3 stars out of 5

Cerave Hydrating Foaming Oil Cleanser ($17.99) is a new lightweight foaming cleansing oil that can be used on face or body to remove makeup, dirt, and oil without stripping skin. As with all Cerave products this contains a hydrating mix of ceramides.

I was intrigued by this as I like cleansing oils but this had a little bit of perk that it was a cleansing oil that transformed to a foaming lather! Interesting right? I purchased it quickly enough but I could tell right off from promo images that it wasn’t a cleansing oil at all.

Cerave Hydrating Foaming Oil Cleanser is available in a 8, 12, and 19 oz bottle with prices ranging from $15.99-$19.99. An 8 oz bottle is plenty if you have plans to use this on your face only. I got the 12 oz and it’s super huge and should last me a while. I have absolutely no plans to use it on my bottle! I’ll tell you why shortly. I absolutely love this but I did give it three stars versus five and there’s a few reasons why I did that.

This formula is a lightweight gel-like consistency that resembles any foaming facial wash you have. The texture is not that of an oil nor does it feel oily on skin. I think it’s probably a little misleading to call it a “foaming oil cleanser”. It’s just your standard gel facial wash but with a bit of a thinner, runnier formula compared to others I own and have tried. Apparently it contains squalane but that’s not listed on the bottle. Another thing to take note of is it says to void direct contact with eyes. Truly, I hate that warning on the back of facial cleansers because I find it very difficult not to wash around my eye area. I did use it near my eyes and I can say it didn’t burn but the warning gets me every single time.

Unlike a traditional cleansing oil that’s meant to be used on dry skin you’ll be using with on wet skin and massaging in. It creates very, very, very little lather (this is why I said above I’d likely never use it on my body! I like a body wash or shower gel that creates a rich, foaming lather! This fails at that!). As per the bottle it’s for dry or very dry skin but I think it’s perfectly gentle enough to use across any skin type. It definitely will not remove hardcore makeup in my opinion (trust me I’ve tried).

So, yeah, I guess that was all negative yet above I said I loved it. Why do I love it? It’s the perfect companion in a double cleanse. It isn’t hydrating but also, it isn’t stripping. You can pour a bottle of this on your face and you’ll come out of as smooth as a baby. It just doesn’t make me tight or dry after using it. Very non-stripping. I’ve been using it along with a cleansing balm or cleansing oil! I simply do all my hardcore removal with an oil or a balm and do my final cleanse with some of this. It’s perfect for that reason.

Sadly, on its own Cerave Hydrating Foaming Oil Cleanser isn’t something you’ll want to use exclusively to remove your makeup but it’s a damn fine pick if you double cleanse! All in all, a fairly basic cleanser that isn’t really an oil which doesn’t strip nor dry out skin!

Where to buy

Amazon Ulta Walmart

Cerave Hydrating Foaming Oil Cleanser is a new “foaming oil cleanser” that recently launched to the permanent Cerave Collection. This is a lightweight gel formula and not an oil that produces a very, very light lather. It contains no fragrance and rinses clean away without stripping or drying out skin. In my experience using it it worked best in a double cleanse routine as if you wear a good deal of makeup this won’t work to get it all off. It works best when used in conjunction with a cleansing balm, cleansing oil, or other facial cleansers.

Aqua / Water / Eau, Glycerin, Peg-200 Hydrogenated Glyceryl Palmate, Coco-Betaine, Disodium Cocoyl Glutamate, Peg-120 Methyl Glucose Dioleate, Polysorbate 20, Peg-7 Glyceryl Cocoate, Squalane, Ceramide Np, Ceramide Ap, Ceramide Eop, Carbomer, Triethyl Citrate, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Hydroxide, Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate, Sodium Benzoate, Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate, Sodium Hyaluronate, Cholesterol, Citric Acid, Capryloyl Glycine, Hydroxyacetophenone, Caprylyl Glycol, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate, Phytosphingosine, Xanthan Gum, Benzoic Acid, Peg-150 Pentaerythrityl Tetrastearate, Ppg-5-Ceteth-20, Peg-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides.

I’m really curious about the LRP one. I really love the Torlane line.
I haven’t had the best of luck with the cerave line. Thank you for the review

Review shortly on that one 🙂 Cerave can be hit or miss! Of course, my pleasure!

Well, poop. I was hoping this would really be what it claimed to be, a foaming oil. But it’s just ‘nuther lightly foaming cleanser. blah. Thanks as always for the honest review Muse! I always appreciate your honest opinions on products- that’s a rare thing anymore with all the shills, er, influencers out there.

This’ll be a hard pass for me.

    • Isabella Muse

naa! Just a lightweight gel! Very runny. But not an oil! I was excited for it to be an oil too! LOL I hear you on shills! I shake my head sometimes at what people try to sell me on Tiktok. And sadly, I buy into some of it and end up disappointed 🙁 But thank you, it’s flattering to hear you trust me! This is actually if you double cleanse! I love it for that. But as a solo cleanser, mehhh just doesn’t cut it.

I don’t double cleanse because (a) im too lazy (b) my skin doesn’t really like it and (c) I think a single cleanser, one that’s properly formulated, should be able to do the trick and clean my skin without eating off my face.

Looking forward to your review of the LRP one!

What a shame that it wasn’t an oil! I had high hopes for a one and done. Ugh! Thank you for your review.

    • Isabella Muse

My pleasure! Sadly, not for me. I feel like I need a lot more to get my makeup off!

How does this compare to the Fresh Soy Face Cleanser? The larger size Fresh currently sells looks like a scam. I do not believe it’s 400ml and the bottle isn’t even full so I’m back to looking for an affordable replacement for my sensitive skin.

different textures, this is very runny in comparison and not as thick! But should do great with sensitive skin! Very gentle in my experience!
