Ulta Halts Expansion Of Target Stores But Why?

Ulta Beauty is pausing expansion of its Target stores this year according to a variety of reports. As you well know Ulta struck a deal with Target in 2020 to create Ulta stores within the department store. At the moment there are over 600 Target stores that have and Ulta inside them and the plan was for 800 to be opened but at this time Ulta has decided to halt their expansion into Target stores. The idea was to provide a way to expose more customers to the Ulta experience and also, to make it convenient for current Ulta customers to grab their favorite items easily during a Target visit. According to reports more than 4 million Ulta shoppers have linked loyalty accounts to their Target store account.

There was no clear information why Ulta has made this decision but CEO Kecia Steelman stated, “In joint partnership with Target, we’ve made the decision to really lean into the 600-plus stores that are open this next year and really look at ‘How do we continue to drive efficiencies and leverage the learnings that we’ve had to really unlock value for both of us collectively together?” In March, Steelman also discussed sales decline amid “intense” competition and her plan to jump start sales going forward. It’s not officially addressed if declining sales is a factor in the halting of the store openings nor is the fact that Target is in the middle of some drama due to diversity issues. Target faced some major losses and boycotts after making the drastic chose to scale back its DEI program. That can’t be a good look for Ulta. Again, this wasn’t addresses in the statement about to pause in store openings but one wonders if any of it attributes to their decision.

Curiously, Sephora faces an interesting issue as well as Kohl’s is closing stores as well. According to reports none of the Kohl’s with Sephora inside will be closing but Kohl’s locations are closing none the less. 27 locations will be shutting their doors due to underperformance. I always felt the Sephora Kohl’s deal was an odd one but I felt the same about JCPenny. Sephora is very protective of their image and I just never felt either of those two stores was a proper fit for the image Sephora was so desperately protecting.

I’ll update you in further info as Ulta releases it about their choice to halt their Target store openings.

People are big mad at Target. I do think decrease sales is the main reason while also distancing themselves from Target’s PR problems. Even when things were going good for Target, I never really saw a lot of people in the Ulta section. They don’t carry the products that I can’t find almost anywhere else but Ulta like Nailtopia.
Personally, I’m only getting the basics from Target more like a buycott than a boycott. I never thought they squeaky clean and perfect. They wouldn’t have gotten this far if they were. But specially saying they were cutting back on black owned products was a bridge to far.

With reason. Target made a major mistake and so far haven’t truly owned up to it. And same here, I never see anyone at the Ulta part of the stores. I don’t even go in there as a beauty lover since 1. the beauty aisles at target are actually more interesting sometimes and 2. it’s really a cramped space and I feel like it’s hard to browse. Target needs to rethink what they are doing and do it fast.

Have you been inside a Target lately? They are SO GHETTO. Never stocked, things look like a F-5 tornado and a CAT 12 earthquake hit at the same time, NO STAFF (yet they have 26 check-out lanes) I wouldn’t want to be associated with them let alone partner with them.
Makes Sense that Ulta is holding off on expanding…………Target needs to get it together. I don’t even like going in the one in my area and I used to be Ride or Die for Target. The world is falling apart and target has totally collapsed. Also,

I live in Santa Clarita, CA, we have an Ulta and a Target( with Ulta) in the same strip mall. We also have a Sephora at our mall in Valencia and then right across the street, we have a Kohl’s with Sephora. Its crazy to me. You don’t need to post this comment.

of course, I’ll post this comment 🙂 I want to reply to you because same experience here. We have a target with an ulta and like two seconds away and ulta free standing store. Same for Sephora. It’s in Kohl’s and a two more sephora’s are minutes away. It’s so weird where they place the locations.

Ulta at Target in the Dallas/Plano/Frisco doesn’t carry as much product obviously as a regular Ulta carries, but I do look there just to see if they have updated the merchandise with newer items — which they don’t do very much, if at all.

There are a few new free standing Ulta’s here that have drastically improved the stores’ aesthetics and are bigger stores.

likewise. Most ultas in target in my area have a smaller scale of items. I tend not to bother looking as I find the area cramped. I’d rather just go to the store and look.

I totally agree, Isabella. Also, the cosmetic associates seem to be better trained and more knowledgeable than they were in the past.

I still tend to shop the larger Sephorasth the majority of the time, though, since i’m longtime Rouge, and I can always fund an associate that I have come to know well.

Right? It just seems small. Absolutely! The ones at Kohl’s are def a little clueless! Sephora has changed a lot around here 🙁 I used to know a lot of the same SAs but the last few years there is a constant rotation of different people! 🙁

I don’t know that the current target experience is conducive to selling mid-high range makeup, and Targets already had the drugstore products. It’s such a hectic and often dirty environment. I might test out shades of a product in a Target, but I’d probably purchase in a pure Ulta store or online.

I’ve heard that the Target/Ulta “Love Affair” ends in August. They have limited products in the lines they do carry. MAC has already been taken out here in the Dallas area, and Morphe has moved over to the regular Target cosmetic area.

I would much rather shop at the newer and bigger Ulta stores instead.
