4 stars out of 5

Too Faced Better Than Sex Eau de Parfum is a new, limited-edition spicy amber floral fragrance that launched a few months ago. There’s was a lot of hype surrounding this fragrance as it initially sold out very quickly when there was a live Too Faced event on Instagram to celebrate the initial launch. Lucky enough it was soon restocked and has now been readily available at both macys.com and toofaced.com for a bit now.

I think part of the hype about the scent was the bottle. The bottle really sold the fragrance to people! The fact of the matter is that packaging is still key in the beauty world. If it looks good, people want it. Seriously, it can be the worst product in the world but if you package it up and make it look princess-y, cute, or elegant it’ll be an instant buy for a lot of people. Hey, no judgment, because for most of my beauty life I’ve been a complete packaging junkie and I can’t lie and say that my Too Faced Better Than Sex Eau de Parfum purchase was because I loved the notes. My purchase was a complete blind buy based on the bottle alone.

This week macys.com is offering 15% off beauty with code OWNIT and yup, this happens to be included in the sale. Maybe that’ll make you feel a little less guilty buying it for the bottle alone.

Or not.

Ok, so let’s talk about the bottle first because it really is an important part of this review. Too Faced squeezed every element of girly into this bottle. It’s gold, pink, and has roses…I mean, pure princess joy here. The fragrance is available in a single 3.4 oz size for $118 (on sale for $89) and comes with a deluxe size of Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara. It comes in a gorgeous pink box with a pretty bow and rose border. Inside the box has a rose lining. I mean, the box is as sweet as the bottle!

The bottle, wow, the bottle. I happen to be someone that keeps pretty things on my vanity. I collect old Victorian vanity sets and I’ll switch them up seasonally and decorate them with my prettiest perfumes, makeup, and beauty. This bottle obviously now has a starring appearance on my vanity. It has a decent weight to it and is a circular design with a pink face plate that resembles the case of the mascara which reads, “Too Faced Better Than Sex”. I could have probably done without the “Better Than Sex” thing but eh, it’s still actually very pretty. The top of the barrel has a gold plate with a border that has a pretty bow at the center and pink resin hearts. This design is at the back of the bottle as well and two floral borders are joined at the sides of the bottle by a lion head knocker. The lion is a little unusual as it’s not one we’ve seen used in Too Faced products before but it still somehow works here. To complete the bottle there’s a large clear pink crystal cap. Truly the bottle brings me a little bit of joy looking at it. I’m a girly girl and this really appeals to that side of me!

Now, if the packaging didn’t grab you and you just want to hear more about the fragrance allow me to share my thoughts.

It’s not better than sex.

I wish Too Faced would stop trying to sell me beauty they market as better than sex.

That being said, the scent is lovely and has a old Hollywood glam feel. It reminds me a bit of Dianne Brill Eau de Parfum but without the sexy smokiness. It’s very light, it’s very airy, and it’s not at all what I expected it to smell like. It’s a bit sweet with light floral notes and a dry down that has a touch of warmth.

The initial top notes are passionfruit, lychee, fuzzy peach, and citrus. I get none of the peach not the passionfruit on the first mist but I get the tang almost sour note of lychee and citrus but it disappears quickly and is overtaken by a wave of musk and amber. My nose is either not picking it up or it’s simply not there but I’m getting any of the floral notes that include magnolia, jasmine, vanilla orchid, or black rose. Almost immediately upon misting it I get a little twang of citrus and lychee followed immediately by a musky amber. It’s an unusual scent as you do get some sweetness in the background with this warm spicy element that gives it a very vintage feel! It’s quite lovely in its simplicity. When I noticed it contained patchouli I was, of course, naturally scared to try it but it’s really barely noticeable in the scent! The spicy amber element is dominant upon drying down. It wears quite well with excellent sillage. It’s surprisingly light yet also, strong enough to last through the day so you can smell it well into a few hours of wear.

Too Faced Better Than Sex Eau de Parfum is very interesting. I wouldn’t dare call it unique but I would go so far as to say it’s a very pleasant, lightweight fragrance that has an old glam Hollywood feel. It’s very pretty in a non-intrusive way yet managed to linger in the air and on your body for hours upon hours making itself known but not being annoying! I’d love to see Too Faced do more fragrances as this wasn’t half bad.

speaking of perfume, I was at Ulta on saturday to purchase one of the 50% off IT cosmetics brushes, and I tried the new Billie Elish Fragrance and thought of you. I apologize if you have already addressed this in a previous post, but it is definitely a gourmand fragrance of vanilla, and I know you love a good gourmand perfume, and I bet you would really like this one. I sprayed it on one of the Ulta paper strips and it lasted all day, but I sprayed it on my wrist and the scent did not even last an hour, but I did not apply alot of it. If you have not tried it I strongly recommend it, plus the bottle is so distinctive and would look so pretty on a dressing table.

How interesting! On me it’s very fruity-floral, and I keep hoping more of the base notes will come out. Maybe if I let it age a bit more!

I used it once initially and allowed it to macerate for about a month and a half and felt it came off warmer after that!
