Walgreens Set to Close Stores And It Doesn’t Surprise Me

I’m not terribly shocked hearing the news that Walgreens is closing 2,150 stores out of 8,600 locations in the USA. Yup, your local Walgreens may be under the chopping block. According to reports, the closures are due to underperforming stores. They aim to close stores that may be struggling with heavy theft or those that are underperforming in sales. The kicker? They said they’ll consider closing even more stores if things don’t improve. Walgreens shares fell 20% and inflation has taken a big bite out of their regular line of business as well as pharmacy sales.

Walgreens reps discuss how shoppers have been selection and price-sensitive about their purchases. This irony is somewhat funny considering how bloated the prices are at both Walgreens and CVS. I can buy some deo at Target for say $4.99 and I go to my local Walgreens and it’s like $7.99. Walgreens prices are insane to me on everyday essentials like toothpaste, deo, body wash, etc…! And let’s not discuss the makeup prices. Yes, there are plenty of sales and coupons but when you’re running low on toilet paper or deo and need it right away shelling out for it at Walgreens just isn’t it. Confession time but I haven’t shopped beauty or even essentials at Walgreens and CVS in ages. And I’m not on any meds so need to use their pharmacy and even when I do need a z pack when I have a cold I normally head to my local pharmacy as not only is the service better but I’m helping a small business.

Apparently back in May Walgreens slashed prices on over a 1,000 items to entice shoppers into the store. I’m not sure exactly what those items are but if you shop there to shout out in the comments if you noticed things being a bit cheaper at your store. But in doing this Walgreens has stated it hurts their profitability. In order to gain profits they stated they’d be removing eight national brands and replacing those brands with their own house brands. They didn’t specifically state which brands but only said they’d be ones in the health and wellness categories. Call a snob but I don’t always like house brands as feel like they aren’t the same as brand names. Don’t get me wrong some are good but many aren’t so great.

As I said above Walgreens closing all these stores comes as no great surprise. I think their prices are grossly high compared to other stores especially in the beauty department (Sorry, but I’m not paying near $15 or more for drugstore mascara!). Everyone wants a good deal and Walgreens is sadly, not the place you’ll find it.

What do you think of Walgreens closings?

Sorry, I’m a little confused by the title and picture…does Walmart own Walgreens?

Your header says Walmart but you ment Walgreens. But yeah, their prices are high and the rewards aren’t great.

    • Isabella Muse

Yup! Sorry typo! And yessss prices are insane and the rewards really take time (and money) to accumulate any real savings!

Your headline says Walmart, but your article is about Walgreens.

I am not sad… I haven’t set foot in a Walgreen’s since they permitted pharmacists to refuse filling prescriptions based on their ‘religious’ objections to women’s personal autonomy. I only wish they would ask me why I’ve boycotted them! I’d be glad to give them an earful.

I think the first complaint was in 2018! Not sure if I can post a link here but if you search for “walgreen’s pharmacists refuse prescriptions” a ton will pop up about pharmacists refusing to fill RX for mifepristone and birth control. I respect and agree with the refusal to fill opioids without physician verification but the moral objection claim here is unacceptable IMO.

Walgreens has always been an “only if absolutely necessary” store for me and it’s usually something pharmacy related for my parents. They have all the stuff my elderly parents need on the occasions I go in one. I do like to browse the beauty dept but the prices are ridiculously high. Their execs are just now noticing this?

Maybe if they didn’t have one on every corner, I can’t tell you how many intersections I drive through and there are two Walgreens right across the street from each other. Makes you wonder how they have stayed in business this long!

I’m not surprised. I stopped shopping at Walgreens after one incident where the price charged at the register was higher than the price marked! Apparently they did this enough in Missouri to get sued for consumer deception back in 2013.

Two Walgreens already have closed in my area a few months ago. Could be more on the other sides of town I don’t know about. I was told they stopped taking some forms of insurance a few years ago. That started the downward slide. Yes, the prices are too high but also, the rewards program is confusing. They are on their third version. I had to chat with customer service to get a few points back. But give up because points expired without me getting the emails about it. I go to Walgreens when the other stores run out of something needed/wanted. There was a good sale on haircare a while back.

If you live in certain neighborhoods Walgreens would do this strange thing. When customers would go into the cosmetic, deodorant or baby aisle an intercom message would go out. ” Customer in (specified aisle) needs assistance”. A code for watch them they might be stealing. Interesting enough that is one of the stores that closed. I chose CVS to get vacated.

As for CVS I noticed pricing is a mixed bag. Some items are the same, some are lower while others are higher. With an extra care card and coupons to stack. I can get a deal there, but I have to be strategic. You are right I needed right now stuff is better bought at everyday low-priced stores. It’s a shock to see a store that was opened just yesterday just suddenly gone but not surprised it’s happening.
