5 stars out of 5

Missha All Around Safe Block Mild Essence Sun Milk SPF 50 PA+++ ($14) is an affordable SPF option from Korea that will totally change the way you feel about applying sunscreen. I think we can all agree that SPF can sometimes be a chore since many formulas are very thick, greasy, and need adequate time to set before any other skincare or makeup is applied on top of them.

Many, many years ago I migrated towards Japanese sunscreen since I loved the quick to absorb gel textures. I realize most days I’m raving how great Japanese sunscreens are but I forget how many fantastic Korean ones are around as well.

One of those being Missha All Around Safe Block Mild Essence Sun Milk SPF 50 but it does have one major downfall.

Like many Japanese sunscreens Missha All Around Safe Block Mild Essence Sun Milk SPF 50 contains alcohol denat. Sh1t!

That’s the one thing about most Japanese and Korean SPF formulas that sucks! Alcohol! Alcohol in all formulas. Where’s there’s a gel or thin formula they’ll be alcohol in my experience. It’s what gives these products their quick absorbing texture. It sucks to say the least but it seems to be a necessary evil.

Alcohol does break down collagen and of course, it’s quite drying but I have to admit I can’t be convinced to not use Korean or Japanese sunscreens because of those facts. I just love the quick absorbing formulas way too much to quit them. They absorb fast, wear well under makeup, and offer high levels of sun protection.

Missha All Around Safe Block Mild Essence Sun Milk SPF 50 is a light, thin, runny milk SPF that absorbs super fast into skin. At first it is a bit greasy but within seconds it sets to a very smooth finish. I actually never felt dry using this even though alcohol is the second ingredient. It’s fragrance-free but does have a sting if you get it into your eyes so beware during application.

Yes, the alcohol stinks but I still love this one and I pleasantly hide my head in the sand about the alcohol content.

Oh well! I’m sure there’s at least one skincare product you’re loving that doesn’t contain the best ingredients in the world am I right!? Spill! What is it?

I’ve been using the pink version of this exact sun milk and love the texture but it does have a very strong fragrance. I’ll have to check out the unscented one. Thank you!

As sensitive as my skin is, I’ve never really had problems with Japanese sunscreens. The water ones that you have to shake actually dry me out more than the gels. Thank goodness because I can’t go back to normal ones…

Me neither! Thankfully never drying for me either! I don’t like the milky/liquid ones either! They do set matte and leave me feeling dry toO!

    Thank you for this post.
I switched to La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer UV for the alcohol reason, but it’s only SPF 30 (and I’ve had stage 3 & 4 Melanoma). I’m super dry and live in dry, dry, dry Phoenix. If anyone knows of a great moisturizing Japanese or Korean sunscreen please let us know. I’ll jump on it!

my pleasure Debi! Sadly, most of the gel and hydrating Japanese ones have alcohol 🙁

I might have to try this one! I recently discovered Japanese sunscreen, and I’m not ever going back to American formulas! I ordered Nivea Sun Protect Super Water Gel Spf 50 from Amazon and was instantly in love with it. Thin, non-greasy, fast-drying, and no scent whatsoever.

I’ve been using them for over 10 years and I could never go back to American formulas either. Just to thick and horrible 🙂 Nivea is a good one!

Wow Muse, I love the new format of your blog! The overview and pro/con section are wonderful!

I’m not sure if it’s up your alley since it’s a somewhat thicker lotion consistency, but cosrx makes an aloe sunscreen that is my favorite sunscreen to date. I have oily/combo skin that’s super acne prone, but the lotion leaves zero white cast, hasn’t broken me out, and doesn’t leave me super greasy. Semi fast absorbing (about 1 or 2 min to really sink in) and smells great. I’m not sure of the alcohol content in it but I think it’s more towards the end of the list? Might be worth a shot. I’d love to see your reviews on more Korean items!

I haven’t tried it yet! I actually didn’t buy it because a lot of people said it was greasy! I’m happy to hear you had a good experience with it. I’m going to give it a try ;-D I have a lot of reviews on Korean, Japanese, Taiwanese, etc brands ;-D ten or more years worth haha ;-D all can be found here: https://www.musingsofamuse.com/category/beauty-abroad Jill Stuart, KATE, CosRX, Skin Food, Lunasol, Etude House, Tony Moly, Holika Holika etc…etc…!

It can be a little greasy but honestly I just let it absorb a little bit then powder with a no sebum powder from innisfree and its all good from there 🙂 nothing worthy of being a deal breaker for me, even with my oil slick of a t-zone

I gotta give it a whirl! I’ll let ya know what I think 😀
