5 stars out of 5

E.L.F. Jelly Pop Dew Primer ($10) is a new gel makeup primer infused with watermelon extract that launched with the Jelly Pop Makeup and Skincare Collection the brand introduced early this month for Summer 2019.

I thought I’d repost this review as E.L.F. has re-released the formula for 2024 and it’s available now for ELF Beauty Squad Members (free to join) at elfcosmeitcs.com! It will also be available at ulta.com starting January 7th!

It seems like gel facial primers all the rage this Summer! I recently tried out Ciate’s London Watermelon Burst Hydrating Primer and maybe E.L.F. was a little inspired by it but I have to admit E.L.F.’s formula is a lot better.

E.L.F. Jelly Pop Dew Primer arrives in a rather fun bright red translucent tube with an attached pump. The tube holds 1 oz of primer and will set you back $10 which makes it a bit more expensive than some of the skincare picks in this collection like the Jelly Pop Water Gel Moisturizer and Jelly Pop Watermelon Cleanser which are both $8 each. This does contain a few more ingreidents in comparison though! Interestingly enough it is priced at $8 on Ulta.com but E.L.F.’s own website has it at $10!

According to E.L.F. this “grips makeup” and ensures it stays in place and although, “dew” is part of the name and used in a bit of the marketing I felt like it wasn’t dewy in finish at all. A lot of the reviews are saying that it works best for oily skin and I have to agree. I have drier skin but the Summer has been making me quite oily and shiny. And my current assortment of hydrating primers just add more shine. This didn’t. It actually felt cool, refreshing, and almost mattifying as it didn’t leave me with shine or oil but still provided light moisture that allowed my foundation to apply smoothly.

The texture is a thicker gel and it does have a strong watermelon candy fragrance which I found pleasant but might be an issue for sensitive users. It absorbs very easily and initially as I blend it feels a little sticky but it sets to a very smooth finish that feels soft but not dewy or tacky. It sets a nice canvas for the foundation to adhere to and doesn’t muck with the application of it. I even felt like the claims of “grips makeup” were true as my foundation looked amazing even after several hours of being in the heat during a festival I went to last weekend plus no shine or oil.

All in all, E.L.F. Jelly Pop Dew Primer turned into a very nice pick up! I dunno if I can use this in the cooler weather but it’s a great pick for the warmer one! Not to mention it didn’t leave me feeling slick the way Ciate’s formula did. It seems to add a nice soft element to my skin so my foundation sits on top of it nicely! Quite a nice little primer that I’m liking for Summer use!

E.L.F. Jelly Pop Dew Primer is new gel primer that’s packaged in a pump tube that is 1 oz in size and $8 to $10 depending on where you buy it. This has a thicker gel texture that absorbs easily into my skin and provides very lightweight moisture. I actually liked how it seemed to mattify and smooth skin and made for a nice, light base for foundation. It seemed to extend the wear of my foundation for a few extra hours especially in the heat without leaving me shiny or oily!

Aw man I was so feeling this until the watermelon candy scent :'(

I really like the idea of gripping primers and would love to see more companies making them, for comparison and competition if nothing else. So far all I know of them are Milk, CoverFX, J.One, and now this.

🙁 sorry! It’s a pretty strong scent! I got milk’s and this is a lot thicker in comparison and a lot less tacky compared to JOne!

    Hi Isabella!

This might be a silly question, but would I wear this under, or over, my sunscreen? I ask because normally I don’t wear primers and just let my sunscreen act as a primer. But e.l.f. has apparently brought this Jelly Pop Dew Primer back and I’d love to try it!
