There’s been a lot of Holiday Makeup and Gift Sets to drool over this year but there’s also been a lot of disappointments too! I thought I’d do a roundup of items I’ve tried so far that are hits and misses.

Here’s my Holiday Makeup Hits and Misses!

The Clarins Beauty Delights Advent Calendar (Review) is without a doubt a hit. This gorgeous advent calendar features 25 deluxe and sample size of skincare, makeup, and more from Clarins! It’s worth getting and gifting!

Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush Palette Color Wheel (Review) is a delightfully compact and portable way to tote around ten gorgeous blushes with you. This little guy surprised me as so far Tarte has had some very disappointing Holiday releases but not this palette! It packed some beautiful color blush options in one place that were pigmented, smooth, and easy to blend!

MAC Nutcracker Sweet Pink Lipstick Kit (Review) definitely delighted with four gorgeous shades of lipstick that all had a creamy formula and excellent pigment! Not to mention the super cute packaging!

NYX Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick Vault (Review) packed in value, variety, and WOW into this incredible Holiday Gift Set that features 36 of their Suede Cream Lipstick shades!

The Tarte Pretty Paintbox Collectors Makeup Case is a tempting morsel of a set but the eyeshadows disappointed with their sheerer, powdery formula and the face powders in this set proved very dense not to mention many of the shades were extremely repetitive. It’s one you can miss!

Four blushes? Sounds like an insta-like but the Tarte Sculpted Cheeks Amazonian Clay Blush Set proved a total miss. The blushes were incredibly stuff and a very poor representation of our beloved Amazonian Clay Blush formula.

The limited edition It Cosmetics City Chic Brush Set starts out life with a too high price tag not to mention the splitting issues the brushes had. This one was a skip for sure!

Speaking of It Cosmetics, their new Je Ne Sais Quoi Complexion Perfection Palette for Holiday 2016 seemed like a great pick up but sadly, the blush shade in this particular shade was very, very, very sheer which resulted in an overall disappointing experience.

Cute as it is the Too Faced Grande Hotel Cafe was a rather sore selection of eyeshadows and face powders that didn’t quite live up to the cuteness of the packaging! Don’t get sucked in by the “scented” palettes either because these were hardly fragranced at all!

Not to mention the Too Faced the Chocolate Shop was also a mediocre palette with a range of very powdery eyeshadows.

Hope these Holiday Makeup Hits and Misses helped you to narrow down your list of items you need and don’t need.

Do share some of your hits and misses from this season!

You know it’s gone too far when there’s been so many Holiday releases that you’re already doing a hits/misses post and IT’S ONLY NOVEMBER 1 ST!! Haha 😉

  • Nikki

Have you seen the Too Faced lipstick set with the makeup bag and 2 la creme lipsticks and one matte lipstick? I got that and love it! The makeup bag is a little cheap but 3 full size lips sticks for $29 is a bargain! Granted this is my first experience with Too Faced lipsticks but I like them. I also got the lipsculptor set from Tarte.

    • Isabella Muse

I did! I got the one from a few years ago but didn’t like it so I wasn’t a little scared of this years. I’ll have to check it out and see if I like this years 🙂 The LipSculptor set was def worth a haul!

I agree 100% with your review of the IT brush set. I bought that and was so disappointed I felt the handles were cheap and the quality of the brushes were poor. It is nothing like the regular sets or brushes found at ULTA….So sad! On my “hits list” were the Too Faced Macaroon palette (good quality and great colors) and the Bare Minerals lip set seen above, and that Anastasia Mario Palette is also great . Happy Holidays!!

🙁 The All That Glitters is a nicer set! I was so disappointed as It makes so many nice brushes! Happy Holidays 😀

The Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush Palette Color Wheel is my absolute favorite! i think it is has a great value 🙂 i always avoid to buy tarte eyeshadow palette sets of the holiday because i think they are not worth it.

Just received Clinique Indulge In Color palette. Nice – but Clinique appears to be just “repackaging” shadows from the regular line and some Ltd Edition colors from the 8 pan sets. Do not think there is a single new color – for this reason they do not list the colors on the info when trying to decide to buy it or not. Granted this palette will be awesome to travel with – the packaging (clutch like) is a little heavy for that though. If you have a lot of Clinique shadows, you should probably skip this one. Sorry Clinique – love you, but you need to step up your holiday game.

thanks Karen!!!!!!! I didn’t purchase it, I decided I wanted to see it in person! This helps!

I was at Ulta the other day and found a cute box of Tony Moly Mask sheets. There are 5 masks and all are “My Shea” and the individual mask envelopes have sayings like Share It, Love You, Be Happy. I think it was $15. It’s a hit for me.

I also got the L’ocitane Countdown calendar – I haven’t broken into it yet, but really want too!

I think you have correctly identified the definite misses of the season. Too Faced spends more effort on their packaging than they do on their products….
The only palette that I am aiming for this holiday season is the Lorac Rose Gold Pro Metals palette. Beautiful shades and consistently good across the board.
I love the Clarins Advent calendar and asked about it at my local Clarins counter and they had never heard of it…..oh my.
