What’s the Beauty Ritual You Miss the Most That COVID Took Away From You?

Last year was the year of self care! Everyone was really into taking care of their skin, their minds, their bodies! Some of us learned to cook, some of sat on the couch to watch our favorite Netflix shows to heal our minds and keep us from watching too much news, some of us took better care of our skin, some of us took long baths and put masks in our hair, some of us decided to walk around the house with a full face of makeup on, some of us just laid in bed and let a good book carry us away from the drama. Whatever way you healed yourself and took care of yourself last year I hope you found comfort in it and it eased your worries and relaxed your mind.

I definitely did a lot of face masks, I definitely walked around the house with red lipstick on, I definitely sat on the couch with excessive amounts of peach highlighter to watch TV (Pedro enjoyed it), I did learn to cook, I did read, I did take long baths, and I did discover the joys of different hair styles especially different braids! I did all these things and it was glorious. COVID may have gotten us all down in the dumps at times but it also gave us a much needed break from the world and other people and allowed us to learn new things, it taught how to enjoy the little things in life, and maybe it brought some of us closer together with our partners, boyfriends, girlfriends, siblings, kids, husbands, wives, etc…!

BUT….

It took some things away from us too. Somethings we miss. Like going to the movies, having Sunday brunch with our friends, walking around our favorite store without feeling stressed about being so close to strangers, and of course, it took some beauty rituals away from us too.

What beauty ritual do you miss the most that COVID took away from you?

Real talk.

I had to wax my mustache this morning and 10 out of 10 I don’t recommend it. Since lock down I’ve learned how to wax my brows and I wouldn’t recommend it either! It’s way to stressful feeling like you’re about to yank off way too much hair but doing one’s mustache is particularly stressful!

I miss threading! I miss it so hard! I haven’t had anyone thread my brows or lip since February last year! Totally have to rely on my own powers to get this done. Waxing ones mustache isn’t only painful but it’s really hard! The first time I attempted it I did get part of my upper lip a little and since the area was chapped and dry I bled. Thankfully I’ve learned since that mistake. But I swear I just can’t seem to get the wax strip on the area correctly. I started cutting them in half and seeing if that helped a bit. I also really have to sit their and sort of pep talk myself into the pull! I put it on and proceed to talk to myself in the mirror! “You got this! No pain, no gain! You can do it! 1, 2, 3!” I try to hold the skin taunt as a pull but it feels difficult to do both things at the same time not to mention when I do finally pull I ALWAYS, always, ALWAYS, have to go over it again as I never get all the hair in one go.

Stressssss!

Waxing is no joke.

I can’t wait to get back to having someone thread my brows and upper lip. I miss it.

What beauty rituals do you miss that you gave up because of COVID?

About the Muse

Isabella MuseIsabella is just an average everyday geeky girl who doesn’t blend her eyeshadow correctly, wears too much blush, and hopes she never finds her holy grail products because she likes the thrill of the chase so much. Her mission is to bring you super honest reviews on makeup, skincare, fragrance and all things beauty. She’s in no way an expert on the topic and she sure as hell isn’t a super model. Don’t know if it’s a ritual per se, but it kind of was for me — I miss browsing Ulta and trying testers.

    • Isabella Muse

I do too. I miss going to counters, sephora, ulta and walking around! Also, I miss Target. All my Target trips are super fast and go! I miss strolling around!

      • Mary B.

Me too! That hit me especially hard before Christmas. Still, I’m alive so feel I can’t really complain.

btw, I totally hear you on the upper lip waxing. Last time I tried it, it took off skin. A scab on my upper lip was much less attractive than hair. :-O I now use one of those tiny shavers that looks like a big lipstick case. Got it at… Target!

        • Isabella Muse

DITTO DITTO DITTO! I can’t express enough how grateful I am that none of this has truly made my life difficult. I have my health, my friends/fam have their health, I have my job, a warm bed to sleep in, no complaints at all! But I do miss some of the beauty rituals! Haha yup that was me walking around with a little scab for like two weeks! For some reason when you get one by your lip it refuses to heel! I always want to shave but I’m sort of scared it’ll look bad! five o clock shadowish or something!

          • Mariele

If it makes you feel better, I shave my jawline/cheeks/mustache because I have a ton of facial hair. It just makes my skin super soft, never “5 o’clock shadowish”. 🙂 Every once in awhile there’s a particularly stubborn black hair that stands out after shaving, but it’s easy to grab those with tweezers.

        • Jess

I have 1 single darkish hair that grows on my upper lip that I pluck out and that ish hurts! I couldn’t imagine the pain of waxing my entire upper lip. You’re a brave soul.

As far as what I miss….everything. Not gonna lie, I’ve lost my love of putting on makeup and now I mostly just don’t anymore. I still like seeing the new releases but I have no motivation to buy anything or wear it. This feeling started when masks became mandatory everywhere. I hope when the masks go away my love will return. At this point, my stash hasn’t been touched in months

          • Isabella Muse

haha! I find plucking my upper lip super painful! at least wax is one rip and gone but plucking goes on and on and on ;-D aww sorry to hear that 🙁

  • Amy

EVERYTHING 🙁 I don’t bother with my hair or makeup anymore and I’ve even gained weight. I feel sooo awful. Covid hit and I just went downhill :c I used to be so obsessed with keeping up with the latest hair, skincare and makeup and now I have no idea about anything anymore.

    • Isabella Muse

Aw Amy! Don’t let it get you like that! You gotta pull yourself up! Do your makeup and your skin routine for you! It’ll make you feel much better! Hang in there!

    • Dee

Amy, this was me. I joked with my friends that I had two types of pajamas. The one I wore to bed and the ones I wore during the day. I didn’t do my makeup or hair and gained some weight. I literally forced myself to start doing my make up again. I even wear lipstick in the house. At first I thought I looked silly but now I just enjoy it and don’t care if no one else sees it. Started going for walks, etc and it has helped my mental state of mind. This really will be over!

  • Dee

So much I miss! I haven’t had my brows threaded in almost a year due to covid and I was thinking last night how much I wish I could have it done. I’ve tried the little razors etc but nothing works as well. And I miss getting my hair highlighted and cut on a regular basis. I went last summer but stopped when case numbers started climbing again.

I also miss just going to the mall and browsing. Just being around people! I am a homebody and for the most part haven’t minded being home. But the ability to just get in the car and go where I want, when I want and to be around people and my friends has been so hard.

What I miss MOST of all is being around my kids and parents. I see my parents twice a week in their driveway and we have gotten together with our kids outside. That has been the most difficult. I realize that isn’t a beauty ritual but it’s what I miss the most!

    • Isabella Muse

I think we all miss human contact the most 🙁 even introverts must be feeling a bit lonely and yearning for their fam/friends! 🙁

  • Michelle

I don’t know if it counts as a ritual, but I’m an avid lipstick wearer. I miss that so much!

      • kjh

Yup. Somewhere in Dec I decided to put l/s and blush on when I got home from day job and was going nowhere. Sounds nuts, but not only does it give you a pick me up, but it refreshes your memory for your stash. I never knew I had such m/u dementia. There are so many, ‘Wow, I really like that’ moments to have. And what you (re-)learn about your products will be relevant soon, I hope.

  • Deb

Botox. Those lines between my eyebrows get so deep it’s not even funny! I was a squinter my whole life and am now paying the price. Don’t squint!!

    • Isabella Muse

Aw! I always wondered how people that did botox and fillers are doing!

      • Amber G.

I was actually going to leave the same comment! I did get some in Sept and a little more in Oct (don’t judge; it had been a while! LOL). I’m really missing it again..

        • Isabella Muse

Omg no judgement at all! I’ve never had any botox or fillers but maybe one day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know I’d prob miss it too! 😀

  • Kimmwc03

I’m right there with you. I’ve had my brows done but not the upper lip since you can’t have that done with a mask on. I need the professionals to do a good job cuz I seem to miss almost every hair and still irritate my skin.

    • Isabella Muse

I’m actually scared to even have someone in my face to do my brows! 🙁 SAME HERE! I swear I have to go over my lips three times. They get it in one go and I’m sitting here with wax all over myself!

  • Kathy

Pedicures – so relaxing and I’m proud of my feet. I can never do as good a job and I don’t have the wax to the hot wax treatment.

    • Isabella Muse

oh yes pedicures! I miss them! I do them at home but it isn’t the same!

  • Laura

The struggle for self waxing is REAL! Not sure if this will help but put some baby powder over the area before you wax. It makes a huge difference. I wax my bikini, legs and used to do my face before I started Retin-a.

  • Hannah K

So full discolsure i still get my eyebrows threaded, i feel so guilty but i have crazy bushy brows and it really effected me emotionally when i had to take care of them myself for a few months in lockdown. Its the one thing i can’t give up! However i have foregone my ritual of pedicures and i dearly miss that. I also greatly miss regular haircuts and makeup shopping in person! So many things i look forward to doing again post covid.

Other then that i have been trying my best to still maintain my beauty routine to keep me sane haha. Putting on makeup daily even if its just a very simple look and doing my styling my hair even if the only place i am going is target it makes me feel like me.

    • Isabella Muse

If you feel comfortable with it I’m not judging because I am too a busy brow girl and it makes me very uncomfortably having them run wild! I haven’t done them because I’m a bit scared and don’t feel safe doing them. I’ve been trying to learn to do them myself so far it’s gone ok but I dearly miss a good threading 🙂 I totally do all that too because it feels normal and it also makes me feel good! ;-D even for a simple target run!

  • Robin Hawkins

I miss going to Sephora ans Ulta just to smell the new fragrances or swatch the newest eye palettes. I miss testers of all kinds as they helped me make up my mind. I went to Sephora recently and it’s not the same. The employees were apologising for no testers and I told them it was not their fault. These are small things I know and my family is fine. But you miss what you miss.

    • Isabella Muse

makes sense to me Robin! I did so love a good stroll around Sephora!

  • TC

I too am missing my brow shape and tint. I’ll admit I have a little Botox for a brow lift and to even up my face and hooded eyes as without it I have one large and one squinty eye, both with hoods. Very noticeable in pics and on video conferences. The benefit brow bar does an amazing brow service and that’s the icing on the cake for making me look polished and even. Sadly I have had neither done in a year now…so I’m back to square one. I’m also missing pedicures, and body polishes, it’s just not the same doing it at home, but if I had to chose just one thing i miss most it would be the brow shape and tint.

  • Cindy

MY LIPSTICK! I organized my massive collection during lockdown and now it sits there just waiting for me :(.

I get my brows done but it’s not the same because Ulta went and laid off the girl I was using for years and the other girl there just doesn’t get what I want! I had it done at my hair salon but I don’t know what she cleaned her scissor & tweezer with (there was no wax involved), but I got a BAD chemical burn! And she barely touched me with the tools! Very aggravating when you can’t go back to the person you like!

  • Mariele

My lipstick. 🙁 I’ve always been minimal with my makeup–brow powder, a hint of powder eyeliner, a touch of foundation on my cheeks, some subtle contour, and then a strong, red lip. I’ve gone through three tubes of the same shade! The 1940s look was my everyday look. People in college referred to me as “the one with red lipstick”. So needless to say… with masks on, my look is completely gone. I don’t wear eyeshadow or mascara. There’s just no point in wearing makeup at all. I just fill in the bald spots in my brows before heading out the door.
When it comes to COVID, I can safely say I’m looking forward to two small pleasures when this all ends (maybe next year): physically browsing the library and wearing my red lip again!

  • Jennifer F

For the ladies that wax, have you tried the No Mo-Stache pink facial razor?! You can find it at Target for $8. It is crazy sharp and it whisks away hair and fuzz quickly and painlessly.

My facialist (omg, I miss facials and massages!!!) did not believe in waxing because she said the tugging ages/damages your skin over time. She was in her 60’s and looked 40 and flawless so I believed her. She always used a razor on me so I started doing it at home too. Maybe try it…? It’s literally painfree. See pix of the cute razor IG @jennifer.refinedbeauty

  • Kel B.

i haven’t had my nails done in almost a year! the last time i had acrylics was for st. pattys. i also haven’t gone for any botox treatments. on the plus i have been saving $$$

  • Lexi

I miss waxing, pedicures but most of all I miss massages! They really helped me with stress relief. I think it’s going to be a long time before those come back.

  • susjosefina

I’m in FL, Gulf Coast. Everything is open! Salons are very cautiously spacing appts, one client at a time, masks required, hand sanitizer, etc…I even went to a spa and had weekly massages last month, they take temps at the door and you fill out a simple COVID questionnaire. It is possible to enjoy salon services and be reasonable, safe, and secure. I’ve had haircuts, highlights and roots dyed in the past 8 months. I’ve gone to the gym as soon as they reopened in May. I go out to restaurants. I even flew to a family emergency situation in Atlanta in September. I’m not dead! I haven’t gotten so much as a sniffle. I’m a front line doctor working with patients in an urgent care. If you are healthy and have no pre-existing problems, go out and be sensible, live! the lockdowns and the lack of life will destroy more Americans than the actual disease. Sad to say it but the lockdowns have forced more people into concentrated areas like their apt. buildings or big box stores where they’ve spread disease, as opposed to the entire population spread out geographically and not crowded–with this plan, we will have less disease as is evidenced by the Florida data. Yes, old people, lung disease, immunosuppressed–people die of the flu every year, kids and healthy people, and nobody did a thing about it! I’m not a COVID denier. It’s a real nasty infection. But the panicked responses have to stop and you have to make your way back to living. Don’t be afraid to go to the doctor and get your checkups, breast cancer and anemia haven’t gone away, support and go to your local salons, they don’t want your infections but they need to work, they are super cautious! support them to stay open or they will close forever! please take care of your mental AND physical health!!! –muse, sorry to vent like this but I believe we in the public will have to make a concerted effort, we have to push for normalcy, the government will never voluntarily roll back restrictions unless you fight for your liberty/ The “experts” are not experts, they knew nothing, and politically, they are afraid of being blamed for a cough!

    • Isabella Muse

Rant away 🙂 I’m listening! Here in NY cases are up so I’m trying to be safe as possible so haircuts, pedicures, etc…are something I feel safer avoiding! Everyone is different when it comes to how they want to stay safe. Some people have anxiety and feel safer staying home. It’s sadly not great for the economy but until this is better under control it’ll be hard pressing people to out and eat at restaurants and do normal things. Thank you SO much for your work during this trying time. We all appreciate doctors, nurses, and essential workers so much more than ever after COVID. What you do isn’t easy!

  • onyx

    Pedicures!
I’m in California and everything is on lockdown, and has been for a while. I can trim and paint my own toes, but I miss the whole scrub/hotwax/massage thing so, so much!

  • B

Yep, another Florida girl here. I can confirm what J. said. I feel badly for friends in NY, especially with A416 being moved thru the NY legislature.

Go ahead and shave…I’ve shaved my chin and mustache daily for years because it hurts too much to wax. It’ll be fine. I use a men’s electric razor. I also shave the rest of my face with a men’s double blade razor & Suavecito shave cream when the peach fuzz gets unruly…maybe every 10 to 14 days.

    • Isabella Muse

Oh gosh I doubt A416 will pass through! They’ve tried before and failed during the Ebola scare. Honesty, shaving scares me a little always worried about a shadow!

  • B

I can understand that if you have dark hair.( The hair on my face is light, but if I don’t shave, any foundation or powder looks terrible!) Ah, the joys of getting older!
I remember that with the Ebola scare…I worry this time because the Assembly, Senate and Governor are all the same party now. Keeping my fingers crossed!
    You have a nice evening!
