E.L.F. Jelly Pop Watermelon Cleanser Review & Swatches
E.L.F. Jelly Pop Watermelon Cleanser ($8) is a new watermeon-infused gel cleanser that launched with the E.L.F. Cosmetics Jelly Pop Collection for Summer 2019 recently.
This is a fun collection and really appealing for hot Summer days. The packaging is bright and fun and the promise of watermelon scented skincare might be appealing due to the warm weather. It’s one of those playful collections that many influencers and gurus will have a blast Instagramming.
I’ve become a little more reserved with my skincare purchases lately. I guess with age you really do gain experience. I find myself checking over ingredients and although, I don’t always make perfect skincare purchases I do feel like I’ve improved considerably over the years and I’m not buying things just because marketing convinced me I need it. Of course, E.L.F. Jelly Pop Watermelon Cleanser was one of those purchases I made without really researching. It’s just a fun product and I found it very appealing because it has a certain K-Beauty feel and you know I love my Korean makeup and skincare.
E.L.F. Jelly Pop Watermelon Cleanser comes housed in a bright red translucent squeeze tube that holds 3.38 oz of product and will set you back $8. But really, you’ll likely never pay full-price for E.L.F. anything with all the sales and coupons that pop up. I’m unsure if they have plans to keep this collection permanent or if it’ll be around for Summer only. If you do love it and it disappears for some reason a good replacement might be the E.L.F. Bounce Back Jelly Cleanser which has a lot of the same ingredients and the same texture but does lack the fun watermelon fragrance.
Jelly Cleansers are fairly common across a lot of different Korean brands and if you’ve tried out the new Biore Japan line that’s available at Ulta you might have run across the Biore Aqua Jelly Makeup Remover which is quite like Jelly Pop Watermelon Cleanser. This formula is a thicker jelly texture! It’s almost like a hair gel texture if you can believe that. It doesn’t create lather and is meant to be massaged on a wet face and rinsed off. According to the directions you can use around your eyes and face. I didn’t try removing my waterproof mascara or eyeshadow as I don’t think it can tackle that job. Plus I have my own routine where I remove my eye makeup first and follow up with cleaning my face even when using cleansing oil or balm.
The first time I used it things went fairly well. This was initial test to see if it would strip my skin or make me tight or dry after use. All went well however, keep in mind my skin is a bit oily and less dry than it typically is in the Winter months. I had no tightness, no dryness, and my skin felt perfectly fine after rinsing and drying off. I wouldn’t say it provided any moisture or hydration but it didn’t dry me out either. It also rinsed clean away with absolutely no residue however, it is a little harder to break down with water if you apply a lot of it. A little goes a long way and really massage it in so it thins out before you rinse. It doesn’t emulsify but it will break down a lot easier if you spend time massaging it into your skin. I used it on my face and my eyes without issue. No stinging, no cloudiness. It seemed to remove all my makeup easily. It did have a very fun and strong fragrance that smelled like a watermelon Jolly Rancher.
A quick glance at the ingredients doesn’t reveal anything terrible aside from fragrance and it may contain RED 40 which is FDA approved.
The second time I tested it I wanted to get more details about how it cleansed. Sure, my face felt fairly clean after using it and it looked clean too but was it clean? I typically do the micellar test at the end of a cleanse to see how well my cleanser is working. Bad idea. First off, I did read a review on E.L.F.’s website where someone said this stung and burned their eyes terribly and instantly I thought back to how E.L.F. Micellar Cleansing Water ended up in my garbage. Apparently, the formula changed since I tried it but man, that stuffed burned. It seemed like the person reviewing Jelly Pop Watermelon Cleanser had the same experience I did bit instead of the micellar water she had it with this cleanser!. My first time trying it I had no issues however, after I cleansed my face and dried it I went in with some Tony Moly Peach Cleansing Water and I’m happy to report it didn’t show any traces of makeup on my cotton pad. This was a bad combination though! Whoa! I thought I had to go to the hospital for a second there! My eyes started tearing up and burning really, really badly after using the micellar water on my face and eyes. I guess the two products just don’t get along well!
Since that time I’ve been using Jelly Pop Watermelon Cleanser without any issue. No burning, no stinging, but I think it does deserve to be mention if you have sensitive eyes be careful.
All in all, this was a pleasant little cleanser. It’s nice for quick clean up and does well breaking down makeup without stripping skin! I’m glad I purchased it. Just don’t go combining it with other products!

It doesn’t emulsify, it merely rinses off. However, do spend time massaging into skin and thinning it out as it does take a little work to completely rinse if off. It doesn’t leave behind any residue after it rinses away and left my skin quite clean. It has a strong watermelon Jolly Rancher fragrance that some sensitive users might not love but I thought it was fun. Sadly, it may or may not sting eyes so use beware!
