Covergirl TruNaked Chocoholic Eyeshadow Palette Review and Swatches

Covergirl TruNaked Chocoholic Eyeshadow Palette is one of two scented eyeshadow palettes that launched with the Covergirl Peaches & Chocolate Collection which is available exclusively at Walmart for Summer 2018.

I was lucky enough to find both of the palettes on an end cap at Walmart this weekend as I really didn’t want to order them online as I know how poorly they pack makeup and was worried it would arrive broken. As you know there are also blushes, bronzers, and other goodies in this collection but the Walmart I visited didn’t have any of those available. Interestingly enough the display had two open tester palettes so if you wanted to swatch and play a little they were at your disposable. We all know testers at the drugstore aren’t exactly common! I was pretty surprised and delighted that they were thoughtful enough to have these available for anyone wanting to swatch them up in store.

Scented makeup seems the latest Summer trend with brands like Maybelline and L’Oreal releasing many different scented eyeshadow palettes as well as upcoming ones for Fall 2018. I just got a notice that my LOreal Cherry my Cheri Eyeshadow Palette launched and I just recently reviewed their Paradise Enchanted Scented Eyeshadow Palette plus they have an upcoming Berry Much Eyeshadow Palette all of these being scented.

As for Maybelline they released Lemonade Craze which is a lemonade scented palette and they have an upcoming Soda Pop Eyeshadow Palette which is scented like cola.

I have to admit I find the whole scented makeup thing rather novel. As a kid growing up with Sanrio, scratch n’ sniff stickers, etc…the idea of scented makeup is just really appealing and tickles my inner child. I mentioned a while back ago in my Too Faced Sweet Peach Eyeshadow Palette review I’d totally buy anything that Too Faced choose to scent. I think some of us went so far as to say wouldn’t a Pumpkin Spice Eyeshadow Palette be awesome or even an apple one. Too Faced never did go that deep with their “scented” options but obviously the drugstore makeup world is taking on the trend full speed.

And I love it!

Covergirl Chocoholic TruNaked Eyeshadow Palette ($10) comes housed in Covergirl’s all new pure white basic packaging. It’s a little stark and uneventful but I’m slowly getting used to it. The palette does come with a cute chocolate slipcover giving it the appearance of a chocolate bar. The TruNaked Eyeshadow Palettes originally launched with the Covergirl Spring 2016 Collection and I fell in love with them on first use. The eyeshadow texture and formula is one of my very favorites that’s available at the drugstore as it reminds me of Japanese eyeshadow from brands like KATE and Majorca Majolica.

Shadows like this are typically referred to as having a slurry texture due to the hybrid texture that has a creamy powdery feel. Although at the time it felt new and exciting the TruNaked Eyeshadow Palettes weren’t Covergirl’s first foray into this formula as they did have Eyeshadow Quads that launched in Spring 2015 with the same formula but it just seemed like that formula became better when the TruNaked Palettes came around.

Some people love this formula, others hate it. If you hated it in the past there is nothing new that the TruNaked Chocoholic Eyeshadow Palette brings to the table. It’s the same creamy powder texture as the original palettes and the only thing new is the fact that it is scented like chocolate. If you loved it before, you’re still going love it this time around.

Unlike the original palette Covergirl didn’t name each shade. I have to admit to some confusion due to this. Not because the shades weren’t named but they have a diagram in the back with three looks and they refer to the shades as C02, L3, CR7, L5. I don’t understand why they didn’t just refer to each shade as 1 through 8. Also the diagrams are somewhat useless as they don’t really give you an idea for color placement.

On that note, let’s discuss colors…

This isn’t a completely chocolate palette. There’s actually a lot going on here. It’s filled with four silky mattes and four shimmers. Out of those eight shades there are four that I’d consider chocolate where as the rest are purple, berry, and green. These are very, very rich, warm shades and I have to admit I struggled a little with them since there aren’t a lot of lighter transitional shades. It’s just a lot of dark, sultriness but there’s no break between. This did make me a little wary because I was concerned the shades would accentuate my finer lines and dark circles. Sadly, I was right! They do! You wanna conceal really well with these!

The formula is very soft and creamy but some of the shades do have chunkier fall out which makes for messy application. I struggled a little bit with the darker mattes as well as they applied a bit patchy but they did build well and I was able to blend and build which resulted in a smoother, more even look. The shimmers have the most fall out but the formula is the softest and easiest to apply with a smooth, easy glide on my drier lids. I think visually this palette is gorgeous but I didn’t quite have the skill to pull off a good look using just these shades. That disappointed me a little bit but I don’t regret the purchase.

As for the scent I found it pleasant. It’s pretty much the same scent Tarte and Too Faced used from some of their eyeshadow palettes and bronzers. It is fairly strong but it doesn’t linger once you apply.

Covergirl TruNaked Chocoholic Eyeshadow Palette is really a stunning palette I just wish it had a few more lighter transitional shades as I think that would make it much easier to work with. The formula has a few quirks but overall, the shades are creamy, pigmented, and fairly easy to work with. I’m glad I picked it up but I see myself possibly reaching for other shades or palettes in my collection to complete a look using this one!

Covergirl TruNaked Chocoholic Eyeshadow Palette is available now at walmart.com.

Pros

  • Anyone looking for dark, rich, sultry shades of eyeshadow.
  • Anyone who enjoys the texture of Japanese eyeshadows.
  • Anyone who finds the idea of scented makeup a novel and cute idea.

Cons

  • Anyone looking for an easy to apply eyeshadow palette.
  • Anyone who hates fall out.
  • Anyone sensitive to scented makeup.
  • Anyone seeking a solid, cohesive range of shades.

Who

Overall, the Covergirl TruNaked Chocoholic Eyeshadow Palette isn’t exactly a perfect selection of shades. I felt compelled to add in other colors from my collection to complete my look but I think the performance was fairly good with some minor quirks such as fall out and a bit of patchiness with some of the darker matte shades. You can get a really nice look from these shades as is but if you aren’t a perfect blender the darker shades might intimidate you as they are a little difficult to work with. I think people who enjoy dark, rich eye looks will enjoy this none the less!

You mentioned you got notice about the Cherry My Cheri palette launching. I was doing an internet search this morning for it and could only find it in the UK. What is your intel?

Regarding this palette, I’ll have to see it in person but I can say this: I still hate CG’s new packaging. It just looks so generic, like a no-name brand you’d find at a dollar store. IDK, maybe it’s just me…

    • Isabella Muse

I posted about it several weeks ago and said it was available at amazon as a pre-sale: https://www.musingsofamuse.com/2018/04/loreal-cherry-my-cheri-eyeshadow-palette-looks-like-a-slurry-formula.html I ordered it that same day and yesterday I got a notice it shipped. No special intel just browsing on amazon after purchasing the Paradise Palette and it was recommended to me. 🙂 It is very uneventful for Covergirl and a little stark. I’m slowly getting used to it!

      • Carol G

Ok, thanks. I tried searching it today on Amazon and cannot find it. Wonder if they sold out of it and are waiting for a re-stock…

        • Isabella Muse

it actually oddly disappeared within days of it appearing. I guess it sold out. I imagine they’ll relaunch later this summer and give it a more mass retailer launch at that point!

  • Monika

Hi, just wanna say your ‘about the muse’ section above made me lol …I feel 100% like you do about the HG we hope to never find!! plus it would just get discontinued anyway & I too enjoy long walks down the clearance aisle at Ulta your ‘sure as hell isn’t a supermodel’ comment cracks me up too, thanks for the laugh…love your reviews!

    • Isabella Muse

lol ;-D Glad to hear I’m not alone with the chase. That’s part of the thrill of makeup. And too true, you finally found your holy grail item and suddenly they are like ok clearance time for something new ;-D hehe glad I made ya laugh ;-D xoxoxo!

I found this yesterday on an end cap at Walmart too, and actually bought it – because they had (drum roll, please) TESTERS. Never. Seen. Testers at Walmart before. You’re right about the lack of transition shades, but I didn’t find the shimmery shades accented the wrinkle (I’m past the fine lines stage….) because a lot of the shimmery-ness appeared to disappear upon blending. Weird..

But WHAT is up with the useless instructions on the cardboard sleeve and the bottom of the palette?? I’m sorry – I don’t speak gibberish very well – and since CG doesn’t tell you which shade is CO2, L3 or R2D2, I haven’t a clue how I’m supposed to put them on in that order SINCE YOU DIDN’T LABEL THEM. (whew, there…. I’m all better now…..) 😡 Nevertheless, for $10, it was a fun purchase, and I think I’ll get a fair bit of use out of it. 🙂 Didn’t really get a lot of fallout either, but b/c I recalled you saying the TruNakeds were pretty soft, I applied all but the crease shade with mah finner… Worked pretty well, too! 🙂

    • Isabella Muse

lol did you read the post?! I mentioned testers 🙂 No issues with disappearing but had a bit of patchiness with the darker mattes. Yup, ranted about that here too. I don’t get what they are referencing! It was really weird. Completely Greek to me. I’m glad it worked out for you overall ;-D wahooo!

      • kimkats

yah, I did read it – I guess I was just so excited that I missed the line about testers. And even when there are supposedly testers available, it seems like they’ve been stolen from this store, which is kinda odd as it’s not near as nasty as a lot of WalMarts are. Like you, I so do not get their “directions” for a specific look – which color is what?? C’mon CG – give me a hint, at least!!

        • Isabella Muse

LOL ;-D I was wondering if you just looked at the photos and skipped the text haha! the testers I ran into were actually swatched but not a big nasty mess which surprised the hell out of me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Agreed on the “directions”. I mean can they even be called directions!?

    • kjh

Actually, i’m totally fluent in gibberish, and still have no clue wtf what the ‘codes’ mean. If it were OC, i’d think outer corner, l for lid, cr =crease. But, whatEVer, use it how you want, and then vary it a couple of four times. And did I get that right, the cherry ma Cherie went from presale to sold out? Some days it seems the makeup landscape was created by surrealists. If somebody did a Dali palette with melting clocks, or a Magritte with raindrop men, you get the idea….i’d Totally be there.

  • Cara

Been hoping for this and the Peach palette review – thank you! Maybe the confusing labels are actually trying to tell you placement? So L3 means put shade 3 on your lid; CR7 means put shade 7 in your crease, etc.? I don’t know what CO would stand for, but using that system it would be a matte every time. Maybe a transition shade, or “conceal” lid?

  • Kish

I looked for these today at Ulta, but nothing yet. I also checked a Walgreens and CVS lol. I really want the peach one. The brown looks gorgeous on you!

    • Isabella Muse

The collection is exclusive to walmart at the moment and I THINK the shadow palettes might branch out to other drugstores at some point but not the blushes/rest of the items. You might want to check walmart first as they seem to have early dibs on the palettes!

  • Danielle

Hey girl, loved the review. I also found these over the weekend, but I had to order online. Peel up the back label to the info sheet-it explains a lot! I was confused too until I did!

    • Isabella Muse

OH wow thanks! I didn’t even see it!? When I get home going to look at it!!!!!!!!!!!

  • genevieve

I don’t really go for scented eyeshadow palettes in general – if I want a scent, I would choose a perfume. However, this palette looks pretty good for a DS one and I like the shades.

  • Adrienne

I know this is a little late but our Walmart is always late in getting things. I didn’t see these on a special display but mixed in with other items and after your swatches I passed on these and picked up their other new palettes sunsets and blaze. Did you see those new ones or am I late on those colors?

    • Isabella Muse

I got the sunset one too! It was in the same display as the peach/chocolate ones. It’s a new color selection for Summer 🙂

      • CarrieAnne

I bought Sunset but I don’t recall seeing a promo for Blaze? Maybe I just skated past. I had the palette transported for pickup at my local Wally World. I agree, the shipping destruction is iffy. At least if I go to pick up and it’s shattered, I can refuse it and wait for a replacement. I think the Sunset (unscented) shade selection makes a little more sense and it’s not heavy on shimmer shades. But did need a separate highlight!

        • Isabella Muse

wait, I got confused. Isn’t it called sunset blaze or is there a sunset and a glaze!? I got the sunset for sure!

  • Marie

I love the colors, but I have a big caveat about this formula. Check the shelf life notation on the back which is only six months! This really irritates me as there is no way that I could even half use a large palette like this in that period of time unless it was my only eye shadow. That is the main reason that I never purchased the TruNaked palettes again after my first try. I guess you could ignore it, but then you might be risking an eye infection.

It’s puzzling as most powder eye shadows are safe for at least a year and more usually two..

    • Isabella Muse

Yeah I noticed that 🙁 Honestly, I had one of the pink palettes over a year and thankfully formula didn’t morph nor did I get an eye infection! I noticed a lot of products lately have 6 mon life span! The one that pisses me off the most is Drunk Elephant. Their expiration is fasttttttttttttt!

  • Angelina

Hey just wanted to let you know that the peel for tips part actually shows all of the names and parts on what to do for the covergirl chocoholic eyeshadow pallete, I actually just found that out lol.

  • JoJo

I like the fact this doesnt have transitional shades, because I get more back g with my buck having deeper colors. I like the applicator it comes with. It has a pointy applicator, which I like for lining. I just tried it today. I hope the scent doesnt give me an allergy, since its chocolate. I really like the CG trunaked palettes. I didnt know Japanese eyeshadows were this consistancy. I purchased the palette Roses about 4 years ago, because I couldn’t afford the UD one. Plus this smaller size fits in my purse easily. I guess I’m odd, but I do like sponge applicators.
