solid hours, I’d be thrilled. I want to put it on before work, then again at lunch and that’s it. Seems so simple yet I’m so glad to know I’m not suffering alone! 😉

        • TwirlyGirly

I hope this works as well for you as it does for me. It was hard for me to plop down 21.00 for such a tiny bottle of product, but then I thought if it makes it possible for me to wear at least a few of the dozens of lip products I’ve tossed aside it’s well worth it. I love wearing makeup, but I HATE having to constantly touch up/reapply anything, which is why I gave up on wearing lip stuff long ago (gave up, but still kept trying different brands/formulas – hope springs eternal and all that!) Good luck!

  • Brit

Thank you! This stuff is the actual worst. I’m not sure I’ve ever tried a lip product I liked less. Into the trash it went.

  • Krista

I LOVE this! I have lover and the color is divine. I have no issue with tackiness. On my lips, it dries in a few minutes. It stays on through eating and drinking too! I find it the most comfortable matte liquid lipstick I have, even better than the KVD everlasting formula. Of course, nothing is right for everyone. For me, it’s a great product.

    • Hayley

      I know I’m
Months behind commenting, but I’ve had the same luck with Lover: it’s the only color I’ve tried from the matte ink line, but after the tackiness subsides it gets real light and stays put. Maybe lover has a slightly different formulation. Love your honest reviews Muse!

      • Isabella Muse

aw thanks Hayley! Could be formula varies from color to color! Not unheard of ;-D

  • EBRU ÜNAL

Yes, I totally agree with you about the stickiness, and I got the shade “dreamer” (a near baby pink) and the application of that shade was streaky as well.
It is very drying, clinging the small dry patches on the lips.
I’ve bought it today and it is in the trash bin as of now.
I don’t like long-lasting lipsticks either but, L’oreal and Rimmel non-transfer / non-lasting lipsticks are far far better than this one.

    • Isabella Muse

Yeah 🙁 I had the same experience. It’s just not worth the uncomfortable feel on my lips. Mine is in the makeup graveyard waiting to be tossed!

  • Leah

I’ve tried Stilla, KVD, Smashbox and every other long wear liquid lipstick and none hold a candle to MAC’s discontinued Pro Long Wear Lip Colour. I’ve probably spent close to $300 trying everything on the market and no lipstick has properly lasted through lunch. I was OVERJOYED last week to discover this Maybelline lip colour. Yes it’s tacky but put a little gloss over it and o-m-g – it looks as beautiful at 9PM as it does at 7AM when I first put it on. And no tackiness issues. I really hope they keep these in their lineup as I’m over the moon with them. Did I mention I love the colours too?

    • JY

Leah, Your comment gave me hope because I am the exact same way!! I easily have 150+ lipsticks, stains, glosses and inks. “Long-wearing” to me would be 4+ solid hours. From the time I leave the house in the morning at 8, until lunch at 12:30. I EXPECT to have to reapply after lunch and that’s fine. But no matter the formula, or the primer, or the promises (6, 8, 12, 24! hour wear), I never got more than 2 hours. I even had my lips tattooed and they didn’t hold the ink!!
I had kinda discarded the idea of trying this product and instead bought the new NARS lip stain which was ‘ehhh.’ However, that sucker is being returned and I will be grabbing the only 3 colors of the Maybelline Lip Ink that are flattering! I put it on this morning at 8 like always, and at 1:30 it was still there!! I was THRILLED!! I didn’t have to reapply after a lunch with oil dressing, but again, I was okay with that. Now I just hope they’ll release some more, not-so-electric (or so vampy) shades. I didn’t think the tackiness was that bad, but like you, I put lip gloss on top because I don’t like a matte feel anyway. Cheers!

  • Aisha

That is some drawback. These haven’t launched in my country yet! But I love the sound of these and wanna try soon. The shades look pretty chic on you!

  • Kate

I have this in the lightest shade and agree 100%. It feels SO dry and sticky and gross, I only tap a small amount on with my finger which helps, but I miss out on the full product benefit.
I was also surprised no gurus mentioned these points, I suspect because of sponsorship or getting the products free.

    • Isabella Muse

it really is awful tacky and sticky ;( If you put a little clear gloss on top it helps a lot but defeats the purpose of the matte finish le sigh! aw 🙁 Let’s hope not!

  • Maggie

Omg thank you for this review! I had planned on getting this to last thru a wedding I’m attending. I went online to look at swatches and came across your review. All the youtubers raved about this stuff and said nothing about tacky. I hate tacky!

    • Isabella Muse

Hi Maggie! Glad you ran across my review! I hope it helps. I find it very tacky 🙁 It wasn’t a comfortable feeling for me sadly :-/

    • Leah

I wait for this lipstick to dry (1-2 minutes) and put some “Oh My Gloss! clear lipgloss from Rimmel on top and it’s set for the day, only reapplying after I eat. The colour stays put and no tacky feeling. Y’all need to give this product another try. I’m seriously in love!

  • Maria

So really late comment as I was here checking on another product and saw your review. I love this product and have a ton of different shades, the trick around the stickiness when it dries is lip balm! It HAS to be balm, as every gloss I’ve tried to layer over this has made it melt, but the Chapstick and EOS balms that I’ve layered over it have eliminated any dryness, gotten rid of the tacky feeling, and helped it last longer. I’ve literally worn one of these colors for days because it lasts so well through EVERYTHING! Maybe give that a shot if you feel like giving this product a second chance.
