Physicians Formula #InstaReady Concealer Review & Swatches

Physicians Formula #InstaReady Concealer ($10.99) is a new creamy, full coverage, long wearing concealer that launched with a blending sponge for Spring 2017 in 3 shades. Dryness has always been an issue with certain Physicians Formula concealers but no doubt all of them have always offered full coverage and many I’ve used and liked in the past. This influenced my purchase heavily and also, hey, I’m a concealer junkie no secret there.

Although, I must admit I worried this would be dry. But it didn’t prevent me from purchasing this right away.

Let’s take a look at my review and swatches.

Physicians Formula #InstaReady Concealer comes housed in a tiny 0.37 oz vial what with Physicians Formula calls a “pro blending tool” but it’s just a mini sponge much like the Swisspers Mini Blending Sponges I recently featured. This packaging is a little bit of a pain and is much like the packaging from an old Lola Concealer I used to have as well as the one that Lorac Undercover Lover Concealer. I was a little surprised, since I tend to use my fingers for application, that ended up using the blending sponge a good deal. It did come in handy! I will say the pump packaging sucks. It’s difficult to squeeze down on the pump and when it does work it spurts a big glob of concealer out which I find wasteful (see my swatch below and you can see what I mean as it pumps enough out to do my entire face).

So, I loved this! I was surprised how much I loved this. I did expect pigmented but I also came into it thinking it would be dry. It’s not, it’s actually very, very creamy and lightly hydrating. The texture is extremely thick but not as emollient as products like It Cosmetics Bye Bye Undereye Concealer. This doesn’t have that tacky, emollient texture that thicker concealers tend to sport. I like the texture a lot. The creaminess blends very easily under my eyes and the sponge helps to sheer the thickness of the texture out. As I said above, the sponge came in very handy as I tend to reply on my fingers most days for concealer application and I apply it with a “knocking” (patting briskly) motion. Don’t worry, if the sponge isn’t for you, that’s fine, you can still use fingers easily enough to apply this or your favorite concealer brush. There was no tugging at all, this was fairly easy to apply as long as my drier eyes had plenty of moisture prior to application. If you’re contouring under your eyes with this, I think you’ll be quite happy as this has a nice, brightening finish. This is quite pigmented but if you want lighter coverage it does sheer out considerably. It concealed my puffiness, my finer lines, and my darker circles easily. It didn’t feel or look cakey or mask-lik due to the heavier, creamier texture but it did crease a little it on the day I forgot to set it with powder. Once applied, the coverage lasts all day without fading. It’s definitely a good 10 hour concealer. Considering I use concealer under my eyes and not so much on my face I was happy that this contains an SPF 30. There are so few concealers and eye creams that have SPF in them. I appreciate the extra protection!

Sadly, the shade range is limited to three selections. The light was too light for me but medium was a good fit but I would have loved a lighter medium shade.

Physicians Formula #InstaReady Concealer is a great pick for those who enjoy thicker, pigmented concealers like It Cosmetics Bye Bye Undereye Concealer. If you’re used to working with concealers like this you should do great with it and I think it’ll become a fond favorite. However, if you like lighter concealers this might not be for you.

Personally, I loved it and I’m Muse Approving it. It’s quite lovely stuff.

Thanks for your review Muse. I ordered the fair shade from Ulta. I hope it is not too pale.

my pleasure! Light wasn’t quite for me, a little too pink! Medium was a bit dark so I mixed the two 😀

I picked up the Fair the other day but haven’t tried it out yet. I’m glad you like it!

  • Laurie

I ordered the fair from Amazon but they are having to replace it because the pump top doesn’t fit flush against the bottle and i am afraid it’ll dry out. That said, the color matched well when I tested it, and applied well with that tiny sponge. Yay!

My pump closed fine but it takes a lot of force to press it down which results in a big goob of product releasing out of it :-/

  • Marcia

I like this concealer, the only complain is that the fair shade is a bit dark.

The formula sounds great but I’m concerned about fair being too dark. I’m usually not the lightest shade of foundations but typically the second lightest. Do you know what MAC shade u are or can you tell me what shade you are in some foundations so I could get an idea if it’s too dark for me too?
      Thanks!!

Why why WHY does PF always seem to release so little shades of their products! Do they not realize how many people in the world have different skin tones?! I’m very fair, so the fair shade might work, but if not I bet the medium shade will be too dark! Why do they do this, it’s so annoying!

  • Lori

Agghh! I had this in my hand the other day and put it back! >.< Oh well, maybe next week… 😉

Sounds great! I love how Physician’s Formula incorporates SPF into just about everything. Their shades tend to work fine for me, but it does seem like they should take note of how many people are requesting a wider range of shades.

I picked this concealer up a few wks ago and I am so pleasantly surprised at how it has quickly became my go-to concealer above all my other faves!! The pump is a problem I have too. What I did was pump the concealer into an empty Sephora sample jar that I had lying around. That way I don’t keep wasting the product. Used to do this same thing when I used to use Mac Pro longwear concealer bc the pump on that one was wasteful too. That might help but hopefully they will fix this problem bc this stuff is great!! It covers my darkness really well and like you said, it’s very creamy. A little bit goes a long way!!

I’m really liking it too, but def trying your trick because I’m hating the pump!

I just bought the new Insta Ready setting spray and so far I think I like it as the mist is fine and seems to hold back shine and loss of makeup through a regular work day. Ceratainly much cheaper than UD

It’s really hard when the pump doesn’t work properly – it can put you off the product. But I am glad this works for you.
As others have mentioned above, why only a 3 shade range?

  • Wendy

I used this for the first time today — wow, I’m really impressed how nice it is. Usually PF concealers and foundation are too orange … but this is nice…great coverage, easy to blend. But I’m with you on the pump UGH.

Hey there! I am shopping for makeup for my wedding, and I was wondering if this concealer gives you a white cast in photos with flash? I was also wondering if you might have some product recommendations?

  • iolight

OMG: It’s mineral-based sunscreen in a concealer that doesn’t dry out the undereye area! This sounds like my holy-grail product– must check out like right now. Thank you so much for your detailed review!
