Sephora Jem and the Holograms Truly Outrageous Liquid Lip Set Review & Swatches
I’m here to tell you that the Sephora Jem and the Holograms Truly Outrageous Liquid Lip Set ($25) is in no way as disappointing as the Sephora Jem and the Holograms Truly Outrageous Eyeshadow Palette so you can all breath easy again.
The Sephora Jem and the Holograms Truly Outrageous Liquid Lip Set is a limited edition five piece liquid lipstick set that Sephora created in colloboration with the new Jem and the Holograms movie that debuts October 23rd.
I, like most Jem fans, am not really a fan of the Jem movie trailer I’ve seen. Let’s be real here, it looks all kinds of suck hard and apparently is prepped to ruin my childhood in aces. It may just surprise me though and become some cult classic awesomeness like Spice World (remember that train wreck? But I bet when it’s on TV you watch it though am I right?!).
None the less Sephora immediately cashed in on the fandom and created a Jem and the Holograms Makeup Collection and I had no doubts they’d do a great job with it. Sephora does a pretty damn good job on limited edition sets or collaborations they’ve done in the past! I think the Pantone Collection releases are testimony to Sephora’s best work. I just knew that their Jem Collection would be truly outrageous at the risk of sounding corny.
But….
The eyeshadow palette was big old hot mess.
I am however, grateful that the Truly Outrageous Liquid Lip Set did not fall victim to the same brand of awful.
Sephora Jem and the Holograms Truly Outrageous Liquid Lip Set includes five liquid lipsticks in colors that are apparently represented in the movie and there are nods also to the original cartoon. Each liquid lipstick is 0.083 oz in size and includes the following shades:
- Fashion Fame (light pearl pink)
- Like a Dream (mauve)
- Music is Magic (bright pink)
- To the Rescue (berry)
- She’s Got the Power (dark purple)

I think there are indeed shades here that remind of of the original cartoon. For example the bright neon pink called Music is Magic reminds me of Jem and To The Rescue reminds me of is a nice raspberry shade that looks quite like a shade Shana wore in the cartoon. Unlike the eyeshadow palette I did feel like there were nods all around here to the cartoon. The packaging you’ll either love or hate. These come housed in a glittery tray with a slip cover that features Jem’s star logo and each tube of lipstick has a light lighting bold on the cap that says Sephora with lighting bolts also featured on the tube and also Jem’s logo at the very top of the cap. It’s nice packaging but a bit rushed and cheesy. I wish they were able to splash some images from the cartoon on the packaging but to be fair this is a product to promote the movie not the cartoon.
I loved the consistency of these lipsticks. They quite remind me of Sephora Luster Matte Long-Wear Lip Color with a thick liquid-y texture that applies easily and sets to a comfortable matte finish. Four of the shades are lipsticks but for me Fashion Fame was the exception as this is more of a tackier drier gloss that would be best suited as an overcoat. I personally didn’t like the Fashion Fame color for a few reasons one of which is it spread and applied patchy plus the consistency was very tacky on bare lips. It wears a bit better over lipstick but on its own the shade is a chunky shimmery mess. Aside from that the other shades are simply gorgeous. They apply smooth, look flawless, and set to a lightweight finish that doesn’t migrate, feather, or crack through the six to seven hour wear. You will need a makeup or lip remover fluid to get this lipstick completely off as it is a very long wearing product and although it shows minor signs of fading it still remains intense for several hours and doesn’t completely fade without the aid of a remover.
She’s Got the Power
The the Rescue
Music is Magic
Like a Dream
Fashion to Fame
These are pigmented with an opaque finish on first application. They are quite thick but I had no issues due to that thickness. They do have a sweet kinda watermelon type smell and fragrance so sensitive users might wish to take note.
I think the packaging disappoints yes, but the contents are great. One shade was a miss for me in terms of formula but the other four shades are gorgeous. Pigmented, great formula, easy to apply, and long wearing, what more could you want from a liquid lipstick?
Thankfully the Sephora Jem and the Holograms Truly Outrageous Liquid Lip Set was pretty outrageous!
