Do You Generously Apply Skincare or Are You Stingy with Application?

Do you generously apply your skincare? Or are you stingy with application? I mean, if you’re paying $80 bucks for your nightly moisturizer the struggle to apply a small amount is real right? I mean who wants to breeze through eighty bucks of facial cream in a month’s time because you were too liberal with your application.

Do you believe a pea size amount is plenty? Or do you feel like you need a quarter size or more to get the best benefits?

Just like makeup I am a heavy handed skincare application guru. I honestly, never feel like a “pea size” amount is enough. I wouldn’t say more is better but I personally feel I need more…..! Sorry!? Eep! I tend to splurge on skincare, it’s one area I refuse to skimp but that doesn’t mean that I’m stingy with application. I’m pretty liberal when I’m applying my eye cream, moisturizer, etc….! I’m also delusional believing more means more benefits…!

What about you?

Are you generous?

Or stingy?

Do share!

Isabella MuseIsabella is just an average everyday geeky girl who doesn’t blend her eyeshadow correctly, wears too much blush, and hopes she never finds her holy grail products because she likes the thrill of the chase so much. Her mission is to bring you super honest reviews on makeup, skincare, fragrance and all things beauty. She’s in no way an expert on the topic and she sure as hell isn’t a super model. I’m somewhere in between. For products for the face, I typically start with one pump, or a the size of 1.5 peas (lol) And I’m always willing to add more if I didn’t use enough. My face is relatively small and my skin is oily, so I don’t like to overload with product.
But body and hand lotions are another story – I slather that stuff on! Especially hand cream – my hands are so dry, I’ve always felt that I use 2-3 times more hand cream than the average person. I like to really work it in!

I put so much body cream on I probably glide when I walk lol!

  • Susan

I hope I’m in the “Goldilocks” area — not too little, not too much, juuuuust right. Too much of any product seems to make me break out, but on the other hand you need enough or else why use it? 🙂

  • Danielle

I do a barely there amount because I’m already an oil slick with absolutely nothing on- otherwise I turn into a grease pit!

  • Sara

Like Susan, I go the Goldilocks route. A friend from high school that I knew for a decade after we graduated was soooo stingy with skincare that I couldn’t believe that she was using enough to get any real benefit, so why bother? I definitely am liberal with most masks, though, just because it seems appropriate?

My skin, though, will only absorb so much so I’m not going to put a cherry-sized amount of moisturizer on my face, though.

Off topic, but I kind of want to garrote the model in the picture (or whoever was in charge of the photo) because really?!? Winged eyeliner when you’re applying a face mask?!? No.

I always start out with the “pea size” amount and add more if that’s not enough. I do tend to pray and light a few candles to the gods of skin care if I’m using a very expensive product and find that I need to apply more than I thought, thus making it run out faster.
What I do that is pretty interesting, if not somewhat crazy, is that when I am using a product that I know I will not re-purchase and I’m down to almost the bottom of the jar/tube, I tend to apply way too much in order to expedite its depletion. This drives me nuts because that’s when I realize that products that didn’t cut it for me seem to last forever! That bottom of that jar, I swear, just regenerates over night!!!!

I do this same exact thing. I bought a moisturizer I hated but refused to chuck it. So, I’d add two layers of it to try and rid myself of it twice as fast. When you don’t want something to run out, it seems to disappear so quickly. When you actively try to use something up, it lasts forever!

I’ve become more sparing over time (esp with serums and moisturizers) but utterly consistent. I get facials and I’ve noticed how relatively little product is used to get great results. Also, some of what I use would take many, many, many squeezes to get even a pea size amount. But,certainly in the case of say,Darphin’s Recovery Balm a quite small amount suits my super dry skin. Now with facial cleansers and all body products I am lavish.
OT,but have you tried the repetitive essence application(9 times?) routine? I saw this on Gothamista’s channel and will likely give it a shot when I’m bored in a hotel room somewhere.

I have not seen this but now I’m curious! I’m totally trying that lol!

I am liberal with moisturizer and sun protector. I have one rule. If i have to be in the economy class regarding these things I won’t buy.

My husband says that I look like I have been doused in grease when I leave the bathroom (from face to toes), so I would say….just enough. Lol, no, really I use more than suggested, but the more, the better, I say!

  • Kathy

I slather on cleanser and exfoliating products with abandon! But with my oily skin, everything else is applied sparingly.

Haa so normally in my hometown I’m so incredibly dry on top of the sensitivity. Since the pregnancy and the move to SO’s hometown? Not so much. My regular amount of product application would probably have been described as “too much” for gals with normal skin. But, here I’m finding it to be drastically different. Now, in an effort to not waste product and more importantly not break out (seriously I didn’t know well water would be such a huge change! Also, it turns everything orange/yellow which is weird and it is absolutely not drinkable) my T-zone I’ve resorted to applying a little and see if it’s enough, if it’s not try a wee bit more and hope for the best. I lucked out and did not suffer acne- ever- but now is the greasiest I’ve ever been! I feel like I’m way too old for this even knowing that many women go through changes like this after having a child. Apparently hitting the 30’s can set off skin changes too- I just didn’t realize it would take me back to adolescence…

Then there’s my body cream- which I still apply pretty generously. Only for some reason I have spots where it doesn’t do squat. There’s little dry patches along with the usual suspects like my knuckles, elbows and the outside knobs of my ankles but the place where my back meets my underarm?! And of course that itches so I get the dual benefit of dry itchy skin AND looking like a monkey when the itch becomes too unbearable to ignore. So Ive been trying different deoderants. None of which work to stop or even ease the itch. Everyone keeps saying Dove -but every. single. product. of theirs, save for the unscented or original bar soap- breaks me out in hives. And makes me sneeze up a storm…

There truly is evil in this world and it is honest to powers itchy armpits.

I tend to apply a moderate amount of everything except sunscreen… There I am extremely liberal.

I have tons of sample sizes of skin care products, and even with liberal application, I can’t get through them all. Of course, I’m still eyeballing special offers… Have you ever tried Colleen Rothschild? She has a sampler kit available half price on her website that I have heard good things about. Wondered if they are Muse approved!?

I am pretty generous when it comes to applying my skincare products. I have a bad habit/obsession with over purchasing them so I use them often and in good amounts. I don’t know why, but I always find myself buy a new moisturizer even though I have one on deck and haven’t finished the current one. Plus I like to try a variety of products for my nightly routine. I stick to them same toner but switch up serums and moisturizers often.

  • Katie

It usually depends on what I’m using. In the morning, I’ll use one pump or less of my moisturizer and let that soak in, since I have combination/oily skin. However, at night I’ll apply a thick layer of my night cream and let it sit on my face like a mask while I brush my teeth and finish anything up. Then I’ll massage the rest in. This seems to be working really well for my skin, as I’ve been less oily during the day since I’m hydrating more at night.

  • genevieve

I am pretty generous when it comes to skincare because I want it to work…..

    • Isabella Muse

LOL that’s so fun but I use more than two raisins for my facial moisturizer hehe 😀

  • Kirsten

No, but it’s because I usually do multiple products, so several layers- right now I’m using mostly Obagi and The Ordinary with a little Tata Harper thrown in. I spacle on sunscreen always and also hydrators if my skin goes alligator.

Hey, Muse, what’s up? Daisy sends kitty kisses to you! When I use my LaMer moisturizer, I use it sparingly. Given the outrageous cost, I have to, but when I have dry, flaky skin, I kick it up a bit. I use my Josie Maran light argan oil way more liberally. All other beauty products I use as much as I need. I have one old MAC blush I love so much that I try to restrict my use on; I’m hoping they’ll bring it back as some other type of color.

    • Isabella Muse

Hey Susan how are you? Aw she must be so big by now! 😀 I’ll be honest, I’m a little TOO generous with my La Mer eye balm! It’s costly as hell but I still slather it under my eyes a little too generously 😀
