Haus Laboratories Le Riot Lipgloss Review & Swatches
Haus Laboratories Le Riot Lipgloss is a new lipgloss formula created by Lady Gaga that’s available in six shades for $18 each. As you may or may not know Haus Laboratories by Lady Gaga was teased late this Summer and became available for pre-order on the brand’s website and amazon.com. I think I placed an order on amazon.com in August but my pre-order was shipped around September 20th or so. It was a long wait for something I wanted to try out immediately.
This isn’t Gaga’s first foray into beauty. In 2012, she launched her Fame Perfume amidst rumors that it smelled of sex, blood, and semen. I can’t make this stuff up, it really went down like that. Turns out it doesn’t smell like any of those things. Thank god because really does anyone want to go around smelling like that?
And of course, Lady Gaga had her Viva Glam Lipstick shades collaboration as well in 2011 and 2012 as well as makeup bags.
I don’t know about you but when you hear Lady Gaga I’m sure you think glamour, fame, edginess, legendary. Whether you love her with all your heart or hate her with passion and venom, she is, without a doubt a very talented lady. At the risk of pissing off her fandom I’ll say that the launch of Haus Laboratories is really, really mediocre. I was actually shocked to see how small the line was. The line consists of shimmer powder eyeshadows, lipglosses, lip liners, black eyeliner, an adhesive eye tattoo, and wing-tipped eye stickers (These are kind of nifty as I suck at creating a winged eye!). Where’s the blush? Where’s the powder eyeshadow? Where’s the lipstick? This is Lady Gaga! I expected SO much more! How do you do a makeup line with so few products? But I braced myself, hunkered down, and convinced myself what she did launch was going to be wonderful. I mean, more is less right? She didn’t have a complete makeup line here but that must mean she put a lot of time and attention into the formulas of the products she did launch.
Mmmmmm………….
Maybe.
Haus Laboratories Le Riot Lipgloss is available in a total of six shades. Again, very disappointing but maybe the brand will launch more in the future. Each lipgloss is $18 and arrived in very slick matte black ombre square barrel with a pyramid tip. It pretty looks like the Washington Monument on a way cooler scale. The glosses are 0.17 oz in size and just for comparison sake that would be a bit bigger than a MAC Lipglass which is 0.1 oz at $17.50. I’m making this comparison because the formula does remind me of MAC Lipglass just a touch thicker.
The packaging is modern and it looks and it feels like a luxury line. The barrel has a bit of weight to it and the simple black packaging gives it a very slick and edgy look. There’s also a really fantastic sponge applicator inside that’s larger with a nice curve to it.
I’m not going to lie I hated this formula when I first tried it. The applicator was NOT picking up color at all and I was getting a really patchy, tacky, sticky layer of gloss on my lips that look god awful. After a few uses I realized that for the best results I have to pump the wand into the tube a few tubes so the sponge becomes saturated with enough gloss for smoother application. Doing this ensured that I was able to get a very smooth, even layer of color on my lips.
Ok, so the truth here is you’re going to HATE this lipgloss if you don’t like MAC Lipglass. It’s thick, sticky, and tacky. If you can get past that it shows promise because it wears for ages! You can get a solid five hours out of this gloss without it slipping off or migrating on your mouth. You put it on and it stays on. It’s also quite pigmented as well and has a smooth, even, plumped up look (just remember by trick for pumping the wand into the gloss two or three times to get the sponge saturated well with gloss). To make it a little less tacky I started applying a bit of the Florence by Mills Glow Yeah Lip Oil on top of it! It’s already shiny to begin with but with the lip oil I get even more shine plus the tackiness disappears.
So….
Haus Laboratories Le Riot Lipgloss is actually not bad but not what I expected either. I’d probably purchase more of these if they did a few other shades! I’d love to see some wearable nudes in this formula. The entire Haus Laboratories launch is a bit disappointing though. I don’t think Le Riot Lipgloss brings anything unique or new to the beauty table. Not to mention the collection they do have available is so small. Like I said above, this is Lady Gaga, I expected something way grander!
In the end, Haus Laboratories Le Riot Lipgloss might be appealing pick for those that like thicker glosses and have no beef with formulas like MAC Lipglass. But if tackiness and stickiness is an issue for you I’d say avoid purchasing these.

Where to buy
Haus Laboratories Le Riot Lipgloss is a new lipgloss created by Lady Gaga that’s available in six shade selections for $18 each and weighing in at 0.17 oz. This gloss formula is a little thicker than a MAC Lipgloss but has the same tacky, sticky texture with a wear of five hours. Pigment was quite good on the glosses and they had no fragrance nor flavor with a nice shine finish that gave lips a plumped up look. If you can get past the tackiness the lipgloss formula is actually really great and wears quite long.
- Pigmented.
- Fairly priced.
- Slick packaging.
- No flavor or fragrance.
- Wears long.
- Tacky, sticky, thick.
- Applies patchy, sponge doesn’t saturated well with color, wand needs to be pumped a few times to get color flowing.
- Mediocre, uneventful release for something with Gaga’s name on it!
Haus Laboratories Le Riot Lipgloss should be an easy pick for those that enjoy the MAC Lipglass formula.
