Drugstore Makeup Hits and Misses for Spring 2017

It was a slow Fall for Drugstore makeup but I can’t say the same for Spring 2017. There are a lot of brand new makeup, beauty, and skincare picks at the drugstore this month and many are very good but with the good there’s always the bad too.

Here’s a list of some of the latest drugstore makeup hits and misses for Spring 2017.

See if you agree with them!

Milani Retouch + Base Light-Lifting Concealer
Milani’s newest concealer is delightfully creamy and quite hydrating but sadly, it seems to sheer away during the blend process. A tad more pigment would make this inexpensive concealer a hit with me! MISS it!

Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hydrating Tint
Got good skin already? Neutrogena’s new sheer hydrating tint is for you. This will make you already great skin look better by evening your skin tone, brightening, and leaving you with flawless, gorgeous skin! Definitely a HIT!

Beauty 360 Gentle Eye Makeup Remover
CVS’s Beauty 360 Gentle Eye Makeup Remover is now available in a whooping 11 oz size. This compelled me to purchase it because not only do I hate spending big bucks on eye makeup remover but I also hate having to replace it so often. Why the 4 oz sizes? It’s something we use daily why isn’t everyone jumping on board to create a larger size of eye makeup remover? Needless to say not only was I pleased with the price and formula of Beauty 360 Gentle Eye Makeup Remover but the 11 oz size made it truly a HIT with me!

Rimmel MagnifEyes Eyeshadow Contouring Palette
I think we can all agree that we likely have plenty of nude eyeshadow palettes are this point. But hey, don’t you find yourself still purchasing more of them? Rimmel’s new palettes have 12 gorgeous shades inside but sadly, the formula failed to wow me which made this one a MISS!

Maybelline Inti-Matte Nudes Lipstick
Inti-Matte Lipstick is currently taking the Internet by storm because lord knows we all love a good nude lipstick not to mention a cheap one. Considering Maybelline’s fairly good track record with their Color Sensational Lipstick Collection I felt like I’d be mighty pleased with the Inti-Matte Nudes but sadly, this formula applied patchy, fell into my natural lip lines, and ended up aging my lips. Thanks but no thanks! This was a MISS!

Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hydrating Concealer
Neutrogena’s new concealer is creamy, dreamy, easy to blend, and easy to apply. Lord knows we need more concealers like this at the drugstore. An instant HIT!

Physicians Formula Mineral Wear Cushion Correct + Primer Duo
Need to brighten up? Need to correct redness or darkness? Physicians Formula got you covered, literally, with their new cushion compact that contains not one shade of corrector but two! I like this unique duo a lot and thought it was worth a try! HIT!

Maybelline Baby Lips Color Balm Crayon
I admit Maybelline Baby Lips Color Balm Crayon weren’t on my hit list. I felt for sure they’d be the average, sheer Baby Lips we all know and are somehow addicted to collecting. Turns out Maybelline had something else in store for these. These are SUPER pigmented with a lovely lightweight texture! Not to mention they are cheap as chips! Loves ’em! Total HIT!

Burts Bees Flavor Crystals Lip Balm
Burt’s Bee’s new Crystal Lip Balm sounds interesting enough! A burst of fruity flavor in every application. Turns out these are pretty basic a little heavy for a lip balm. MISS ’em!

LOreal Micellar Cleansing Water
Love Garnier’s Cleansing Water? Stick with it because L’Oreal’s new Micellar formula doesn’t bring anything awesome to the table. This one failed to wow me and left behind makeup after a cleansing. I’d call it a MISS.

Hard Candy Glamoflauge Mix”in Pigment Makeup Drops
Looking for lightweight, flawless coverage? Hard Candy’s new Mix-in Pigment Drops are all that! You can mix these in with your fav moisturizer or primer but if I’m honest, a little drop of two blended on my face is all I need to look fresh and amazing. No mixing required! Love the price, love the finish, love these! HIT!

Palmers Facial Cleansing oil is now my HG cleanser. It has replaced by Clinique cleanser. It’s so gentle and it removes all my makeup and doesn’t make my face tight.

Wet n Wilds Mega Plush Max mascara is better than my Marc Jacobs mascara,

I’d absolutely would LOVE everyone’s opinion on the best long lasting lipsticks (stains too!) & the best long lasting foundations in the lightest shades (I live near the Gulf in Texas…humid!!!!) ….. which I have yet to find on your website!!
Please tell me we can jump start this!
Thank you for your time & devotion! 😉

      Hi Kim
      It’s not drugstore
Clarins Everlasting Matte in shade 103 ivory is wonderful!!! I prefer a Matte finish. I’m test during Estée Lauder’s /double wear liquid foundation in shade 1N1 ivory nude. This shade is the lightest even though site says cool Bone is lighter; it’s not go for the 1n1.

Lips- Colourpop Matte is Long lasting, but came be drying. Their Ultra /satin lip has a pretty good staying power and is comfortable to wear. /Stila’s liquid lip last long on me as well.

You tube thataylaa is fair and has a playlist of her favorite fair/pale foundations.

      Hope this helps! 😉

Drugstore or mid-range? (like Mac, and brands from sephora/ulta)
Estee lauder double wear foundation is long lasting and good range of shades. You can get a 10 day free sample at their makeup counter. I’m in the same climate and it lasts in the humidity. Also I have oily skin and redness that I like to cover.
For long lasting lipsticks your best bet are liquid matte lipsticks and there’s like a million of them out there in every price range. At the drugstore the milani, wet n wild and NYX liquid mattes are good!

      • Kim

Thank you, Lorraine!!! I’ve tried Estee Lauder DOuble Wear … more breakouts & doesn’t stay on nicely at all…. I’ve tried SO many brands…. I am currently wearing Tarte Cream Powder foundation with a sponge… so far its good but can’t find the right color yet no breakouts with this!

        • Kim

p.s. Since I’m always drinking water & a few kisses….. I find that Tarte & Stila liquid matte lipsticks are like licking crayons off my lips!!! That’s why I asked about lipsticks that stay on beautifully!

I just want to mention how much I love this post! Now I know what to keep an eye out for next time I hit up the drugstore! I like this “roundup” where you list products with a mini review then let us know whether it’s a Hit or Miss. Can I suggest this kind of post seasonally? Maybe a drugstore version and a high end version?? And thank you so much! I really enjoy reading your blog posts and appreciate the time you put into giving your honest opinion on all these beauty products!!!

    • Isabella Muse

Thank you!! 🙂 I’m so glad to hear. I actually do these monthly. If you look under the hit/miss category you’ll find the older ones I’ve done 😀 Aw thank you so so much! I’m so glad you feel that way!

  • Kirsten

Yes these monthly hit/miss for drugstore products are the best! It isn’t as bad as premium products when the drugstore ones don’t work out, BUT it is great to know the good, the bad, and the ugly when my budget is super thin. Saves me time which is a coveted commodity for me. Thanks!
