Tarte Tarteist Lip Paint Review & Swatches

Tarte Tarteist Lip Paint1

Tarte Tarteist Lip Paint ($20) is a new permanent 14 shade selection of liquid lipsticks that launched with the Tarte Spring 2016 Collection. Tarte Tarteist Lip Paint is kinda getting mixed reviews but I have to admit to loving them. These aren’t your traditional wear all day liquid lipsticks which I’m perfectly fine with. I’m a little scared of long wearing liquid lipsticks to be honest!

If I’m eating I’m perfectly fine if my lip color wipes away as it is easy enough to retouch it. Wearing the same lip product for eight or more hours straight kinda freaks me out as it likely won’t remain completely perfect all day and it’ll be difficult to touch up without completely removing it first which will be difficult to do without eye and lip makeup remover. I also happen to have drier lips so yeah, I’m ok with a liquid lipstick that isn’t completely bulletproof.

Tarte Tarteist Lip Paint2

Tarte Tarteist Lip Paint are a super pigmented matte liquid lipstick however, they do promise long wear which they don’t completely deliver on so if you’re expecting 8 or even 12 hours of wear this might not be a pick for you! But if you’re ok with around five to six hours of wear, well dive in!

Tarte houses these in simple, basic packaging with a black top and gold lettering but the bright shades really shine through here and make the simple packaging look rather extraordinary against the backdrop of gorgeous, super pigmented shades. Each lipstick is 0.01 oz in size and has a sponge applicator for application. A few of the tubes I had issues with as I had an overflow of product over the top at times because the sponge does saturate quite a good deal with the lipstick. Many people complained about the formula being too gloopy and this does lead to some mess around the top of the tube at times so just beware.

I thought the formula was ultra creamy and almost whipped in consistency. It’s quite concentrated a little goes a very long way to create a gorgeous matte finish on lips with full, opaque color on a single layer. All the shades I tried provided intense, bright, bold color pay off. Although thick the formula thins out during application considerably and almost looks like a stain. They feel very lightweight on my lips and although they were not moisturizing, they also weren’t drying on my lips but they never quite set so they do tend to transfer if you’re drinking or sipping from a straw. They didn’t migrate though or feather plus they never set to a super dry finish which can cause flakiness. I’m actually fine with this as touch up is a lot easier with a product you can layer and build easily with or just wipe off and reapply unlike super long wearing liquid lipsticks that isn’t as easy to remove or build upon. They do have a minty flavor and fragrance which I thought was pleasant and did not irritate my lips in anyway.

So no, Tarte Tarteist Lip Paint aren’t going to get you 24 hours of wear. But yes, Tarte Tarteist Lip Paint are pigmented, comfortable to wear, easy to apply, and wear for several hours without fading or drying out so I’m perfectly happy with that. I’m not looking for a long wearing bulletproof liquid lipstick so this formula works out great for me. They are gorgeously pigmented, don’t dry my already dry lips out, and they look smooth, even and gorgeous on my lips.

Do like!

Try at least one shade as I have a feeling you’ll love ’em as much as I do!

Tarte Tarteist Lip Paint is available now at Sephora.com, Ulta.com, and tarte.com.

I’m so jealous of people who can wear matte lip products and actually make it look good! Anything even remotely approaching matte looks terrible on my lips. O.

    • Isabella Muse

haha I hear ya! I always feel weird in matte and I so can’t wear them well!

  • Maggie

Yay, I’d been holding off on purchasing one or two of these as I wanted to know how you felt about them first 🙂 Looking great as always Ms. Muse!

    • Isabella Muse

you are way too kind Maggie <3! Love ya! I think Tarte has 15% off if you're yearning for one or several haha!

  • Jess

I think you just sealed the deal for me. I was a little put off by some of the bright colors (only because I have so many and really need some everyday colors) but these look beautiful on you. I love matte lipstick and love the Stila ones but they ruin my lips after a couple of hours. Thank you so much for reviewing these!!! Happy New Year!

    • Isabella Muse

Aw my pleasure Jess! Let me know if you try, curious about your thoughts! xoxoxoxox Happy New Year!

  • Katherine T.

Muse, I’m with you. I don’t mind if my liquid lipstick isn’t bulletproof as long as it lasts a while , isn’t too drying, and is easy to re-apply. I think you are really rocking the red shades – Bae , Frenemy, Hangry, and Lovespell

    • Isabella Muse

aw thanks Katherine! Agreed, I’m cool with it if it doesn’t last all day as my lips are dry enough without wearing a single matte lipstick ALL DAY!

  • Nicole

Gorgeous!! I just told myself I wasn’t allowed to buy anymore lip products…but I just may have to bend the rules for these beauties!

  • diane

so far i got them in selfish, twerk & fomo (limited edition sephora shade) I really like the pigmentation, formula & how they don’t dry my lips out like a lot of long wear lippies do! I’ll be back for more I really want adorbs, so fetch, lovespell and namaste too lol

  • Penny

I have ordered Namaste, but haven’t received it yet…I really liked So Fetch on you! Hope you have a Blessed and Happy New Year! ♥

    • Isabella Muse

Let me know what you think when you get it Penny 🙂 aw thank you!!!!!!!!!!! And you as well!

  • amanda

all i can say is stay away from the color manbun! its like matte black, much darker than the tube leads on. if youre going for that look awesome, if not, steer clear. the formula is probably one of my favorites for liquid lipsticks though!

  • Terry Lam

Sounds like my kind of liquid lipstick! The colors look great too…very pigmented. I was waiting on your review first girl . And of coarse you came through quicker than expected Have you tried Colourpop liquid lipstick?? Is it very drying?? Love all the colors but I have to take myself knowing I don’t wear bright colors. Love all the nude colors!!

    • Isabella Muse

aw thanks flattered you were excited about my review 🙂 I haven’t. I read a review that said they were drying so I never bothered grabbing any of ’em!

  • Lisa

I love Namaste in the tube but for the life of me I can not figre out why it reads so pink on your lips!

  • Amber

Daang why do these have to be so pricey?! If I get a sephora coupon I will snatch these up for sure. They are so pretty. I at least NEED “so fetch” since I have that tattooed on me :’) Even if its not a color I would normally buy hah.

  • Deborah

Isabella, Hi Im Deborah I read you faithfully but quietly 🙂 Nice to “meet” you. I linked here from your review of “give me some nude” set that in cluded “namaste”.
I didn’t notice you mentioninig a particular favorite in the tarteist line. They all actually flatter you! Even the ‘scary nude’ lol. (I can relate and you are right NARS Dolce Vita is a hit for that, as is Cruising and Damage (for the very warm w pigmented lips). I love Damage. I have very warm toned but, extremely fair skin (b/c the foundation gods hate me lol). This seems to make me very difficult for matching I supose No SA has ever matched me correctly. I will look nice in store and then green, orange , pink or yellow in car-they touch me no more LOL, but I UNDERSTAND they are shaking in their boots as I approach b/c Im also a red-head. Not carrot top, not auburn. Dark orange kind of “red”….with again, a warm tone, actually a gold of sorts…….not the pretty pink, purple, aubergine or true crayon red undertones in dyed (usually cool toned if not dyed orange or copper).
So not only is foundation a night mare but so are NUDE lipsticks. I so often feel completely washed out OR just feel like I look ridiculous. But I love the look—With trial and error I have a slowly growing little collection of nudes and always on the look out. Have a few diff tones/finishes Im still after.
Hangry was MADE for you. You won the genetics lottery on skine tone/texture/elasticity but the color is just so complimentary and pretty on you. Not marketed as such but TBT is almost like a slightly dark mlbb (imo) for you-very, very nice. I love it on you. When I really started looking for “nudes” I stopped looking ONLY at colors marketed as nudes-if that makes sense…….we are all so different. What looks like a nude on one is beige on another, tan on her, orangey on me and brownish looking for the next…..etc.

    Thanks for your great reciews!

    • Isabella Muse

Hi there Deborah nice to meet you! 🙂 Aw thanks! I’m the same as you! I always feel very weird in nudes but trying out a ton has really helped as I’ve come across some great hits to add to my nude collection 🙂 OH WOW you are too too kind!!!!!!!!!! thank you! I agree, things labeled as being “nude” aren’t always a perfect pick for most skin types. Nudes are as unique as foundation shades sometimes! So when you find one it feels like you’ve won a major award lol! Thanks for your fab comment, it totally made my day today xoxoxoxoxo!

yeah, I feel like Tarte was a little late to the lip paint/liquid lipstick game. Then when they did come up with a liquid like lippie, it isn’t matte or long wearing. So there really isn’t any comparison to other brands. I haven’t tried these yet, but since they are basically just like a regular thin lipstick, I’m going to pass. thank you for your review!

  • Barbara S

Just put on So Fetch. So far the color is brilliant and my lips feel great! This is a bright pink. Feels like it will be great in the summer months ahead. Pretty. Let’s see how it wears.

  • Karen Flood

I love Adorbs!! It’s my favorite! It stays on for a very long time in combination with the lip liner which I don’t particularly care for.

  • casey23

Hi Muse! I’m sure you are already aware of this, but I read your complaint about liquid lipsticks staying all day kinda freaks you out since they will be removed halfly and it will be hard to touch up during the day, so I wanted to share my secret 😛
I always carry a lip balm with me. And when I use a liquid lipstick and the looks on me goes freaky after lunch, I apply a generous amount of lip balm on my lips and wipe away the residue of the lipstick. That way, when you want to re-apply, you do it on clean (and moisturized I might add) pout. The oil(s) in these balms always work great to remove the residue. My lip balms are always natural ones but even the petrolateum ones do the charm in this case 🙂 hope this works for you, take care!
