Pretty Vulgar Under Cover Concealer Review & Swatches

Pretty Vulgar Under Cover Concealer is one of those concealer formulas you’ll reach for on days you aren’t wanting to look completely perfect. Personally, when I’m going for completely perfect I haul on the big guns and use a pigmented concealer like Tarte’s Shape Tape but on weekend’s when I’m just chilling at brunch with friends I use something more sheerer and natural under my eyes.

Pretty Vulgar Under Cover Concealer is one of those I don’t care how I look concealers that will whisk away some imperfections but not all of them. It’s also the type of product that you love the formula on but it has quirks which makes it less than perfect and has you wishing it was perfect.

As you know Pretty Vulgar is a new line of cosmetics that popped up at Sephora.com recently. There’s honestly not a lot known about the brand! If you head onto their website they have a back story about how a group of makeup artists created it but to me it feels more like a start up brand that Seed Beauty funded. I mean, I’d personally expect something MAC or Make Up For Ever-like from makeup artists and not something as cutesy as Pretty Vulgar. None the less, the packaging slayed me and I instantly got on board with purchasing up a few of their items and of course, like any good concealer junkie one of the first things to land in my cart was the Under Cover Concealer which is available in six shade selections for $25 each (0.14 oz).

Under Cover Concealer is probably the least fancy packaging in the Pretty Vulgar Cosmetics line and most of the beauty would come from the box it comes in which is decorated with the brand’s bird elem and a little keyhole lock. The actually concealer barrel is rather plain but still has an elegant rose gold top and accents. I purchased the shade Tip Toe Over the Line my first time out of the gate but ended up returning it for the light shade called Veil of Secrecy. It seems the shades run a smidge lighter so you might want to go a shade lighter when purchasing online.

This is toted as a lightweight, velvety concealer to cover up problem areas with a gel serum formulation. I rarely use concealer on my face so, of course, I started out application under my eyes as soon as I got it. One of the first things that deserves mentioning is the fact it does have a rather paint or Sharpie marker-like scent that’s lighter than Tarte’s Rainforest of the Sea Aquacealer but still quite noticeable. I admit when they said “gel serum concealer” I was a little worried it would be a formula like the Sephora Bright Future Gel Serum Concealer which was not to liking at all. But turns out this is a wonderfully creamy and easy to blend texture. It’s quite hydrating as well so, my drier eyes seemed to like it a lot. The pigmentation seemed excellent too on a swatch but this is where things go downhill…..After I applied a generous amount under my eyes and started to blend I noticed that the formula got sheerer and sheerer. I decided to build a bit more. I tend to not like to build concealer. I go for the big application during the first application so, I don’t have to apply more because it tends to get cakey when I layer. I applied quite a bit at first but unfortunately it sheers away as I blended. I applied more but sadly, it didn’t really help the issue.

So, here’s the good news….

This little gem brightens up the eye area and it’s super easy to apply. The bad news is it seems to crease at around the six hour mark and it isn’t exactly all day wear not to mention it smells funky and sheers out a good deal so, if you have heavy duty dark circles and other imperfections it’s likely not going to conceal them. If you have pretty minor issues this might do an ok job concealing them or if you’re going for a more natural look this is a good concealer. I don’t regret the purchase as I’ll use it for a quick swipe and go concealer when I’m not applying a ton of makeup and I’m not looking to look completely picture perfect flawless.

But if you’re looking for perfection, sadly, Pretty Vulgar Under Cover Concealer doesn’t have your back.

Pretty Vulgar Under Cover Concealer is available now at sephora.com.

Slightly off topic but I recently have heard from some bloggers and vloggers that concealer makes a better eye shadow primer than eye shadow primer. What say you?

I’ve done it! I used to apply Benefit Boi-ing all over my lids as a primer. I wouldn’t say it works perfectly but it does brighten the area up nicely. I think the silicones in a primer formula act better to lock shadow in though. Some concealers are a little too emollient to hold eyeshadow in place and you end up with one big crease in the middle of your lid as the day progresses.
