The Oddest Business Deal Ever is Sephora at Kohl’s and Kohl’s Closing Stores Now

As you know Sephora entered a deal with Kohl’s to bring us Sephora at Kohl’s. Stores were completely revamped to create an entire Sephora experience within Kohl’s and even had their own entrances at theses locations.

I always thought JCPenny and Kohl’s was an odd fit for Sephora. Ulta was over there doing the most to woe Target and insert themselves into hundreds of Target locations and it felt like a marriage most perfect. But Sephora deciding hey, how about we go and partner up with Kohl’s felt like a marriage most unusual. I just associate Sephora with a certain luxury where as JCPenny and Kohl’s are a more affordable department store option. It didn’t seem a good fit.

Now things are even more tricky because Kohl’s is about to close 27 locations!

Kohl’s is closing 27 stores across more than a dozen states as the struggling retailer looks to improve profits. Is your Kohl’s closing? See a list of the stores closing below. The closings will be complete as soon as April. It’s actually a small amount of closings considering Kohl’s has 1,150 stores. I have to say all the Kohl’s stores I’ve ever been in are like tombs. I never see anyone in them even around the busy Holiday season. They just never seen to have taken off in my area. So, it does surprise me that it isn’t more than 27 stores! According to reports their sales have dropped over 40% in the last few months.

I don’t know if all the locations closing have Sephora’s inside them but I’m really interested to go do some research to see if they are and what this might mean for some cool deals and clearance on beauty. It just seems Sephora didn’t really think about all this before heading into a deal with Kohl’s.

I live down the street from the one in Fremont and I didn’t even know it was closing. That sucks..I don’t shop there often or really anywhere in person most of the time and that is the major problemo..

Kohl’s is super busy here in the upper Midwest, although the Sephora isn’t busy!

I have mmmm about five stores around me and all of them are super duper quiet!

Yes, that Preston Rd. store in Dallas is the one I go to. They never were my favorite, but they were relatively convenient and had a good selection of underwear, purses, towels, household decor, and Christmas items (including Hallmark). They used to be pretty popular, probably because of the convenience factor (they are part of a strip mall, not a regular mall). They used to give 50% off of Hallmark stuff right after Christmas, but apparently they’re not doing that anymore. The store wasn’t very busy when I went there on New Year’s Day. I do think it’s a shame about the Sephora they set up in there, as it hasn’t been there all that long.

The Kohls by me put a Sephora in just a few years ago…guess they didn’t see the STANDALONE SEPHORA STORE DIRECTLY ACROSS THE STREET?????!!!!! Who make these decisions??

    • Isabella Muse

agreed! Well, get this one, we have two chipotles within five minutes of each other and now they are opening a third one across the street from one of them LOL! Also, chick fil a we have two within five minutes of each other. Like wtf?

Kohl’s is quite busy here in southeast Michigan (suburban Detroit area). I see that there are no Michigan stores on the closing list, so maybe we love Kohl’s in the midwest. 🙂

sadly, our stores are kind of slow. I have five around me and all of them are sort of dead :-/

All the Kohl’s near me are bustling, bordering on crowded. I live in the city, in a large metro area, and it is VERY densely populated, so that may have something to do with it because in general, I often wish that MORE people would shop online so that when I go to stores I could park in the same county…

where are you from Holly? Curious minds! I’m NY but stores around me seem to be doing kind of blah!

I liked Sephora in JCP. One was one minute away from me and one in a mall I frequented, which also had a full Sephora. I shopped at both. I like Sephora in Kohl’s. One is 20 minutes from me. I’m glad it’s not one of the 27.

Not a fan of Kohl’s. Second rate clothing offerings. The Sephora in our store is staffed with what might as well be grocery store cashiers. When I go into a Sephora, I expect to see professionally attired and made up employees. Not the student working to pay off college debt. They usually aren’t wearing makeup at all with the exception of one person who had a ton of foundation in that was the wrong shade. I expect trained makeup artists who I trust to help me get the right products.

    • Isabella Muse

wow that bad an experience? Mine isn’t too bad but def not as professional as a Sephora stand alone store!

  • Cindy

The few times I’ve been to my local Kohl’s it’s been bustling. Especially at holiday time. I never understood the Kohl’s/Sephora or the JC Penny/Sephora partnerships either, but the Sephora setup I saw there looked nice. That store isn’t on the list to close.
