Physicians Formula Murumuru Butter Lip Cream Review & Swatches
Physicians Formula Murumuru Butter Lip Cream ($7.99) are a new range of soft, butter lip balms with an SPF 15 that launched in 12 shade selections for Spring 2019 at the drugstore.
I was pretty excited to find Murumuru Butter Lip Cream at my local Harmons in a few shades. The entire shade range isn’t quite available in stores yet though but as soon as they do fully launch I’ll be hauling a few more shades considering how much I love them. At the moment Physicians Formula has these available on their site which is an outlet they’ve been using for the past several months to launch new products. It does seem to take a bit longer for their newer products to pop into stores as they appear to be cutting out the middleman (the drugstore) in favor of generating traffic and sales to their own freshly launched website. This makes it challenging to find any of their new items in stores which I find a bit irritating since I’m Miss Frugal Gourmet when it comes to paying for shipping.
None the less, I guess I got lucky because these were at Harmon’s and I snatched up the shades they had available.
Here’s my thoughts, review, and swatches of the new Physicians Formula Murumuru Butter Lip Cream!
Well, well, aren’t these a pleasant surprise? I know the entire makeup world loves Physicians Formula Murumuru Butter Blush but I’m not sorry for not liking it. I tried it when it launched and haven’t tried it since as it did nothing for me! Maybe the formula is somehow better now? Maybe the newer shades are nicer? I dunno but I didn’t like them when I tried them on the original launch.
Since these new lip creams are inspired by that formula I sort of had this prejudice towards them from the get go and I was expecting to hate them but they are just delightful! They bring back my fondness for Almay Smart Shade Butter Kiss Lipstick and Revlon Colorburst Lip Butter but in a way softer, creamier formula.
Physicians Formula packages these in a simple palm decorated barrel with a clear cap. Each lip cream contains 0.15 oz of product and will set you back $6-$8 each shade. I paid $6.79 at Harmons but I imagine they’ll be closed to $8 at stores like CVS and Walgreens.
I’ve read a few reviews on these already and I’ve also watched a few and no one mentions any faulty packaging but all five my of shades did have some weird packaging issues. First off, four out of my five shades wouldn’t swivel down. Well, actually, they did swivel down but they’d proceed to slowly pop back up after I swiveled them down. Thankfully enough it wasn’t too big an issue since I had plenty of room to replace the cap without squishing the head of the lip cream but it was an annoying issue I couldn’t get them to swivel back down once I swiveled them up. Secondly, they are a bit like Tare’s Rainforest of the Sea Drench Lip Splash Lipstick in the fact they are super melt-y! I think it’s safe to say you aren’t going to want to travel with these in your makeup bag in the Summer. The formula is very, very soft and melt-y! I felt some shades got ruined because I pressed too hard during application and chunks of the tip sort of melted off as I applied. I have steam heat in my house (I live in an old Victorian house) so, perhaps my makeup room was a little to warm for these guys? I’m not sure but they seem very, very soft to me.
That being said, I loved them.
They have a very light coconut fragrance and flavor which I found very pleasant and a creamy, buttery texture that glided onto lips like liquid butter. They pack super pigment and provide incredible opaque color on a single application which I didn’t expect from something that looked like a lip balm. They feel very moisturizing on my drier lips and have a smooth look with a shiny finish and a long wear of around four hours without migration or feathering issues. All the shades I purchased were incredibly flattering as well! The nudes are simply gorgeous!
I did have some issues with packaging but all in all, the formula was very luxurious and beautifully formulated! Very soft, glided onto my lips easily, produced a very nice shiny look with plenty of color, plus they wore as long as a lipstick!
Physicians Formula did an excellent job with these and I’m sure you’ll be hearing plenty of raves in the next several weeks about them from other bloggers and influencers.
I’m Muse Approving them!

Where to buy
Physicians Formula Murumuru Butter Lip Cream are a new range of creamy, buttery, pigmented lip creams. As per the name they are in fact a butter cream and not a lip balm formula. I thought the formula was very soft, creamy, and butter with excellent pigmentation, a super moisturizing formula, and a beautiful long wear that added both shine and gorgeous color to my lips. Physicians Formula launched them in 12 shade selections and even went so far as to include an SPF 15 in the mix!
- Pigmented, creamy, buttery, moisturizing formula.
- Fairly inexpensive.
- A great range of shades for the brand (12 total) which typically only releases their products in two or three shades.
- Faulty packaging that doesn’t allow the lip cream to swivel completely down.
- Very soft and melty which causes some breakage issues!
Physicians Formula Murumuru Butter Lip Cream should be a treat for anyone who likes a lip balm that really goes that extra mile. Ideal for anyone with drier lips that wants color and plenty of moisture!
