Besame Brightening Vanilla Face Powder

I am in love with Besame Brightening Vanilla Face Powder and Besame French Vanilla Face Powder ($22) today! Recently, I was at Sephora at the check out going through the mile long area of bins that they put by the registers as you wait in line. You know, the makeup incentive bins that make you buy stuff you don’t need. To my surprise, inside one of the bins, was Besame Brightening Vanilla Face Powder.

Now I had tried Besame in the past, it’s kinda an old Hollywood indie brand that not a ton of people know about (they have great products by the very way) But I had never tried their powders so imagine my delight upon trying out the sample and realizing what a great dupe it would make for my beloved and much gone Skin Food Salmon Dark Circle Powder.

Take a look!

Besame Brightening Face Powder comes in two permanent shade selections of Violet and Vanilla as well as a limited edition French Vanilla shade. Vanilla is a good pick for fair skin with French Vanilla being best for medium and tanned complexions. Vanilla is a lighter yellow and French Vanilla is a buttery yellow (you can’t tell the difference in my swatches BUT you can see the difference on your face in my opinion).

I think the thing I like about this powder is the fact it feels like a powder. It does contain silica but it has a more traditional finely milled powder feel which is why it reminds me a little bit of Skin Food Salmon Dark Circle Powder. I would say it’s a bit thicker than the NYX Color Correcting Powders and Ben Nye Banana Powder both of which are thinner and have that sort of slippery silica texture.

This work great on your face. They have a smooth, silky texture that sets makeup to a matte finish which absorbs shine and brightens up your entire complexion. They do not adhere to drier areas, do not look powdery, and have a natural, soft, smooth finish. Love, love, love the consistency and texture!

But the real joy is how they play so well with concealer. French Vanilla is my favorite as this is a perfect shade for setting my concealer (Vanilla is just as good but I like French Vanilla a little more as it’s more yellow and better at diffusing dark circles)! It not only sets my concealer but brightens up my entire eye area without looking unnatural. So if you’re using flash photograph, there’s no flash back that’s glaring obvious! It just looks natural.

Did I mention the cute packaging? This is a plastic compact with a dual lid. Unscrew the top and you’ll find a puff located on top, there’s a flip top secondary lid that opens to reveal the sifter for the powder under this. It’s fab that the puff is separate from the powder, the double lid really helps keeps things from getting messy! Did I also mention this has a lovely light vanilla fragrance?

Nothing bad here to say! Besame Brightening Powder is a must have especially for setting concealer! I really like the consistency of this powder! It’s not your typical silica powder and has a thicker more luxurious texture that really brightens up a look yet remains very natural on skin!

A must have!

So how do the two vanillas compare to the violet powder? Does the violet work well with the concealer too?

    • Isabella Muse

I don’t know I have tried the violet one, I just have the two vanilla shades.

      • Rainey

Ahh okay well thanks, I just went and purchased it! I needed an excuse to drop Sephora’s Flash Shipping into my cart anyway!

    • Janessa

I have the violet and use it to set my under eye and I love it. I was hoping they would have a face powder to try! Thanks for the review!!

And the violet doesn’t smell like violet, but totally worth giving it a try

    • Isabella Muse

my pleasure mary! do add it to the top of your list it’s fab stuff!

  • Len

If it rivals your beloved Skin Food Powder I just HAVE to try this!
I was planning on trying the NYX powders you reviewed but by the time I find them in store… I can get these in 2 days HAHA. Thank you so much for getting both and describing the difference. I added both of these to my Loves List on Sephora and I just had no clue what the difference was they should add your shade descriptions to the products. Now to decide which to get! I use the new Maybelline light shade concealer under eyes… Which shade do you recommend? Thanks in advance.

    • Isabella Muse

hi len! EXACTLY! NYX takes forever to ship and still not seeing these in store yet. I would suggest Vanilla for you if you use the light concealer. What’s your skin tone? French Vanilla is a bit better for darker skin tones but it’ll work on light medium just as well (I’m light medium and it works great).

      • Len

I am medium for sure but my foundation AND concealer can oxidize on my face so I tend to go a bit lighter for that reason. I have darkness under my eyes though so too light can make me look BAD too! UGH the struggle haha! Im letting you know this is getting ordered today. I just have to have it! Tuesday can not come soon enough. Thanks again

        • Isabella Muse

haha len! I know that impatient feel. Mmm you wanna go with the buttery yellow of French Vanilla in that case, it works better with diffusing darkness imho!

  • Kimmwc03

I have the violet one and love how it brighten my face. It is scented (not sure what a violet smells like exactly). I guess I’ll pick up the vanilla one the next time I place a Sephora order. Thanks for the review.

  • Kirsten

I just ordered this last night! I’m so glad you like it…now I’m excited to get it! 🙂 And for the violet inquiries, according to the website it’s more for a matte and porcelain finish, where as the vanilla helps with redness and darkness. 🙂

  • Brian

French Vanilla says limited edition on the website.. I know what I am buying from Sephora the next time I am shopping! Thanks for the review and have a great weekend!

    • Isabella Muse

my pleasure, yeah, that totally screwed with my head, hate it being LE now I have to stock up! Hope you had a great weekend Brian!

  • Lacy

Ohh if this rivals your skin food then I MUST TRY THIS… i am fair skinned so i’ll assume I should just stick with the vanilla… but maybe the french vanilla for the yellow to help counteract dark circles?

  • Anna Fantasia

You’ve done it again Muse! Tempted me until I lost all will-power… so I was curious and ordered the violet from Sephora. I hope that it is as nice as the vanilla’s. 😉

  • laine

Muse, have you tried their lipsticks? I’ve been uber curious since I found out that it’s the same lipstick Agent Carter wears. It’s a beautiful day when my geek loves collide with my makeup loves.

    • Isabella Muse

oh yea I saw they did a tie in with Agent Carter, totally made my geeky good nature squee! 🙂 I have, but haven’t reviewed, I’ll see about reviewing them laine 😀

      • Laura

Their lipsticks are fab in my opinion. The Red Velvet that Agent Carter wears is like iron on me; I swear it made it out of a ramen dinner nearly 100% still intact.

  • Jes

My pal that works at Sephora gave this to me (in vanilla) for my bday. I have the violet, which very good at correcting sallow skin. I too have tried to find a replacement for the Skinfood concealer powder, and when I opened this, I knew it had possibilities. I was going to send you a message to let you know, as if I had to…I love the vanilla, but now that I know the french vanilla is more yellow, I will definitely pick it up. Thanks Muse!

  • Jessica

Hi muse! im still debating over the vanilla vs. french vanilla. Which one would you say looks like the ben nye banana powder the most???

  • Shi

Hi muse love your blog. I have a question can you use this powder to on your whole face to set your make up or just where you put concealer since its brightening? Thank you!

    • Isabella Muse

you can use it all over your face Shi if you like! 🙂 Thank you! So glad you like Musings!

      • lisa

Is the French vanilla darker or lighter than ben nye banana powder? Can you tell me the ingredients for this powder? Thanks!

  • devon

muse–have you ever tried the cake or cream mascara from besame? i stumbled across it in mindless makeup searches today and so far all the reviews i have seen have been wonderful! i was hoping that maybe you have tried it before :]

    • Isabella Muse

I haven’t but have many other cake mascaras I actually like 😀 I’ll have to see about trying besame’s version if you like it 🙂

  • Inquisitive

Hello! How do the two vanilla colors compare to Ben Nye’s Banana yellow? – Thanks!

      • Inquisitive

Thanks! Which of the two Besame come closer? The French Vanilla? Is that a warm yellow also? What do you think? Or is there another yellow powder you might suggest, that comes closer to the Ben Nye? (I ask because Ben Nye’s is full of ingredients I’d rather not have on my face.) -Thanks soOO much!

  • Maddie T

    Hello,

Does the entire lid and sifter for this container come off? Wondering if it is possible for me to refill with another powder and stuff.

    Thanks,
    Maddie

    • Isabella Muse

yes, close the dual lid, wriggle a small paper clip or butter knife under the rim and it’ll pop out.

  • Silvia

I only own a mauve blush from Bésame but it is super fine powered and velvety soft! Love it! Would love to get more colors.
