Ok, You Got Me Avon, I’m Intrigued by Your New Niche-Style Fragrances

I receive a small commission if you shop through my link.

Avon has a new selection of niche, gender neutral fragrances called LYRD Artisan which were created by master perfumers according to the brand. Ok, so, who here is getting L’Artisan Parfumeur from these? Each of these scents is $53 (sale $42) which is probably the highest price I’ve ever seen for an Avon perfume before. Hmmm interesting.

The fact of the matter is Avon is a surprisingly interesting brand when it comes to perfume. I have a lot of fond memories and fond favorites from their perfume launched. Odyssey, Sweet Honesty, Haiku, there are just so many that I love and use to this day. Have you even lived if you don’t own a bottle of the legendary Haiku?

The reason I brought my love of Avon Perfumes up is because I have confident they can do a higher-end fragrance well. I find it interesting they are trying to touch on more of a niche style with these new LYRD Artisan scents.

Wonders if it’ll work?

Right now there are two scents in this collection one of which that has me very curious is the LYRD Artisan Cherry Vetiver Eau de Parfum with its notes of sweet cherry blended with with smooth Haitian vetiver and creamy vanilla.

The second scent is LYRD Artisan Santal Musk Eau de Parfum which is a blend of Indian sandalwood with white musk.

I’m thinking these can be terribly awesome or terribly wrong! Has anyone smelled them? I’m headed in for a blind buy on Cherry Vetiver possibly!

About the Muse

Isabella MuseIsabella is just an average everyday geeky girl who doesn’t blend her eyeshadow correctly, wears too much blush, and hopes she never finds her holy grail products because she likes the thrill of the chase so much. Her mission is to bring you super honest reviews on makeup, skincare, fragrance and all things beauty. She’s in no way an expert on the topic and she sure as hell isn’t a super model. But she’s passionate about makeup and is seeking like-minded individuals that like pina coladas, getting caught in the rain, and ones that enjoy spending hundreds of dollars at Sephora without feeling buyer’s remorse. From one of the four reviews (cherry, vanilla and vetiver, they say), I would be interested. I bought the Peony Rose perfume a few months ago and it is every one of my favorite smells of 90s perfume in one. I love it. It smells like optimism and naïveté.

Avon is really turning me all the way off with their apparent hard turn to el expensivo products. The thrill of Avon was that it was a great product at an affordable price; $18 for a blind buy lipstick as they DQ the colors in their regular line? No, thank you.

I look forward to your review if you buy it!

    • Isabella Muse

optimism and naivete lol! I love that ;-D I agree on prices! The prices on Avon have gone up massively in the last three years! Remember $3.99 lipsticks? No longer!

  • Dominique

I don’t know about these but Avon Velvet is a masterpiece! I haven’t been deceived with Avon perfumes yet ! (Except for the Fergie line. This was beyond me.)

  • Christina

Yes Haiku is amazing! I used to wear that all the time when I could wear perfumes. These new ones sound interesting; the promo pics certainly have caught my eye. I may not be able to wear perfume (woe is me!!), but I love discovering and testing them out in the stores. Let us know if these are any good!

      • Christina

Nope, I’m just super sensitive to scents around me for some reason. Everything makes me nauseous. And to think I’m getting a cat soon. O.o The only scents I really tolerate, and we’re not just talking about perfume here, is the aroma of food cooking. I can’t even handle fake apple pie lotions or candles.

I desperately want to wear perfume. It’s just so glamorous to me, and I used to watch my mom spritz on perfume before bed, including Haiku and a bunch of other Avon fragrances. It’s definitely nostalgic for me.

        • Isabella Muse

oh no! a cat is a big smell girl! You gonna be ok? Food too? How odd! Every see anyone about it?

        • Donna Jensen

I am also sensitive to smell and I think the worst smell in the world, almost, is highly scented cat litter. Congratulations on getting a cat though!

  • Jackie

Ok, you’ve snagged me with Santal Musk.
I have no problem with Avon. I’ve used some of their products for decades, mainly foot creams, bubble baths, hand & cuticle creams, etc. I’m definitely checking out these fragrances!

    • Isabella Muse

I don’t either. Avon makes some good stuff! Some items are a miss but there are more hits than misses!

  • Claudette

OMG I have very fond memories of Timeless from the 70’s and Odyssey from the 80’s. I still have old bottles and every now and then I’ll wear them and I am immediately transported back to memories of the time I used to wear them of people, places, and things. They’re like my own personal time machine. Such is the power of fragrance.

    • Isabella Muse

I repurchased the them recently and they still smell as amazing as ever!

  • Annamaria De Lillo

I have the Cherry Vetiver – it is a gorgeous fragrance for Autumn! These fragrances are supposed to be gender-neutral. I could see where a man could wear this. It is a luscious blend of cherry and vetiver, which is a type of grass, so it’s not flowery. And OMG the Santal Musk (sandalwood and white musk!) is so sexy!! Both of these are. I love the cool, contemporary look of the bottles. Everything about these is perfect. I didn’t think they could come up with something as lovely as VELVET. But these 2 fragrances are right up there with it. These are definitely Autumn/Winter fragrances. Love Love Love!! The fragrances that come under the “Artisan” LYRD line are a whole other category of fragrance.

    • Isabella Muse

tell me more about the Santal. my nose always picks up leather with santal fragrances, are you getting that? I’m curious!

  • Donna Jensen

The cost totally turns me off. I agree that Avon makes some great products but I wouldn’t go to them for high end stuff. I had no idea they were charging $18.00 for some lipsticks, as mentioned below. Are they going to turn out like Sears, totally forgetting their core market and trying to go aspirational, only to lose it all? For some reason I find this really depressing. Avon is an iconic American brand.

    • Annamaria De Lillo

The 18.00 lipsticks actually are not by Avon – they’re from The Face Shop, VDL and FMG, which are cosmetic companies out of South Korea – which Avon now carries (since they were purchased by LG). These lipsticks are freaking awesome! The VDL primers are yes, expensive – but they’re by VDL. South Korea is the hub of all trends in cosmetics and it’s obvious with these lipsticks. Avon still carries some of their own branded lipsticks at $6.99 — so since the LG purchase, what they’ve done is expand the lines. They have lower priced items for those who don’t like the high prices, and they carry the expensive “trend-setting” stuff for those for whom price isn’t a factor. You have to change to stay relevant, especially in the cosmetics industry. Last month they did a whole “Iconic Avon” promotion (which they successfully did last year too) – where certain products were repackaged in “vintage” packaging and certain pieces of jewelry from the ’60’s and 70’s were reissued. So there’s more choices now – there’s something for everybody, and that’s always a good thing.

IMO it is a VERY overly courageous move to start selling things in the price range Avon has, AND to really only offer a “discount” if you shop with a rep.

I really want to try these, but their business model firmly stops me.

18/22 dollars for an Avon lipstick? Hard pass.

🙁 RIP old Avon, I loved you so.

  • Julie Fielding

    Isabella,

Thanks for the write up. Want to hear something crazy?!? Well, you may/probably already know, but one of my former Avon employees showed/told me about the newest perfume coming out called Charmed. Ridiculously exclusive, only 1,886 bottles in production. She said $1,000, but I’ve seen reports that it will be $1,200! Don’t think I can break down for that one…might pimp her out for her discount, but we’ll see what the demand is.

    • Isabella Muse

      WHATTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT! tell me more!

      • Annamaria De Lillo

Yes…this is true. It is obviously a collectors’ thing – like Isabella states, they only made 1,886 exclusively numbered pieces. The bottle (if you can even call it that) is in the shape of a peacock (with its tail down and the head of the peacock looks like it’s facing sideways). The peacock is finished in 18K gold with 21 Swarovski crystals (different colors on its tail “feathers.”) It’s stunning – it’s like a sculpture. And it comes in a “distinctive wooden box – when you open the box (it’s opens up in the middle, and the peacock is sitting on a column). The description says that the ingredients of the fragranced was gathered from around the world, and will include a letter from Master Perfumer Caroline Sabas along with the exclusive limited edition number. The fragrance is described as “warm and dreamy.” It’s a “radiant burst of crisp neroli as lily of the valley and jasmine absolute create a delicate floral veil. Notes of warm musk add a seductive dimension to this captivating fragrance.” It’s 3.4 fl. oz. and yes, it’s $1,000.00 Again, like I said, this is a collectors’ thing – it’s like buying a piece of artwork. They had one of those finger-rub things where you can see what it smells like….It DOES smell “warm & dreamy!” It’s like a powdery floral musk. It’s a “tad” out of my price range for fragrance – but guess what – all 1,886 of these will go. There’s a market for EVERYTHING.

        • Annamaria De Lillo

Ooops, sorry – I meant to say “as Julie said…” regarding the pricey perfume.

        • Isabella Muse

It’s on the site now! but not for sale yet (or has it sold out already?!??!). It’s def out of my price range. I’ve dropped $$ on fragrance but never $1000! WHOA! Is it gorgeous and worth the $1000? Warm and creamy sounds lovely but is it a $1000 worth of warm and creamy? ;-D The bottle is stunning! Too bad they didn’t have two versions! One is the beautiful packaging and another in a basic bottle!

I live in Illinois, right in the heart of corn country. I have sold Avon for 26 years, but unfortunately, this will be be my last. The acquisition from South Korea has tanked my sales, and many other local representatives that I know. I hear about the price increases daily, and how the “new Avon” has discontinued so many of the tried and true products of old. I agree with the comment about having to change with the times, but there is more high end products now than the basic value items Avon has been known for. $1000 bottles of perfume with a 18k gold peacock on it? Maybe that sells in the New York City or Beverly Hills area, but not in the Midwest. If you haven’t seen an Avon brochure lately, you will be shocked.
