Tarte’s Mermaid Eyeshadow Palette Might Create Waves

I receive a small commission if you shop through my link.

Tired of unicorns? The new Tarte Be A Mermaid & Make Waves Eyeshadow Palette ($42) might make you happy or not? Ok, well I’m not nearly as tired of mermaids as I am of unicorns so this could be a refreshing change. Although, if I am honest we’re beating a dead horse lately with mermaids and unicorns. Someone should create a nude palette inspired by a Satyr’s coat or something. Or an all green palette inspired by Medusa. Or maybe an eyeliner that evokes the spirit of a Sphinx. If we’re going to do mystical creatures we might as well get super creative here.

None the less the order of business for the last year has been mermaids and unicorns and unicorns and mermaids. Last year, Tarte launched their Make Believe in Yourself Eyeshadow Palette which was more about unicorns. This year the new Tarte Be a Mermaid & Make Waves Eyeshadow Palette is, obviously, inspired by mermaids. Someone crack that glass at Planet Hollywood, get down that tail, and let’s get these eyeshadows on our eyes and see how quickly we can become a mermaid.

This palette arrives in an iridescent seashell compact that even Ariel would be jealous of. It’ll likely be one of the key selling points for the palette especially for mermaid lovers. Inside you’ll find 14 eyeshadow shades with matte and metallic finishes although, it does look like metallics will dominate here.

Shades:

  • Nude Beach (pale gold luster)
  • Shore Thing (sienna)
  • Frosé (rose gold luster)
  • Beach Please (maroon luster)
  • Mermosa (warm gold)
  • Cavern (burgundy luster)
  • Fin-tastic (antique bronze)
  • Sandbar (milk chocolate)
  • Salt Water (pale taupe luster)
  • Shipwreck (mahogany)
  • Shell Yea (bronze luster)
  • Bubbles (lilac duochrome)
  • Splash (turquoise luster)
  • Lagoon (teal luster)

I did purchase this because I do want to review it on the blog but also, because I really enjoyed the Make Believe in Yourself Palette and liked the formula so I expect more of the same from this palette.

I have no doubt many makeup lovers will snatch this up immediately as Tarte fans and as mermaid ones. But I imagine some of you are jaded since last year within a very short time the Make Believe in Yourself Palette went on clearance. It launched March 21st and at the end of May it was already on sale which had quite a few people upset they paid full price.

Whether or not you need it not right now will be a question on the table at the moment I’m sure.

Either way, expect a review and swatches from me soon telling you all about it.

Tarte Be A Mermaid & Make Waves Eyeshadow Palette is available now at sephora.com.

Yep, I agree with it going on sale. Going to wait. Although it does look pretty, I am going to wait because I don’t NEED it. Plus want to wait for reviews. This isn’t LE is it? If not, then I’ll definitely wait for a sale. Do love the colors for spring though…and it being mostly metallic too! 🙂

    • Isabella Muse

The problem with sales is it hurts the brands more than helps because every time they release something people are automatically going to go to that place of, “Hmm I don’t need this! It’ll be on sale in a month!” totally kills the buzz for them! It’s a shame really! No mention of LE!

  • Kimmyyy

Okay, I actually like this, as opposed to the tacky TF unicorn stuff. This to me looks more like something all ages could enjoy that is much classier while still being cute. This doesn’t look like kid makeup. Even if I’m not always the biggest fan of their eyeshadow formulas, you can at least count on Tarte to keep is classy looking.

    • Isabella Muse

It really is nicely packaged. I am over unicorns and mermaids but I still think this is quite a nice looking palette plus I liked the Make Believe in Yourself Palette so I don’t doubt I’ll enjoy this!

  • Tabitha

I’m gonna be positive today!!!! Not gonna poo-poo Tarte! One thing I’m always really impressed with is Tartes packaging. It’s beautiful, nice and weighty & not gonna lie, I’ve purchased more Tarte than I needed just because of their packaging! Lol

    • Isabella Muse

lol! Good attitude! It really is nice! I like the packaging a lot and in general their packaging is great! I’m a very visual person even with books if I see a book that has a really great cover I’ll totally be intrigued by it. And with makeup without a doubt packaging totally slays me ;D

  • Maria

I really like the colors in this palette. I will wait for reviews. I had trouble last year with the Tarte Make believe palette. I tried different eyeshadow brushes and the shades did not go on properly even with primer.

  • Sarah

I really don’t want to give Tarte my money but man, this is pretty…

I’ll wait for swatches and I’ll wait for it to go on sale, because it will. I paid way too much for the Make Believe in Yourself palette! 🙁

  • Jules

Oooooo! Pretty! I’ll wait for your review, but I love the make believe in yourself palette. Very tempting. Did you see that wet n wild’s newest collection has a shade called “death to unicorns”? Of course, they’re calling the collection goth something or other, but the shades look mostly unicorn to me.

    • Isabella Muse

LOL yes and I thought it ironic that appears in the collection which is pretty much very iridescent ;-D

  • kjh

The pkg/layout is gorgeous, shades seem fine. If one isn’t insistent on seeing the individual pans as m’s tails, you can see the scallop/clamshell as a fun summer palette. Coastal places wear these motifs all the time, esp in summer. At least this is clearly an adult issue, direct and not cutesy/preteen. Looking forward to your swatches/look/opinion. Agree with the cos undercutting themselves by current release/pricing /markdown routine.

  • otterkat

See, I would love to see a mermaid palette inspired by eg Seanan McGuire/Mira Grant’s mermaids (an amazing SFF author), cos you’d get everything from grey-greens to abyssal blues to bone-whites and blood-reds . . . .

    • Isabella Muse

just want to say I love Into the Drowning Deep/Rolling in the Deep 😀

      • otterkat

Oh how fabulous, another fan! What other genres / authors do you enjoy? – and yes admittedly that particular mermaid collection might be a touch morbid but I’d buy it 🙂

        • Isabella Muse

I will read anything with words on it. horror, sci/fi, fantasy, romance ;-D I’m a complete book worm! Have been since I was like 12 years old ;-D some of my favs: ann radcliffe, neil gaiman, douglas adams, jane austen, terry pratchett, john scalzi, george r.r. martin, kristen ashley, ray bradbury, dermot bolger, daphne du maurier, the bronte’s, dickens, there are so many ;-D Indeed but just think about it. Blood reds, grassy greens, deep dark ocean blues!

          • Christina

Muse I love you! LOL! I’m a total bookworm as well! Finally, someone who shares my love of beauty, drama, and books! 😀

          • Isabella Muse

haha I probably have more books than makeup ;-D <3!

  • Paige

I liked the Make Believe in Yourself palette well enough, but unless this is a super special and unique formula, I don’t see myself getting what looks essentially like MBiY 2.0. The packaging is really unique, and appealing; I’ll enjoy admiring it in the store next time I stop by. I think this is nice for someone who displays their makeup outside of a cabinet, and who doesn’t already have a lot of shiny in their collection. Since I am not either of those things, I’ll probably pass. Plus, someone pointed out that it looks like the shades in the palette are pointed in the wrong direction to be the mermaid scales, and now it’s all I see when I look at this.

  • Christina

More than Unicorns and Mermaids I am tired of red toned shades that can make lots of people myself included look sick. Plus so many people have dupes upon dupes of these shades at this point.
Some other colors are odd choices to me: beach please, fin-tastic look quite similar, as do shore thing and sandbar, salt water and nude beach. Also the red shipwreck and the green splash right next to one another is the first place my eye is drawn and is off-putting to me visually. I am intrigued but am not sold. The package is absolutely to die for I agree! I will also wait for your trusted review. I love the Make Believe in Yourself palette too so I am tempted.
    😉
I am surprised no one has done a palette based on flowers for spring. That seems so obvious and would have plenty of options. Maybe I missed it in the past?
All of this fantasy inspired makeup seems so dated. We need something fresh and modern.
I love the Ariel meme though it is a classic!

  • Christina

It’s pretty, but I’m probably not going to get it unless it goes on sale or it looks amazing when I see it in person. I just don’t enjoy Tarte’s eyeshadow formulas, though the last one I tried was the Make Believe one.

I’m probably in the minority here, but I don’t really like the packaging. Maybe if it was smooth and shiny in stead of that pebbled leather, I’d like it more. Like you, Muse, I’m a very visual person–heck, I’m in the design industry for a reason–but I don’t see myself displaying this on my vanity. Then again, I don’t display my makeup on the vanity and prefer everything tucked away neatly in my drawer. LOL! I envision myself admiring it the first few days I get it, and then shoving it in my drawers and getting frustrated that it can’t stack it neatly with the others. Haha!

I do like the colours, though, so I’m not going to write it off entirely until I see it in person or read some reviews!

  • Diane

It should be no surprise to you to hear that I’m DYING for this beauty!! Something in my gut says they’re gonna do a whole mermaid collection. If you watch the video on Sephora the brushes the girl is using look like mermaid tails!

    • Isabella Muse

as soon as I saw it I thought of you! ;-D I wouldn’t doubt they do an entire Mermaid themed collection considering last year they released the unicorn one with lip paints, etc!

      • diane

aawww yay!! i haven’t bought tarte in so so long and this broke my no tarte buy. even tommie was like “not only is it mermaid, look at all those stupid pink shades. you’re doomed” LOL!! i’m sitting on my hands nervous to see what else they do with this!!

  • Jen

I don’t think I could ever use every shade in this palette… But it is so pretty D:

    • Isabella Muse

I’m literally testing it right now ;-D It arrived this morning ;-D Will let you know how it goes after I tested a few days 🙂

  • Michelle

Lotta pink in this… I think the next trend is going to be Mauve with a capital M. Rose, Berry, Mauve, Pink, Blush, whatevs

  • Kish

It looks like they just rearranged the shades in the one from the unicorn collection. Ugh. Tarte used to be my favorite brand, but lately I think everything is boring, barely different than their last release stuff. I suppose the only good thing is that if anyone wants it, it will be on sale soon. I’m doing pretty well with my low buy this year so far. I did pick up the Lorac Pro 3 when it was on sale at Ulta, I feel like I’ll get a lot more use out of it than something like this new Tarte one. However, I still eagerly await your swatches haha.

  • Agona

I bought this and should be arriving in a few days since I loved tarte’s Make Believe in Yourself palette. Although I’m a little worried that the packaging on this one will be bulky.

    • Isabella Muse

It’s a little big! I got mine the other day! Also it doesn’t shut for some reason!

  • Maggie Liu

I love the color scheme and the packaging is a perk but all that means nothing if their are problems with the packaging

  • Rachel Runyan

I love the packaging! The colors look nice, but I’m worried it will be too similar to Make Believe in Yourself, which I have. I wish there were more blues and greens in this, since it’s mermaid inspired.
