“I’m Just Sitting Here Watching the Wheels Go Round and Round I Really Love to Watch Them Roll”

I do admit that I can be a complete b1tch when it comes to repetitive releases or beauty trends that make a come back. Like many of you I’ve collected and worn makeup for many, many, many years and like many of you I feel like I’ve seen everything to a point that maybe there isn’t anything else to see. Maybe there aren’t any brand new, exciting innovations left. Maybe there are no more “WOW I NEED THAT!” moments to be had. Maybe there is nothing left that will send us into a makeup frenzy.

I know I can be very negative about repetitiveness and I can be b1tchy when beauty trends start repeating themselves. I don’t always like the “what’s old is new again” trend. I want fresh, I want new, I want exciting but maybe we’re just out of ideas at this point.

I realized something about myself though! I kind of just like sitting here watching the wheels go round and round and I kinda really love watching them roll even if they aren’t new and exciting and fresh and innovative and amazing and not evoking that I NEED A BACKUP moment. I don’t think Lennon was talking about makeup when he said that but it does apply here.

Sephora Microsmooth Multi-Tasking Baked Face Palette and Microsmooth Multi-Tasking Baked Face Powder released late last month for the Fall 2021 season and it instantly transported back to really good days with Laura Geller. How far do we need to go back to remember when Baked Blush n Brighten and Balance n Brighter were amazing? 10 years? More? Personally, I feel that the formulas has changed on both products and not for the better….! But that’s neither here nor there, I’m just happy to see baked anything reappearing in my beauty life because I love baked makeup.

Yes, I said it.

I love baked makeup.

I make no apologies for this. Bourjois Paris, in it’s Chanel heyday, was a beautiful thing to behold. I stand by my right to say that and I’m sorry if their baked formula did nothing for you but they rocked my socks right off my feet.

Sadly, I dunno if Sephora’s baked formulas will do the same. And I’m not no illusion that the formula will suddenly become popular again because it was never really popular to begin with.

But if you like baked formulas perhaps you’ll love these! And sometimes it’s ok to like watching the wheel going round and round. And it’s ok to not expect any great changes only re-imaginings of prior releases.

About the Muse

Isabella MuseIsabella is just an average everyday geeky girl who doesn’t blend her eyeshadow correctly, wears too much blush, and hopes she never finds her holy grail products because she likes the thrill of the chase so much. Her mission is to bring you super honest reviews on makeup, skincare, fragrance and all things beauty. She’s in no way an expert on the topic and she sure as hell isn’t a super model. But she’s passionate about makeup and is seeking like-minded individuals that like pina coladas, getting caught in the rain, and ones that enjoy spending hundreds of dollars at Sephora without feeling buyer’s remorse. I actually really love “baked” products. I love the Milani baked blushes and bronzers. They are a really good drugstore purchase. MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural is my favorite powder of all time. So…I’m with you on the baked goods (cookie too:). The only downside is the packaging for baked cosmetics is usually too big and you can’t depot them.

ME TOO! I remember getting so much hate on baked products back in the day but I’ve always loved them! (cookies here too! Ha!) Yeah, depotting backed anything is a dangerous task! You have a good breakage chance!

Loved Bourjois in that era. Lipsticks esp were great. Liked Gellar blushes, too. The newer formulas, the slurries, the hybrids go bad far quickerand not just drying out. At my age, virtually everything is a rerun. And if we didnt see it here before, wed had it in Asian, at least in the past 1-2 decades. There are only so many tweaks. If you look at Christines dupes, you usually get at least 10 by ColourPop. And theyve only been around since 2014. The baked minimized the kick-up, though. Laura G is out of Ulta, replaced by Laura M. LG is big on a shopping channel, air? Maybe a swing back to baked is in the cards.

It was a good run with Chanel! The lipsticks were incredible! Ahh we haven’t seen good slurries lately! It’s not big with younger girls who want pigment, pigment, pigment! They don’t feel slurries have the blendability of a traditional powder! Colourpop is a case study in how to create and recreate the same stuff over and over and make millions doing it lol! Naa Laura is barely on lately! She just slipped away a bit!

Bourjois had some nice baked blushes back then. I enjoy using baked blushes, but not so much baked eyeshadows. When you think of it, isn’t the gelee formula also a baked formula, just with a different, denser consistency? I feel like gelee eyeshadows also have that slight translucency to them that remind me a lot of baked eyeshadows.

I also like my Laura Mercier matte radiance powder, which I’m pretty sure is baked. If these Sephora powders are just as smooth, I might see if a colour matches me.

They did sigh! Def denser and a bit drier as well but gelee is probably the consistency that most resembles that of a baked one! Honestly, baked has always been appealing as I can’t overdo it! The pigment is always buildable but never outrageous!

I bought a baked blush from Biguine in Paris in 2007 and the color and formula was perfect. I even used it after it smashed into little pieces. That’s as far back as I’ll go!

I also enjoy my baked products…Bourjois blush, Mac MSFN, Laura Gellar eyeshadow duo, Flower Beauty bronzer. The Sephora palettes are so pretty. Happy weekend!

I like baked eye shadows (silver, black) a lot. It’s so nice to get a pigmentation punch wet and then blend out the edges dry. I like baked highlighters, too. I can do a really metallic wet look or a subtle pearly natural look. I haven’t tried a baked face powder yet. I wonder what that’s like wet.

  • Lexi

Yes! The Laura Geller ones are the best! Did they change? I only have some really old ones.
