E.L.F. Poreless Facial Primer

I had a mild panic the other day when I came across E.L.F. Poreless Facial Primer in stores. Why? Because I thought to myself what if Revlon discontinued Photoready Face Primer. I’d be crushed, devastated, sad, possibly jump off a building in despair unhappy. Ok, slight exaggeration there but yeah, I’m pretty much a lover of Revlon Photoready Face Primer. E.L.F. primer just looked so much like it my life flashed before me without Revlon Photoready Primer in it and suddenly, I was all about finding a dupe!

When I saw E.L.F.’s Poreless Facial Primer sitting on the shelf, I thought to myself, “How great would it be if this was a six buck dupe of my beloved Revlon formula?” I’d sleep better knowing I had a back up just in case Revlon decided to axe it!

This is note a dupe of Revlon’s formula. I repeat, abandon ship, this is not a dupe of Revlon. This is in fact a bit, old hot slick mess.

So, it’s not new news that I have drier skin and I dislike silicone primers. It’s weird because Revlon’s formula is like a hybrid between a silicone primer and a moisturizer of sorts and I love the consistency and super smooth finish it provides. E.L.F.’s formula is promising! It’s a creamier texture that absorbs fairly easily and doesn’t have the stronger, matte finish of silicone primer’s such as Smashbox Photo Finish. It’s very light going on and absorbs fast enough. But wait for it….suddenly, almost instantly after application my skin becomes a big old grease ball. It does smooth and soften skin but the fact that it has such a slick, greasy texture literally makes foundation application a chore and never mind the fact it continues to create weird greasiness as the day progresses. I felt like I was literally melting with this under my makeup!

Holy cow!

My advice?

Avoid at all costs.

Don’t be tempted.

It’s evil!

That is all.

Tried it?

I have pretty oily skin and I actually like this primer! I think it’s a decent, low-cost alternative to pore-minimizing primers like Dr. Brandt Pores No More or Benefit The Porefessional. I only use it on my T-zone since I actually find it a bit drying on my cheeks, but I think it does a good job of mattifying. Funny how it seems to work so differently (and counterintuitively!) on different skin types!

I’m surprised! I’m dry too as you know so, I was worried it would me mattifying for me. Just the opposite, it felt like I rubbed vaseline on my face! WEIRD!

That’s too funny, I agree with Caroline! I love this primer!! Though I like the new Hard Candy one better haha this one is comparable to Pores No More!! (For me at least!! Oily in the T-zone)

you guys are lucky! I just can’t get on board with! I look and feel greasy with it on!

  • Deb

Oh Muse, you have saved what’s left of my sanity! I thought I was the only one to have mild panic attacks at the thought of a favorite product being discontinued. I’m so glad I’m not alone.

  • kimkats

Oh thank the 7 that I’m not the only one who hated this crap. you and I are skin twins, so it figures that we’d both hate it, even though it *sounds* like it should work. It takes a lot to make my skin greasy and shiny, but by golly, this crap did it.. HATE.

    • Isabella Muse

It feels like vaseline 🙁 Not sure WTH they did with it but man it is awful! totally makes me a grease ball!

  • Carol

omg I laughed so hard!!! thank you for your warnings!!!!!!!! <3

I have oily skin, and this makes me greasy, too. It feels nice going on but doesn’t stay that way for long. And yes, it really does make foundation slip and slide.

I HATE this primer!!! I love so many of the other of the Elf products, and I was sure I would love this, too. My husband had to wait for me countless times, because I had to take off ALL of my face makeup and start again because of this primer . Even though I gave it sufficient time to set, it did not work under my foundation. I am much happier with Primed and Poreless by Too Faced.

Seriously Revlon PR Primer is THE BEST and I too would be devastated if they ever got rid of it. I also tried this elf primer and had similar thoughts. Nothing will ever compare to R PR.

I have very dry skin and I love this stuff. However, a little goes a long way. It’s nice to be able to put foundation over it and not feeling like I’m spackling – it slips nicely over it and gives me blendability that I don’t have using just a moisturizer.

  • Chynna

Oh, sorry it was such a disappointment! I bought the Revlon Photoready Primer a few years ago based on your review and I also really like it. I used it when I was in a wedding party in Atlanta, where it held up (along with some UD All Nighter spray) under a sunny 1:00 photo shoot, then rain and 98% humidity. A huge belated thanks for that recommendation.

    • Isabella Muse

yay! I’m happy to hear that Chynna! It’s one of my favs 😀

  • Brittany Fletcher

I brought this stuff and I didn’t like it either. One thing you didn’t mention though that turned me off completely was the scent! It smelled minty or metholated. Maybe it’s just mine but I tried to get past that and then the product was awful. Oh well.

I actually love this primer (it’s my go-to for days when I don’t need heavy duty silicone). I have combo skin- mostly on the dry side but with serious shine and large pores on my T-zone. This controls oil where I get shiny but gives me a dewy finish on my dry areas and foundation goes on like a dream over it. But, you can’t use too much or you’ll get what happened to you. I use about half a pump for my whole face. If you didn’t throw it out in disgust, maybe try that and see if you like it better.

    • Isabella Muse

Thanks Thiel! I def used less but still slick as hell 🙁 I’m doing something wrong!?!

      • Thiel

In that case I guess your skin just didn’t agree with it! After all, the only hard and fast rule in beauty is YMMV!

        • Isabella Muse

too true! I see a lot of people saying they liked it and some having the same experience as I did! So def YMMV 🙂 Oh well!!!!! P.S. Happy Weekend 😀

ELF primers are my HG primers – I’ll use the hydrating primer or mineral primer even when I’m completely barefaced and I love the poreless primer for underneath makeup and the eyelid primer.

I reach for ELF primers over my high end primers all the time (Hourglass? Meh. Benefit? Enh.) and I recommend them constantly.

My skin is normal/combo and I find that these primers help my makeup last all day (even blush); I have a corporate job where I’m at the office a minimum of 8-9 hours a day.

It is truly a terrible moment when you find out that your favourite product is discontinued, or just as worse, when a brand reformulates it and it is awful.
    I haven’t tried this primer and I don’t think I will now.
I love the Nude by Nature primer (an Australian cruelty free brand) and it is non greasy, yet moisturising so my foundation really sticks to it.
