Jones Road What the Foundation Tinted Moisture Balm ($44) is a fairly new tinted moisturizer created none other than the queen herself Miss Bobbi Brown. Why I do feel like I need to insert a roaring crowd sound when I typed that? Bobbi Brown, both the brand and makeup artist, have always been near and dear to my heart. It’s what I consider my first “grown up” makeup. It’s the brand that made me realize that more is less. It’s also the brand that made me realize you don’t have to be a certain age to enjoy makeup, that makeup is for every age. Sadly, Bobbi Brown did step down from the line a few years ago but the good news was she created a new, clean, makeup line called Jones Road. Jones Road is definitely something I can appreciate best now that I am older. It’s a brand for the minimalist makeup user and it’s a brand for those that are starting to seeing the signs of aging and struggle with too vibrant makeup. It’s a simple collection of products that will get you looking your best with very little effort or no how.

One of their more popular products is the Jones Road What the Foundation Tinted Moisture Balm (Or cream! This isn’t very balmy!) that’s available in 12 shade selections. This is a tinted moisturizer that contains a host of nourishing and hydration ingredients that provides sheer, light, your skin but better coverage. It went viral several months back when Meredith Duxbury gave it a rather poor review. As you may know from my prior post about Meredith she’s very keen on smearing gobs of foundation all over face. She definitely loves her full coverage. She got her hands on What the Foundation Tinted Moisture Balm and proceeded to use a huge bunch of it all over her face. Sadly, that didn’t work out. This isn’t a full coverage product. Don’t go into a purchase of this thinking that. This is for the natural, minimal makeup lovers who want a foundation product that brightens, eases dullness, evens out skin tone, and gives a fresh, natural look but not a full coverage one. For me, that’s ideal as I already have good skin but I tend to look dull and tired without a little bit of foundation.

I’m a one pump wonder. I use a single pump of foundation and I don’t even apply all over it nor do I apply it all over my face. My application process is probably weird but I use Vincent Ford’s (the man’s a genius! never uses a brush for foundation!) palming application method and it works perfect. I’ll apply a small dab at the sides of my nose and just press it gently into my skin. Light coverage has always been my bestest friend. I don’t like heavy foundation because I feel it ages me and also, I find it mask-like. Granted, I do enjoy a nice pigment foundation product but I’m also happy with something sheerer. Jones Road What the Foundation Tinted Moisture Balm is sheerer coverage in my opinion. I’d call it a tinted moisturizer or tinted cream foundation. The balm part…well, that confuses me as it isn’t really a solid balm nor does it feel balmy. So, let’s stick with cream for the sake of this review.

The cream or balm if you will arrives in a 1.14 oz glass jar with simple block lettering, a cream top, and 1.14 oz of foundation for $44. The price is pretty standard for a mid to high-range foundation product. I say mid-range because with inflation costs brands like Too Faced Foundation are around $44-$48. The size is about what you’d get as well! Actually, most foundations are around 1 oz to 1.08 oz so it’s a smidge bigger. If you’re judging the price and size to Tinted Moisturizer you’ll also find that it’s about the same. Oddly, a good tinted moisturizer from brands like Bobbi Brown and Laura Mercier have always come with a rather high price tag. It always puzzled me why something sheerer either costd more or the same as a more pigmented foundation.

We should address the jar packaging right? Not everyone is going to love that. I don’t find myself minding to be honest and do understand why it had to be in a glass jar. This is a very thick cream and it wouldn’t be easy to get it out of a tube. I also, don’t really mind scooping a bit out with a spatula. Jones Road actually sells their own but I have tons laying around!.

As I said above my application method is taking a small amount out of the jar, dotting it down the sides of my nose and gently blending it outwards or pressing it into my skin with the heels of my hands. When I first used it I was like what the hell is in here? What magic is this? This stuff is like melted butter. It just absorbs so beautifully into skin! It’s like a hybrid makeup and skincare all-in-one wonder (it contains Jojoba Oil and Sodium Hyaluronate). I mean, it’s thick, it’s creamy but that’s nothing really new or special in the world of foundation. But it’s sooooooooo moisturizing. Wow! It just melts into the skin and leaves it with a lightly, dewy finish. As it sets my skin felt plumped up and bouncy a few minutes after application and oh so hydrated. This stuff is a joy for dry skin users. No cakiness, no clinging to dry areas, just moisturizing, sheer coverage that leaves skin plump and bouncy!

I’d recommend this for dry skin, for aging skin, and for those that don’t require a ton of coverage. I wouldn’t recommend it for full coverage lovers, I wouldn’t recommend it for oily skin either. It’s a pretty rich and hydrating product that probably won’t work out for oily skin. That being said, if you want to apply and powder it down that might work out if you do have oily skin. As for the coverage, it’s pretty sheer. This is a light, natural coverage that will even out your skin tone, ease dullness, and brightens up your complexion but it won’t conceal imperfections that you might want to conceal. I was pretty impressed with how long it wore for me. Since it is fairly moisturizing I thought it would slip away quickly but I got about six hours of wear before it disappeared. I mean six hours isn’t ideal if you want something to wear all day but if you’re out and about on a Summer day and headed home to change (you can touch up at home) or just headed in for the night after your day it might be a good pick for lightweight wearing. You can extend that wear with powder on top obviously. Or if you want you can actually mix in a little of your own more pigmented foundation for extra coverage and longer wear.

For reference I got the shade beige which is light to medium with a neutral undertone. I do wish it had a more peach undertone as I’ve become a little more educated about my tone I find a light peach undertone in foundation works best for my complexion. Sadly, the next shade up is medium which has yellow undertones and wouldn’t work for me. Beige worked out well for me but not a perfect match.

I love it. I think it’s beautifully hydrating for my dry skin, pigmented enough to ease my dullness but not so pigmented I feel like I’m wearing a mask, and it looks natural. Not to mention it moves with your skin and gives that plumped up look and bouncy feel to my skin. It’s not gonna be a win for everyone. I can see some people not liking this type of formula but it’s a win for me. I wish they offered it a small size as I think people would be more inclined to purchase it so they can try it out before committing to a fuller-size!

Dry skin users, do try it. I think you’ll love this one. Let me know if you have already have or plan to would love to hear what you think of the Jones Road What the Foundation Tinted Moisture Balm.

This looks really interesting but I’m worried it might be a little too sheer. It really disappeared into your arm. I have redness around my nose and some uneveness (apparently not a word). Would concealer work on top of this just where needed? And does Jones Road do sales on their web site? I’m not a Rouge or a Platinum anywhere else. Thanks!

    • Isabella Muse

Hey Joyce! LOL I call it uneveness too! It does good with evening out my complexion but if you have a lot of redness I think it’s a bit too sheer to conceal that. They recommend using their “the face pencil” in conjunction with this https://jonesroadbeauty.com/products/the-face-pencil for the best coverage. Obviously, you don’t have to use that! You can always use your own concealer of choice. It just depends how bad the redness is. They did one during the Holidays I believe. Sign up for the newsletter and you’ll def be alerted to sales! I always post sales too ;-D

      • Kgirl

Girl don’t forget to try out the chantecaille future skin gel foundation during the next sale!

        • Isabella Muse

will do ma’am 🙂 Why do I feel like I have it already!? Oh god senior moment LOL!

I’ve been interested but with products like this – what is the SPF approach? I assume SPF first, maybe like a supergoop matte primer one- but then is my skin getting any of the “benefits” from a skincare-foreword foundation if it is the second layer?

    • Isabella Muse

no SPF at all in this. You need to apply SPF prior to application. I personally never rely on foundations, primers, or tinted moisturizers that have SPF since you would really need to apply a lot of it for proper protection. This is providing moisture so not any “skin benefits” outside of that. They aren’t marketing as having benefits outside of the fact it contains some really good moisturizing ingredients. I’m dry and use a moisturizing primer pre-foundation. If you applied a matte one prior you’d curb some of that moisture but you’d still get some hydration from it. the matte primer isn’t going to cancel out the hydration plus it’s sort of pointless to want to use a matte primer and a moisturizing foundation. if your concern is oil and you want a matte finish pairing a matte primer and a matte foundation seems the best course of action or vice versa if you are dry you’d want to pair up a moisturizing primer with a moisturizing foundation.

    thanks again~

    • Isabella Muse

I ADORE IT! Totally my jam! Not much in face powder tbh! But I’m intrigued ;-D Is it silky?!

      • Phyllis Reklis

Very silky~ I am not a powder girl either! this melted into my skin~ under eyes I used eye blending brush and on my face a very large powder brush..not settling into lines!

I can even tap my Miracle Balm or Lip and Cheek stick on top!!

        I have Yellow and Light!

thanks again for wonderful and honest and great work on this fav of mine place to come!!

I feel like her Jones Road products are very hit or miss for me. Her eye shadows and lip products are great and regularly in my rotation. Her What The Foundation was a huge fail. Thick, gloppy, and separated in the container almost immediately. I returned it. I heard her makeup brushes and the new powder are winners. I’ll probably try them next. But I’ll pass on this tinted moisurizer, just doesn’t appeal to me after my experience with the foundation.

    • Isabella Muse

I’ve tried the miracle balms and this so far and I like both. Thankfully no separation issues especially since it arrived during a really hot week in new york! My dry skin is digging it! Sorry it didn’t work out for you 🙁

  • F1wild

I’ve loved this Jones Road product since it came out. I only wish there were an SPF version as I’m a Stage 4 Melanoma Warrior.
    Cheers!

    • Isabella Muse

Wow! Good on you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I tend to never rely on SPF in my foundations! Always feel the need to apply it pre-makeup! 🙂
