Let’s Chat How Unattainable Ulta Diamond Rewards Might Be

As you already know Ulta has launched a new tier in their Ultamate Rewards Program for 2018 which is Diamond. Diamond Status gets us something we have wanted from Ulta for a very, very long time! Free shipping! Oh my god everyone throw their hands in the air and scream in joy. There are days, like today for example, when I just want one item from Ulta. This morning I woke up, noticed that MAC Studio Waterweight Concealer launched on Ulta’s site, and I instantly needed it. Currently New York is being hit by a snow bomb whatever the hell that is so, I’m not venturing out to Ulta to see if they have it in store and really, since the item is so new I probably won’t see it mid-month or so at my local Ulta. Hopefully Nordstrom or MAC stores get it but I really just felt compelled to buy it right away online. But of course, Ulta’s shipping limit sucks. You have to spend $50 to get free shipping and since the concealer is only half way there I felt compelled to add more stuff into my cart to get free shipping.

This is where things get tricky because 1. you either end up buying the one item and being extorted for a $6-$7 bucks to ship that one tiny item that you know damn well doesn’t cost that much to ship or 2. you head into a downward spiral of buying stuff you don’t need and checking out with $100+ dollars versus the mere $50 you need to get free shipping.

Well, now you don’t have to worry! If you reach Ulta Diamond Reward status you my dear friend get free shipping on orders of $25 or more. Well, mmm ok. This is where Sephora actually got things right and Ulta got it terribly wrong. This is rare as typically Sephora is the money grabber and Ulta is all about giving back.

You see Ulta Diamond Rewards MIGHT just prove to be an unattainable goal for many.

Gulp, can’t believe I’m saying this but I probably won’t reach Diamond status and I’d be surprised if I did. I am a Platinum Member which means I’ve spent $450 or over at Ulta this year. I order from their website about four to five times a year perhaps even a little more. I tend to take advantage of their 20% off coupon codes when they come around but I’m not by any means an Ulta shopper. A majority of my money ends up at Sephora because they carry a lot more brands than Ulta does. Even though Ulta has added many, many brands to their line up this year such as MAC, NARS, and more I still tend to migrate more to Sephora.

Ulta without any doubt has a great cash back rewards program and is very generous with coupons unlike Sephora who has a rather crummy reward system. Those who have Rouge Status are continuously disappointed with Sephora’s lack of rewards for those who spend a good deal of cash at their store each year.

However, I find reaching Rouge Status a lot easier at Sephora simply because I am buying more high-end beauty, fragrance, and skincare at Sephora versus Ulta. What does that mean!? Well, reaching $1000 to become Rouge just seems easier due to the prices of items I am purchasing at Sephora. Also, Sephora gives 2-Day Shipping without a minimum on any item. And if you’re not Rouge? No problem! You can purchase a $10 Flash Subscription and get free 2-day shipping on any item all through the year.

Now Ulta, jumped the gun big time. From Platinum with a $450 goal they jumped to Diamond and everyone was holding their breath in anticipation about what Diamond Rewards would be and how much you’d have to spend to get there! If you don’t know yet you have to spend $1200 bucks to get to Diamond Status.

PHEW!

That’s a lot of money to spend at Ulta because I’m not buying as many prestigious items at their store as I do at Sephora. Looking over my purchases a majority of the brands I buy at Ulta are NYX, Burt’s Bees, Garnier, Maybelline, Ulta Brand, and other lower-end beauty products. I do not use their salon services nor do I buy many high-end items from them aside from the occasional fragrance. I think it’ll be mighty tough for me to reach the $1200 tier with my spending habits but we shall see how I do this year as I THINK I’d be surprised if I did reach Diamond Status.

Now, the thing that annoys me most about Diamond Status is the fact you actually don’t get free shipping until you send $25. Burp, meh. Couldn’t they just give you free shipping on any item like Sephora?! I thought that $25 cap was kind of crappy. I’m sure you can easily reach $25 no problem but why bother with a cap at all? Sephora doesn’t, neither should they especially since you’re spending $200 more to reach Diamond Status versus Rouge.

Other benefits include 1.5/50% faster cash rewards and $25 reward card for beauty services as well as all the benefits you have already with Platinum which is points never expiring, birthday gift, etc..

Ulta still has one of the best reward systems around with plenty of generous coupons however, they might have jumped the gun with Diamond Rewards. I think it needs to be a bit more reasonable for the consumers that shop there which are typically budget shoppers looking to score a deal. I spend a good deal on beauty, makeup, skincare, and fragrance yearly but I feel like the $1200 tier might be unattainable for me.

How about you?

Do you think you’ll reach Ulta Diamond Rewards Status?

Do you think they could have done better with this tier?

Or are you quite happy with these benefits?

Do share!

Nope. Free shipping and a $25 beauty services reward doesn’t seem worth the price of admission!

  • Kay

While I am excited about improvements to their program, which is amazing already, this does seem unattainable. What could I possibly have left to buy with rewards points if I’ve already spent 1200$? And also the payoff doesn’t seem exciting enough to strive for that next level. I’m happy being platinum as long as they don’t change a thing!

    • Isabella Muse

Likewise! The improvements are nice but 1200 seems way high!!!!!!! and I agree! I’m cool with platinum and hopefully they don’t change anything about it!

  • chibi639

Um….wth?? $1200!? This is some BS. I was thinking it would be more along the lines of $800 – $1000 plus free shipping and maybe better b-day perks. But I agree with all your very valid points. Unless Ulta starts pulling in some more higher end and luxury brands, I’m never going to hit the diamond mark. Though I can’t say I’d feel disappointed just maintaining my platinum status. I’m lucky enough to live and work by Ultas, so I can just hop in for small item purchases.

    • Isabella Muse

right? It’s really high! How did they jump from $450 at platinum to $1200 at diamond!? What!? It’s hard work reaching $1200 at Ulta. I don’t use their salon nor do I buy anything super high-end there. I dunno if I can spend $1200 on lower end brands since Ulta’s drugstore brand pricing is pretty high! I’ll stick to platinum!

  • Carol

Ok so here are my thoughts: I was so excited when this was announced because I thought for sure it would be this awesome program with free shipping. I also thought the threshold wouldn’t be that high. I figured perhaps they would double their platinum and make the threshold $900, BUT offer free shipping on any order, like Sephora does with Rouge. Plus, I figured they would try to one-up Sephora’s $1,000 threshold and do $900. When I saw $1,200 and free shipping at $25 it was a big let down. There is no way I will achieve this and I spend a lot at Ulta, however, half their store is drugstore makeup so price-wise you are buying less expensive items more often. Plus the $25 gift card is for a service and I don’t do any salon services at Ulta so that isn’t really an incentive for me either. So, to sum up, I am extremely disappointed and also I was quite surprised to find out the the sales associates knew nothing about this. I was at Ulta on 12/30 and asked them if they had the inside scoop and they didn’t know anything about it. When I asked if they were serious or just saying that because they weren’t allowed to divulge the details they replied that they were indeed serious and did not hear about this. Also, I really think the threshold should be $800 maximum. Even $800 is a lot but it could be attainable by some people. $1,200 is not attainable for the average person much less a beauty junkie such as myself.

    • Isabella Muse

likewise on all your points especially the $25 salon service one. I don’t use their services and the $25 is a waste if I reached the $1200 mark. I’d have appreciated a $25 reward for any in store purchase better!

  • Susan

I barely reach Platinum and may not this year, because I hope to spend less. So $1200 is a huge fat NO. And really, at that level they couldn’t give people free shipping on every order? From what I’ve read on Facebook and other sites, no one likes this new level.

    • Isabella Muse

I do ok with Platnium, I find it easy enough to reach the $450 but $1200? that’s a huge jump from $450. Why even go that high when their consumers are mostly drugstore/beauty budget shoppers!? and yes, free shipping for all seems logical to me!

  • Linda Whitener

Ulta certainly could have done a better job on this. I’m an Ulta shopper, a platinum member, and I might even reach that $1200 level – but $450 to $1200 is one helluva jump. Totally agree re: free shipping, too.

  • Abbey W.

I buy all my family’s hair products at Ulta, and we have LOTS of hair. I have already spent $100 this year on shampoo and conditioner. I just may reach it. I also really try to buy everything I can from Ulta rather than Sephora. Anything from Clinique, It Cosmetics, etc. I always try to get from Ulta. So maybe I will reach it. “♀️

    • Isabella Muse

you’re def lucky if you can! I don’t typically buy haircare from them nor much skincare or even fragrance so I’m out I think :-/

  • Kara

If Ulta was smart they would have made this new status attainable at $1K per year to directly compete with Sephora. If they were super savvy, they would have made it even more attractive and made it around the $800-ish mark, especially since you still have to spend $25 to get free shipping as Diamond (Sephora wins there because they don’t require a minimum purchase for free Rouge/Flash shipping). Even though I can’t get as many of the prestige brands that I can at Sephora, I might be inclined to search for alternatives at Ulta just to achieve Diamond and overall accrue more points which in turn equates to money off. I still love Ulta and will continue to shop there, but I am disappointed with how they structured this.

    • Isabella Muse

$800 or even $850 makes it not only attractive but in direct competition with Sephora! even if they made you spend $25 for free shipping it would still be an excellent deal!

  • Maria

To reach $1200 to get free shipping is crazy. Even when I spend $50 just for free shipping, I end up buying stuff I do not need like nail files, cotton balls, etc. I am already platinum for the entire year of 2018. I guess this does not qualify for free shipping. Ulta is not giving us any extra deals. Plus they use UPs smart post to ship.

  • Colleen

I was really surprised that Diamond was $1200 . I’m not getting there & I dont want to spend that much at ulta. I love ulta for their cash back reward program & their mix of high and low end. No free shipping for the Diamond level is just an insult.

  • Lala

Yeah that’s insane! If I’ve already spent $1,200, I still have to spend $25 each time to get free shipping?! I can get free shipping with a $25 purchase on google express.

  • Mary Brenner

I think it’s total B.S. I’m not even going to remain platinum this year since I have quit using their salon. I am pretty much gonna try and buy nothing other than new mascara and skincare this year I have SO MUCH stuff it’s embarrassing. I am going to buy myself a fragrance I want at Sephora this month to celebrate my birthday and that will push me into Rouge territory with them but I won’t stay there because I have got to get the hoard under control!!

  • Katie

I didn’t reach Rouge or Platinum status after 2017. I lost my job and had to prioritize beauty purchases to the necessary items and less wants. I feel bad about this but then I don’t. The only thing I really used with Rouge was the free shipping – don’t go to the events, don’t get makeovers, and only called the hotline once. Plus I have so much makeup that will never get all used up before I die so I’m being pickier about what I do buy. I think being a VIB is good enough for me as I’ll pay the $10 for Flash Shipping! Plus, being Rouge doesn’t guarantee the good perks from the Rewards Bizarre so what is the point. I agree with everyone’s comments about Ulta. I tend to buy less there because of brand selection and because if the item is at Sephora, I buy from there because I need more points. Bottom line, I will never reach diamond status!

    • Isabella Muse

honestly, the only benefit I get from Rouge is free shipping but that’s not special as for ten bucks I can get flash shipping. So yeah, you shouldn’t feel left out/or like you’re missing something at all especially since you lost your job, that’s hard!

  • Jordana

I agree that I’d prefer free shipping instead of a higher point accrual rate – with the credit card anyway, I have more points than I know what to do with! But a lot of people complain that there aren’t enough Sephora Rouge events and benefits, and I suspect that’s because there are so many of us and it’s not as exclusive as it was intended to be. If Ulta succeeds in having something that’s only available for a small tier, well, then it may not mean much for the typical consumer, but it could make those who reach Diamond satisfied. The “budget” shoppers can still think of Platinum as a high end benefit; it’s not as if it lost anything. Maybe they are trying to attract more people to the salon — a few salon services can make a dent in that total. And, yes, I think I qualified based on last year’s purchases – hoping to see that reflected.

  • Janessa

Ohhh wow… that’s very disappointing. I was about $100 short of qualifying for rouge in 2017 (I was in 2015 & 2016) and completely agree that there is no way i’ll ever reach platinum at Ulta. I’ve gotten good at targeted shopping with them – I bought the Naked Heat palette with a gift card from Christmas and got 5x the points on it and am strategic about the 20% off coupons. My favorite thing is when I have the max Ulta rewards banked up AND a 20% off coupon – this girl does some black out shopping lol. But it’s safe to say that the majority of my prestige purchases will happen at Sephora.

  • StellaDiva

Well I used to spend at least $400 a year on the benefit brow bar so if someone also got lip and chin done I would say it’s obtainable.

  • Christina

Yup, I’ll never reach Diamond (can’t even make it to Platinum) because the bulk of my purchases tend to be high end, and if I want drugstore, I just go to Target usually. I usually buy just hair care from Ulta, but even my favourite mask is only $24, so I still wouldn’t get free shipping at the Diamond level. Sephora may have a crummy rewards program, but it’s where I buy the bulk of my makeup and skincare, and I don’t see myself switching over to Ulta anytime soon.

  • Cindy

It’s SO lame!! I’m definitely an Ulta shopper over Sephora because 1) I’m all about getting $$ back to get stuff for FREE and 2) Sephora has pissed me off with customer service issues that could fill up a phone book (if anyone knows what that is anymore, LOL!). However, I do very well with Platinum. I mostly buy when they have 3x, 5x, & the once a year 10x points. I save up the points until the end of the year and have a holiday frenzy for FREE. Ulta has sales on things and better deals throughout the year. I mostly don’t have a problem making $50 orders for free shipping, and it’s not worth $1200 to get free shipping on a $25 order. They are also creating a situation where some people might order for $50 and return the items they don’t need. How does that help Ulta or the shoppers? I read somewhere that the 1.5 points per $1 only adds up to $10 more per year, and I don’t use their salon so I don’t need the $25 card. Ulta obviously didn’t listen to their customers or do any research before they came out with this level. Not well-thought out at all.

    • Isabella Muse

lol hmm phone book I think I remember those I think! I agree that Ulta has the better deals/money back/etc but there are so many brands they don’t carry that Sephora does sad sigh! I agree, I’m surprised at Ulta, they typically put a lot of effort into their promotions and rewards, this one was a fail though!

      • Cindy

The birthday gift changes every 3 months. On your birthday (god forbid they should send it a minute early) Platinum members get a coupon for the free birthday gift and a $10 coupon good on anything including prestige & fragrance. If you aren’t Platinum you get the birthday gift but not the $10. Last year I got a cute NYX eyeshadow palette. One year I got a full-size Urban Decay Midnight Cowboy eyeshadow, which is my go-to color so I was thrilled. In your birthday month Platinum members get 2x points on everything, and that stacks with other point offers so you can really make $$$$ in points. My birthday month is the same month that they offer the 10x points and the 2x points stacks on that. If there are any other 5x point offers on specific brands those stack too. This is the part of the program I hope they don’t change!!

        • Randi MacDonald

I’m not platinum and I received 2x the points during my bday month. Platinum gets 5x the points.

          • Cindy

Nope, check the website. Maybe everyone gets 2x points in the birthday month, but never 5x unless it’s an offer for a specific product/brand.

  • Kimmwc03

Such a let down. I’m not even going to try for Diamond. Platinum was always easy for me to reach by mid-year and even Rouge at Sephora is fairly easy for me by Sept/Oct. I’d be shocked it I ever made it to Diamond.

  • Audrey

I’m not sure who stood up at the meeting and said, “Hey guys, I have a great idea! It’s called Diamond…”

    • Isabella Muse

same person that stands up at the Too Faced meetings and is like, “Hey guys, I have a great idea! It’s called unicorns….” LOL!

  • Denise

I’ve been Platinum at ULTA since the level’s inception, and I usually hit $450 by the end of the first quarter. Just out of curiosity, I added up my 2017 spending, and was shocked to find it was over $1300 (not including the value of items obtained by points redemption). With that being said, I don’t find the additional benefits of Diamond status to be worth a $750 spending requirement increase. I don’t use salon services, and I’m infuriated that they didn’t implement free shipping with no minimum. I acquire the majority of my points by using my ULTA MasterCard, for *everything*. I still love the Platinum rewards program, but Diamond is underwhelming.

    • Michelle

I LOVE my Ulta MasterCard too! I use it for EVERYTHING as well! I think I may hit Diamond just in Ulta Dollars alone since I rack those dollars up with my MasterCard!

  • Gina

I don’t know how they came up with this $1200, maybe they think spend $100/month is a realistic goal for everyone? However, I do remember when they sent out the survey a few months ago asking opinions to the better rewards program, free shipping is one of the options, without minimum purchase. Don’t know what happen to that one, and not sure why they put a $25 cap on especially they provide free shipping w/$25 occasionally already, so what’s the point for reaching to Diamond level?

  • Agona

If you try to reach status on both Sephora and Ulta, you’re looking at a beauty budget of $183.34/month. Since my New Year’s resolution is to cut back my spending, especially during the 1Q (I’m in the hole after a 2 week cruise to Australia/New Zealand and a new puppy, *gulp*), I don’t know if Ulta Diamond is achievable to me.

    • Isabella Muse

omg that cruise sounds amazing! where do you live from? do you have to fly in? Also, can I see new puppy pics please 😀

      • Agona

Heck yeah! I’ll email them to you. I live in MD, so I had to fly from MD to Sydney and then from Auckland back–it was definitely a haul!

        • Isabella Muse

holy cow that’s intense you must have been crazy exhausted! How long was the flight from MD to Sydney? I’ve never been to Aus but it’s on my bucket list!

          • Agona

Omg, it was 6 hrs to Cali and then 17 hrs to Sydney. It was only like 15 hrs from Auckland back to Cali–but we got cancelled on the flight back! So that was exhausting because we had to be re-immigrated back into New Zealand, then wait for the airline to book our hotel and bus us to it for the night. That’s why we did two weeks–with that much travel time, we wanted to make sure the juice was worth the squeeze!! 🙂 (Muse, also, I sent you an email using your Contact page.)

  • Molly

I can’t even reach Platinum status at Ulta even with my older relatives making me go there to buy them Poopourri. lol.

  • breyerchic04

I gave up on rouge this year and will just spend the $10 for sephora flash shipping,$1200 for Ulta is insane.

  • Kimkats

$1200?!?! I don’t think I’ve spent that much total at ulta, let alone in a year! Not gonna happen, Cap’n…..

  • Codename Duchess

I use their salon to get my hair done at least 5 times a year and even with that Diamond status seems unattainable!

  • Michelle

It sucks. However, I don’t think I’ll be going up to VIB Rouge this year either.

  • Michelle

I have the Ulta Mastercard and this year I plan to only buy beauty products from Ulta so I hope to hit Diamond. I am really over Sephora. Their loyalty program is worthless. I think most of my products Ulta has as I like Murad and Clinique the best. I am also trying to avoid most the over-priced high-end stuff that really doesn’t do anything for me after all. We will see as I am also working on lowering my BS spending!! But Sephora is just dead to me for 2018!

  • Magenta Wilde

Blerg. That’s a lot to spend to achieve that status. I like Ulta a lot, but this isn’t making me any more likely to go to them. The 20 percent off coupons are still the real draw for me, but I really don’t want to have to spend $35 or $50 for the free shipping, because if I were planning on only buying $25 worth of product, if I added the extra items to secure free shipping, it’s not really free. Ulta has a nice mix of pricey and more affordable brands, but it’s not exactly an ideal shopping experience. The testers are often a mess. Items aren’t always clearly priced. The sale items are trashed. I get stalked by the one woman who wears more makeup than three circus clowns. Sephora doesn’t always have the best rewards or they disappear fast, but they do have the Flash program and I can usually score really generous samples when I go on-site. Plus their Weekly Wow is appealing. Now I just wait for deals to land there and find some cool stuff dramatically reduced. I don’t know why Ulta can’t offer a free shipping enrollment. I’m sure many people would be willing to pay $25 a year for free shipping, or maybe a higher enrollment for free shipping paired with regular coupons (maybe a 20 percent off any item each month or a 25 percent off a purchase every three months, or something like that.)

    • Carol G

I was thinking the same thing about Ulta offering a similar Free Shipping buy-in like Sephora does. I would gladly pay $25/year for free shipping because I shop at Ulta waaaay more than Sephora simply because Ulta’s rewards are real money vs Sephora ‘s stupid point system. Plus there are so many products and brands at Ulta that are “online only ” so you have no choice but to place an order. But their current $50 threshold for free shipping is just too much! They need to figure out a happy medium for all of us. This Diamond is not it.

  • MN Diamond Girl

Ulta needs to listen to their customers. What is the main complaint of their customers? High shipping rates on low-cost products. If shipping charges were based on a sliding scale or if they would drop their shipping charge to $3 per order, I think their customers would be happy. Diamond tier is a joke.

  • Melanie

    Happy New Year !!
$1200 is kinda of high. I will say Free Shipping should also be given at the $1200 price point. or charge a minimal $2.50 or something for shipping, not the 5.95 for orders that fall under the minimal amount….. something.

The reward benefit(s) all depend if you are a Ulta Shopper or not. For me, I am an Ulta Shopper. I hate Sephora haven’t shopped there in over 2 years. They have nothing I need or want that bad. I don’t buy the minute the latest and greatest comes out, because its typically not the greatest. Dior, Hourglass & Bobbi Brown are the only high end brands I gravitate towards and purchase directly from the brand site (email promotions with 10-20% discounts) or shop at Nordstrom if something catches my eye. Sephora is just to over glorified

As for Ulta, I do like the basics and stock up with sales and the 20% given throughout the year. To reach $1200 is honestly not hard to do at all. I exceeded this for 2017. This is gifts, holiday shopping, fragrance purchases with 20%, liter sale which they do a few times a year and I stock up. I love my skin care and do purchase mid – to high end. Purchase some UD, Lorac, hair tools, etc etc etc.. Plus the cash rewards you earn and hey throw in Ebates….it all adds up. Ulta has a lot to offer, again it all depends if you are an Ulta shopper or Sephora.

    Ulta is gaining on brands…

  • mylinda

Yup! Everything you said! I am in total agreement. I had a tough time just getting to Platinum over the past year since I never used to spend that much at Ulta. Diamond may be more feasible if one uses their salon services. I’m kind of wondering if that was one tactic to drive more business to their salon? I go to the Benefit brow bar maybe twice a year tops but I don’t get my hair or nails done at Ulta. I still think of Ulta as the budget shopper’s destination despite them getting more prestige brands in. Just by virtue of how expensive the stuff I get at Sephora is, it’s so much easier to get to Rouge. Diamond isn’t going to happen for me. Let’s all hope they don’t change the Platinum Perks and threshold for worse now.

  • Jacqueline

I just think it’s hilarious and even more of a slap in the face that not only do they make their top tier $200 more than Sephora’s, but you still have to make a $25 minimum purchase to get the free shipping. Apparently spending $1200 a year STILL isn’t enough!

  • Jack Mama

Sephora has no real benefits to being Rouge other than the free shipping, which you can purchase yourself for $10/year. Yes, their once a year 20% off high end brands is nice (with a decent returns policy), but Saks often sends me 20% off or more.
Ulta has an amazing point system that allows cash off my purchase. Yes please! If having free shipping kick in after $25 allows me to continue taking cash off my purchases, then I’m fine with that!

  • Sleepybird

Huh. I signed up for the urban decay junkie points program and they give you free shipping with no minimum on every order. Just saying.

    • Julie

I love love love UD’s Junkie program! Free shipping and a birthday gift just for signing up?? Uh, yes please!

  • Chris

It dawned on me that the $1200 might be a backdoor way of Ulta saying get our credit card so you can reach that $1200 goal. Umm…. no!

Though this complaint is minor, I was upset when they changed the take $5.00 off of non prestige items in the store coupon when you spend $15 or more to $3.50 off when you spend $15. It doesn’t work in our favor, as consumers. Sadly this diamond status makes me think the same thing. 🙁

  • M

Just spend more to get free shipping and return the nieś u dont need the next day Haha! I do ig all the time!

  • DP

When I first read about this all I could think of was, ok I’ve spent $1,200 and attained Diamond status. What month of the year would that actually be for me, if I did? Call it early October for grins. So then you have Oct, Nov & Dec at Diamond status AND what else could you possibly buy at Ulta and use their $25 threshold shipping? And how many times would you actually do it? I’m thinking this isn’t for casual beauty shoppers. Maybe this is geared towards a specific segment of the beauty buying/selling/service/ blogging community? This is probably the last time I will even give it another thought!

  • GlamourMom

Free shipping at $25 is not truly free shipping! With the diamond spending mark so high, a $25 minimum is unacceptable and even offensive. I really hope Ulta reconsiders the benefits they are offering. Right now, Diamond is not worth it. I agree it would have been much better to get a $25 gift card toward anything in the store. Salon credit/coupons usually exclude brow bar and that is the only service I use. The birthday gift at Ulta is useless, in my experience because they are so frequently out of stock in store and you can’t redeem it online. I have only been able to get mine every other year with great effort. This past year, it took three trips to Ulta to finally get my birthday gift because it was not in stock. So really, the only benefit being Diamond is earning points faster.

  • Kim

I could definitely make that-pretty sure I did that last year. Jan 2017, I had $375 to cash in.
I buy my soaps, shower gels, shampoos, shaving things, too faced palette and bronzer, basically anything I can when it is 5x points. In fact over the summer, I remember if U bought Stila liquid lipsticks it was something like 14x points because of multiple offers. Ulta really is awesome, but this diamond category is not at all impressive!

  • Julie

I think it would serve Ulta well to offer FREE shipping for Diamonds & even put a permanent lower shipping like orders of $25 for Platinums. I’ve been a Platinum for four years but Diamond IS a bit of a leap. I believe they will be adding higher end products, especially skin care, which could assist in the goal.
Also…Sephora has NOW CHANGED their shipping to 3-day….no longer 2-day….they snuck that in quietly on the scrolling banner on the website.
    Times…they are a changin’

    • Flaky

Oh interesting! I’ve never actually received a single order in two days, so I am glad they are finally realistic.

  • Emily

I hit Platinum pretty early in 2017, and I haven’t tracked my spending but it’s possible I spent that much at Ulta last year. Possible. That said, I’ve reached a point where I have so much more makeup, skincare, and fragrance than I could ever use, and if I buy as much in 2018 as I did in 2016 and 2017, then I need therapy and not free shipping at $25. Seriously that is so lame, and I’ve loved Ulta’s rewards program til now, but this one has me wondering what the heck they were thinking.

  • Swoozy

I’m pretty certain I’ll never be a Diamond member because I do mostly online shopping and, compared to Sephora, their website is so user unfriendly. I buy mostly Redken products there and made Platinum for the first time this year, but as meh as Sephora’s rewards program is, I love the detailed reviews shoppers leave there, the higher quality samples, the better sampler packs for sale, and the higher end items. If Ulta simply improved their website and their free samples, I’d probably shop there more often.

  • Heather

I shop a lot at both stores. With that being said many times if what I want is carried by both stores I go with Sephora simply bc I want that free shipping. So I was super disappointed in Ultas Diamond program. If they make changes to the platinum program it will for sure keep me from spending any $ at Ulta this year.

  • Judy

Nope. Epic fail for me. If I were to manage to spend a lofty $1200 at Ulta, I feel like free shipping should be a no brainer. I’ve been sooooo impressed with Ultas reward program that Ive shifted to them whenever possible, but this new program….lets just say, they dropped the ball. MEH!

  • abthursday

Thank you Muse for your wonderful insights! I have been an Ulta & Sephora customer for a long time, achieving Platinum and Rouge status, respectively. I am certain many of us have experienced customer service issues with both. They could each learn a thing or two from their customers and from one another. I agree that Ulta offers a better rewards program since it’s based on monetary rewards. I had read so many things about Ulta introducing their new status and had high hopes, only to be disappointed. Is there really a reason to try and reinvent the wheel? I felt Ulta was in the perfect position to learn what customers liked about Sephora’s reward program and use it to their benefit. I understand they offer lower-priced items and don’t want to offer free shipping on a $2 lip balm. No problem, what about a more achievable free shipping with a $10 purchase for diamond and $25 purchase for platinum? What about 3 day shipping instead of the 10-14 days it can take now? What about a shipping program everyone can join? I keep a list of things I “need” (honestly, do I really need anything at this point?) for Ulta and toss them in the cart to reach the free shipping requirements. I live near many Ulta locations but they are always out of stock, haven’t received new items yet, online only, or the store is a mess! I agree with everything shared here and wished they thought it through a bit more. That said, I am certain I won’t be making Diamond level and knowing it’s not really worth it, I am ok with that.

  • KatyCT

I was already thinking that I have spent way too much on makeup and related items in the past. With this new program it just makes me want to buy even less. There is no way I will spend that much at Ulta so why even bother trying.

So, Muse – the third option for the $50 minimum (even though you want just one thing) is to skip the purchase altogether! That’s how I’m going to shop going forward even if I don’t get Platinum. I’ll shop my stash – it’s much cheaper in the end.

  • Jennifer

I can kinda see why they won’t do completely free shipping and made the minimum high. Their rewards points are excellent. They cannot give everything away and still make money. They should have just left it as is. I spend more at Ulta for the points. I have no desire to earn a gift card for services.

  • Christina

I doubt I’ll make diamond either and was hoping that their changes to the program would include free shipping at a lower purchase point for Platinum members (which I pretty easily reach). However, given that they do the 20% off prestige brands coupons more than once a year (cough, cough, Sephora), I’d rather keep those coming than get free shipping at a lower purchase price.

  • Lisa C

I love Ulta but that is a super high threshold to reach! I was wondering if maybe they see something happening down the road, like maybe some high end brands coming to Ulta? That would be nice, and the only reason I could see the justification, but that is still high. And why not free shipping? I wonder if its because they have so much drug store and they think ppl might pick up $5 here and there and it wouldn’t be worth it to them. But don’t they get a special deal with the carriers anyway when they do free shipping? Idk, just seems a little greedy on their part. Lets hope for more high end brands to come!

  • Lori Pease

It’s a big NO for me because I don’t shop enough at ULTA to qualify. I only use ULTA for drugstore makeup that is not at Walgreens/CVS and with NYX coming to these stores…those trips to ULTA are even more rare for me. Shipping at ULTA sucks because, like this week, I put in an order on Monday and I won’t get it until Tuesday of NEXT week! If that was with Sephora, I would have it by now. I’ll just keep going for my Rouge status, Sephora carries the brands I like.

  • kellly

Nope. Too rich for my blood, plus setting a minimum purchase amount on top of it? Sort of defeats the purpose of free shipping if you want to just buy one item. I guess I can save my $1200 now (ha-ha). Thanks for the warning!

  • Randi MacDonald

I’ve ordered things I don’t want with things I want, just to reach free shipping, but when I’m in the area of the store, I returned the things I didn’t want. i didn’t reach Platinum last year, I was 30 away. I’m fine with that, I’m on a No Buy anyway.

  • genevieve

I think the beauty retailers have a good thing going with all those tiers, rewards etc in their favour – not in the consumers. As I use to purchase items from international retailers, the shipping costs started becoming far more than the item – so I would let it go. Yet the same beauty product here would be more than twice the price…a no win situation.
If a beauty blogger like you Muse can’t reach diamond, then there must be something wrong in the way it has been structured.
Take care in the cold weather Muse. We are swealtering here in Melbourne Aus – 43 deg today (celcius).

  • Tina

This ones tricky, they’re not going to offer free shipping like Sephora because they have so many lower priced items so that’s understandable they’d still have some kind of minimum, but they could have done something like a code they can be used X times for free shipping, so you could use it when you really wanted and then have a lower minimum the next time.

I think that the tier is high because they are hoping to win you over to make more high end purchases there, especially as they expand their range and get more high end and luxury brands. Rouges get free shipping with Sephora, but I’m betting most of their orders are mostly in excess of $25 and prob even $50 free shipping limits anyway so that perk isn’t as much of a perk as you might think.

The $25 is obviously to invent you to try their salon services.

Even without Diamond I think Ulta rewards and Perks beat Sephora’s hands down, just sad they are not in Canada, even though they ship here it’s not worth purchasing with the exchange and shipping costs,

  • Flaky

I will be curious to see if the coupons are tiered the way Sephora does with its VIB sale. If the diamond level recieves a deeper discount when their big Ulta sales come along, that may be incentive.

But really, I struggle to spend $450 there as it is. My strategy has been to only buy at Ulta when its not available at Sephora. I want to keep my VIB rouge status going for the 20% off coupon which I use to stock up on my skincare.

  • kjh

All I can think of to say is WTF? 1200, really? Will have to check to see what was spent last year. Rouge 3 day shipping freq winds up being 3 weeks from the local hub, so it really isn’t an incentive. Tried to be non Rouge, non Platinum this year, but failed. Ulta near me is great, big S unacceptable, Little S better kept, friendlier, but less selection. Do mostly online shopping after reviews/swatches, but need nothing. Nada. Zero. Think i’ll try to avoid Pokémon syndrome, and buy replenishments. Have to admit to an Ulta soft spot, as they started Cosrx after I asked twice…and that is not the only line. They listen. S touts Son and Park beauty water, which has more irritants than the FAB Muse reviewed. Their opinions…and that of most consumer reviews…hold zero sway with me. CS is generally suckworthy. I think as a business move, diamond was illy conceived, and it could alienate more than it pleases. Beauty purchases are fickle, and we are all willing to search for the best deal. And diamond is not it.

  • Julie

This was such a letdown. I spend a lot of money at ULTA, but even with my minor addiction to lipstick (I can stop anytime I want, I just don’t want to!) there’s no way I’d average $100/month. Even if I did, so what? I rarely order things online, I don’t use their salon, and that extra. 25 points per $1 doesn’t make financial sense to me. I’m not upping my beauty spending by $600-800 a year to save $50.

  • Kim

As someone who hits that amount regularly at Ulta that’s easy for me. Ulta is the ONLY place besides the drugstore to get beauty items in my town, so I’m for it. Sephora has the designer luxury brands but I don’t buy those anyway. My only gripe is they should let people hitting diamond choose their perk. For example I don’t need to buy online much, so I’d rather have an extra beauty service card or double points vs 1.5 but those with no stores who can’t use the beauty card might prefer the free shipping. Sephora is owned by parent company LVM which is a global brand therefore shipping for them is nothing they ship enough to have access to bulk pricing. Ulta doesn’t. Also Ulta sells things that are cheap, there’s people who will place ten orders for ten $3 items and want free shipping, that’s something that costs money, they already take a loss with their points so from a BUSINESS pov you have to be reasonable. Also shipping is the ONLY benefit of rogue and most items at Sephora are pricier than ultas minimum anyway so really it’s just the luxury illusion that is winning you over and not any real benefits to you as a consumer.

  • wendy

Let’s just bottom line it. ULTA SUCKS.
I’d make diamond, probably in the 1st quarter, but now they’ve gone and pissed me off.
I am rouge now for the first time, I have a feeling Sephora will be seeing more of my money

  • A

I wish they would look at 2017 spending and surprise people who spent over 1200 with diamond (like me!) I spent well over 1200 (gulp). They should also allow your birthday gift to be added to an order. I live far away from an Ulta so it is not practical to drive for my birthday gift. This years gift was a joke anyway. I buy any drugstore products that I can from Ulta. I stock up with xxxx points promotions, hoard my points and then splurge. They really need to start carrying some higher end stuff though. I am aging and willing to spend serious money on skin care. Right now Sephora gets most of my skin care budget. I also agree if if you spend 1200 a year, you should get free shipping. Also stop forgetting to put my samples in my box! How irritating.

    • Mandy

What was your Birthday gift? I was thrilled with my free mascara! I know there was also a NYX pallet they did, which was normally like $20. But, I wouldn’t have liked that personally. I think it’s great they offer a birthday gift at all. We should be grateful.

  • Penny

Wow! That amount will probably be unattainable for me, but even if it were attainable, the fact that I would STILL have to spend at least $25 to get free shipping is crappy! Guess I will just be happy being Platinum. Boooo to Ulta. 🙁

  • Mandy

I have spent $1200 at Ulta since July…so I can’t see how it’s unattainable! And trust me, I buy nothing at full price! All sales, hotbuys, clearance, coupons, etc. If you buy skincare, you can easily reach it. Dr. Perricone, Juice Beauty, Peter Thomas Roth are my favorites. I also think there are plenty of prestige make up brands. I never buy drugstore brands because I know how much they can damage your skin and all the chemicals and fillers they contain. I do buy some of the natural/organic brands of drugstore skin though. I love the idea of Diamond because I think we should get something more for spending that amount. I do wish they offered free shipping, but I also realize it costs money to ship things. I see Diamond a way to give to the customer, but some people always complain. I love the beauty service card- Benefit Brow Bar! I also am very grateful they give a Birthday gift at all! I loved the IT mascara I got!

  • Rebecca

That seems like total nonsense!!! Hey, why don’t we insult our customer’s intelligence by offering them free shipping IF they spend at least $25 rather than waiving it all together because oh hey, that’s right, they also need to spend twice as much more from Platinum just to get to Diamond!! But we’ll also give you a $25 card to use in the salon rather than a gift card that can be used on anything because we know the majority of our shoppers probably don’t use our salon so it’s likely it’ll go unused. Ulta for the win!! I am truely so sick and tired of terrible service from both Sephora and Ulta. There needs to be a mass exodus from the shops in order for them to really get it. If you want high-end, shop at Neiman’s or Nordstrom’s which often offers free shipping and is the same price as Sephora or if you’re wanting drugstore shop at Target or Wal-Mart or drugstores if you’re looking for bogo’s and such. If you’re just wanting to browse to see if you find a deal, shop at TJ Maxx and Marshall’s. I have found beauty blenders, La Prairie, Nars, Kat VonD, Anastasia, Marc Jacobs, Kevyn Aucoin and so so so much more at least 50% off and they always have insane deals on drugstore brands. Just that it’s more of let’s see what I find rather than I need x, y & z. Anyhow, that’s my unsolicited advice for you.

  • Jmh

I am not worried as I already made plat this year and it’s February 8th. I get my hair, nails and dermalogica facials done every 5-6 weeks not to mention the endless amounts of products to satisfy the product junky in me. Lol. I spent way over that last year and before and I am happy that I will finally be treated fancier. As platinum I already get a tonne of great stuff like free IT makeup brushes, free Estée Lauder lippy, free full size Clinique eye cream and those are just off the top of my head. I’m excited!

    • Jmh

Also forgot to remind everyone that once you hit the level it’s through the next year. For example, I hit platinum beginning of February 2018 and now I’m plat through 2019. So when I make diamond, I will have it for all of 2019.

  • Kim

So after my original comment, I ended up buying a load of Juice Beauty products and loved it and got the full line, which sent my diving right into Diamond Status end of January. So I just wanted to add that Diamond members DO get perks like platinum perks that are for us only, sometimes its the same for both tiers, but better GWPs. I also placed an order online for some online clearance and spent only about $70 total, but my order came with FULL size package of Benefit’s skin care items, deluxe size samples, and now every time I shop in store, they always throw freebies in the bag. They sent me 5x points on fragrance, and free Juicy perfume set with any fragrance purchase over $20. Spent 20 on a roller ball, 6 on some bath salts, 14 on a deodorant (counted as fragrance! extra points!), and got the Juicy Set, a body wash free, a matrix deluxe size shampoo and conditioner set with any purchase, a sample bare minerals serum, and the samples in every order, but ALSO in my box was a mini Becca highlighter, its a 10 silk spray sample, and a full size overnight lip balm by Burts Bees.

I mean, everyone says Ulta sucks, but I love them, I never get this much free stuff from any other store I shop at, I DO spend a lot here, but easy for me since they sell things like shaving cream, bath bombs, sheet masks, and other everyday products and stuff me and my man use so it adds up fast, but the way my points double and accrue now is INSANE (1.25/1.5, using my credit card, and getting lots of targeted multipliers at a time) , I hit over 2000 points in two months, and just going to stack them until Christmas and get everyone’s presents free.

TL/DR : Ulta Diamond is worth it for the freebies alone.

    • SDinIL

I almost forgot! Yes I got a full sized Juice serum in my first box after being Diamond, just “because we love our Diamonds” the card said. Not sure how I forgot about that that…… My Diamond present was a full size Laura Gehhler Gelato Illuminator which I really like. I also use my Ulta MC to get 2 x points there and 1 pt for every $3 spent elsewhere. It adds up! Never ever carry a balance though. The interest rate is terrible.

      • Kim

I would have loved that highlighter! I got a Butter London Eye Glaze as my diamond welcome gift! Full size as well. I get offers regularly though, like yesterday was a full size Nars product with ANY purchase, no limit required. I get offers like that all the time now, free gifts all the time, the Dec birthday gift the IT Cosmetics mascara was given to me last time I was in there! I barely buy anything now unless it’s on clearance or comes with an awesome gwp/diamond perk. WAY BETTER THAN SEPHORA ROGUE THOUGH!!!!

  • SDinIL

Hangs head in shame because I reached Diamond before it could even be seen on the website. I got my welcome package in the end of February………… yeah kind of ridiculous spending on my part but some of that is because I buy for my family too. We combine orders to hit the free shipping (yeah that doesn’t really explain the massive spending either but I am trying to justify here). I buy A LOT of makeup and skin care from both Sephora and Ulta. If you get a present from me its makeup or skin care.

I must say however I recently had a problem with an order. It was after I hit diamond status. the difference in customer service for the problem was night and day. There is no special number to call like Sephora has but they thanked me for being a Diamond. Fixed my problem and shipped it 2nd day. When I went into the store and bought some stuff they thanked me when checking out for being a Diamond and gave me a sample Too Faced mascara and some perfume sample (that smelled terrible I should have written it down before chucking it). That never happened before to me with Ulta, a bad order fixed with 2nd day shipping and random free samples in the store. Maybe it was my bad luck before or maybe hidden benefits are there.

    • Isabella Muse

congrats! ;-D You’re prob one of my few readers that reached it ;-D SWEET! because Ulta has some CS horror stories out there!

      • Agona

You know, usually at the start of the year, I try to focus my purchases at Ulta to hit Platinum and for points, knowing I’ll make it up at Sephora during the spring and fall sale. But this year, for some reason (I don’t even know why), most of my purchases have been at Sephora. I guess their new releases are grabbing me more than Ulta??

  • Denise Pemberton

    I reached it yesterday.
Didn’t know about it, won’t change my life.
Still have till the end of the year to go, so obviously they need to add another tier.

  • Alissa Ashley Ackerman

I just reached Diamond after under 5 months shopping at Ulta.

I buy pretty much everything i need to buy there, though; My purchases include loads of makeup, of course, skincare, minimal haircare, hair removal products, deodorants and fragrances, and i get my hair cut there…and i love any chance i can get to try something new!… particularly if there’s a sale or freebie…which..I fall into quite a bit too often!

Being that it’s my one-stop-shop, it wasn’t hard to reach Diamond.
… we’ll see how i end up feeling about it in the coming months, though! I’m not horribly impressed by the perks they have written out for it, but i have no idea about the unwritten ones–How many more freebies do we get? Bonus point days? Exclusive sales? …Things i’ll be evaluating as the time comes.

  • Leslie Krawzyk

I have the exact same frustrations as you with the Diamond status. I just reached Diamond (yet embarrassed and disgusted as to how much I’ve spent on makeup this year….but anyways) and it felt like a slap in the face. I’ve never used the salon services so I have no idea what to use my $25 salon credit that would only pay for half of any service, if I’m lucky. Also, the special “gift” you get when reaching Diamond status was NOTHING compared to a monthly Sephora beauty reward sample. And the whole shipping thing…..I just can’t let it go! I’ve spent more than I have at Sephora (which I’m VIB Rouge there too) and I have to spend $25 minimum to get free shipping?! It’s outrageous! Ulta had always been my #1 beauty store BUT now its clear they care more about sales than their customers, even more so since I’ve sent them a complaint on all these issues and have not gotten a response other than to tell me my message has been forwarded on to the appropriate department. No other reply as of yet, and it’s been more than 1 month.

Needless to say, I plan to shop WAY WAY less at Ulta and more at Sephora. Sephora has by far better customer service!

    • Kim

The difference for shipping is because unlike Sephora. ULTA has thousands of items for under $10 (and most of them under $5)! The cost to ship multiple items for people shopping on a whim would negate any perks. Ulta is also an independent company, they dont have the pull Sephora (owned by Louis Vuitton) has for global shipping at low costs.
This is actually the least annoying and most practical thing about diamond status.

Most annoying thing is that Platinum members get the same perks. That is what pisses me off. Wheres the incentive to spend more if those at the lower tier get all the same specials and freebie perks we do?! NOT ONE DIAMOND PERK IS EXCLUSIVE TO ONLY DIAMOND TIER, EXCEPT….

The salon credit. Make it a gift card or just a free mini facial or something like that and be done with it. The credit doesnt even cover a basic blowout and theres nothing else to do with it if you dont want or use the salons so why is that a perk? I’d even rather have a freebie from the Ulta brand collection that to use their shitty estheticians and hairstylists who cant land jobs in real salons yet.

      • Denise

I’m Platinum, and I do not get free shipping at $25, like Diamond customers do. I also don’t get a full size freebie offered to me every month.

  • Kim Deline

I know I’m waaaay late in the game in commentary, but I am a Diamond member, also with an Ulta credit card, and think I’m going to quit Ulta altogether…. the perks are basically a joke (we get free full-size offers occasionally, but they’re always another highlighter, ugh) and I get 2x points as a credit card holder, where you only receive 1.5 as Diamond! What’s most upsetting is the fact that Ulta is phasing our many of the Korean brands that I loved! Honestly, Sephora and Dermstore has more of what I purchase. I plan to cancel the card and separate them from my life ☹️

  • Tiffany

I reached it. I buy shampoo, deodorant and face wash, etc in addition to makeup. There are 6 people in this house over the age of 15 so it didn’t take long. I just bought 4 jumbo sized It’s a 10 shampoos because they are 40% off. You can’t get those prices anywhere else. When OPI was on sale it was 50% off, I’ve never seen it that low on Amazon. Bought 10 nail polished! So yeah, I love me some Ulta.

  • Julie

I’m a Diamond member and today is my birthday so what does that mean I didn’t get nothing in my email this year.

    • Isabella Muse

you get 2x points all through your birthday month as well as a nars mini lipstick with purchase in store. check under your account dashboard to activate your 2x rewards!

    • Cindy

Call or email customer service. You should have gotten an email with an in-store coupon for the free gift (no purchase necessary) and a separate coupon for $10 off any purchase. The 2x Birthday points are all month long and stack with other point offers.

    • Kim

They now send the emails out on the 1st of the month and NOT on your birthday like they used to. Check your spam folder or promotions folder if using gmail to find it!
