Why I’m Old School and Prefer Physical Exfoliation Over Chemical Exfoliation

I receive a small commission if you shop through my link.

Committing to an exfoliating technique is a lot like a good relationship. Sometimes they’ll be messiness, sometimes they’ll be pain, but in the end you’ll come out of it glowing. Deciding on a physical or a chemical exfoliating product is the hardest part.

I have dabbled in the world of BHAs, AHAs, Lactic Acids, newfangled PHAs (which I’m convinced are a made up version of a BHA on a low calorie diet), etc… I just don’t do acids well. I have a very extensive skincare routine and adding in acids can sometimes be tricky when you’re playing around with a lot of different products on your face. Yes, you can rotate every other night what you’re using but acids just aren’t something I’ve ever really committed to. We never had any long term relationship together. As I get older I keep saying to myself that I’ll stop with the physical exfoliation and start going the chemical route but here I am still in a full time relationship with my favorite facial scrubs.

I have to be doing something right even without an acid in my routine as my skin is in excellent condition and I don’t look my age in the least.

Urban Decay Naked Ultraviolet Eyeshadow Palette I Don’t Think I Need You In My Life

I receive a small commission if you shop through my link.

Urban Decay Naked Ultra Violet Eyeshadow Palette got an oddly early launch over on Cult Beauty today. It officially arrives on US shores starting June 17th. We all knew colorful Naked Palettes were coming. Naked Honey and Naked Cherry were just the tip of the iceberg here! With the original Naked Eyeshadow Palette gone but never forgotten it’s logical enough that Urban Decay is going to ride this train to the very ends of the universe. Not to mention people were legit upset that Urban Decay had gone so tame in recent years so, palettes like Cherry, Honey, and Ultraviolet are all Urban Decay’s original gangster MO.

Do we need the Urban Decay Naked Ultraviolet Eyeshadow Palette? I actually don’t. GASP! Shock! I know right?

If my mother wore makeup I’d probably tell you I’ve turned into my mother because she seems like she’s be a bare minimal type of girl. That’s me. I’m all about nude lately. I just like a really nude, natural look. Not to mention since this pandemic started I go even lighter with my makeup because face mask+Summer+makeup=hot mess.

Long gone are the days where I’m squealing over a purple eyeshadow palette. Did I ever? I don’t think I did. Purple wasn’t always a shade I had fits over. I know some people LOVE it but I’m not really all that into it. Can I make a suggestion for a moment? This big brown eyed girl would like a Naked Green Palette. Anyone have a suggestion for a name? Olive greens, hunter greens, all the greens to flatter my brown eyes please! K, thanks. You might see that come Fall 2020.

I know Urban Decay will send me a press sample of Naked Ultra Violet and I’m looking forward to digging into it but I’m not sure how impressed I’ll be with it. I find the assortment of peachy neutrals combined with lilacs and purples a little mismatched. Ok, ok, I know. You can’t have a completely purple palette there needs to be some transition otherwise you’ll have the issues we had with the Naked Cherry Eyeshadow Palette where we had to bring in other shades to blend things out well. But the color story here just doesn’t quite jive well in my opinion. I’d likely struggle with it a bit. I mean they threw a mint shade in here. But why though? That’s actually Lucid one of the shades that has a holographic shimmer finish. It has a holographic green pearl shift that can be worn alone or over purple to give it an ultraviolet light effect.

The palette contains 12 total shades in matte, metallic, and holographic shimmer finishes. The holographic shimmers work like a duochrome in their ability to shift. I’m actually in the minority as I really don’t like shifting shades. Sorry!?!

Shades:

  • Trippin
  • Mind Slip
  • Dazed
  • Hacked
  • VR
  • Lucid
  • Optimized
  • Warning
  • Cyber Punk
  • Euphoric
  • Purple Dust
  • Digital

Die hard Urban Decay fans can grab the Urban Decay Naked Ultraviolet Eyeshadow Palette today at Cult Beauty (they ship worldwide).

Let me know if you plan on grabbing it.

Would love to hear your opinion on it.

As A Millennial It’s Your Responsibility To Put Avocado In Your Hair

I receive a small commission if you shop through my link.

Apparently millennials are spending way too much money on avocados. Bred, born, native New Yorker here meaning we pay $16 bucks or more for avo toast on a good brunch day. What the hell are we thinking? I’m almost positive I can do avocado toast for $2-4 bucks at home but I’m too scared I’ll burn the house down attempting it. Listen, I can burn boiling water over here. Adulting is hard enough bring cooking into it and I’m so scared I need you to hold me through it.

Avo toast, guac, and avocados being millennial makes it your meal of choice and a total stereotype but it sure is a fun one right? I just wrinkled my nose up and laughed a little. Sorry.

Speaking of avocados, did you know avocado oil helps hydrate your scalp and promotes to strengthen your hair while promoting growth. Briogeo knew that! That’s why they created the new Be Gentle, Be Kind Avocado + Kiwi Mega Moisture Superfoods Hair Mask which is not just for millennials.

Briogeo Be Gentle, Be Kind Avocado + Kiwi Mega Moisture Superfoods Hair Mask is a new nourishing hair mask that acts to soften hair. It’s a great pick if you have longer, wavy hair like my own as it smooths and hydrates locks while helping to retain moisture. It contains avocado, kiwi, and spinach. After shampoo just apply a generous amount to your wet hair and leave it in for five to ten minutes before rinsing it out.

It’s on my list to try!

Pat Mcgrath at TJ Maxx is Apparently a Thing Now

Hi there I’m addicted to Home Goods and that sort of extends to TJ Maxx too kind of?! You don’t understand how much I miss Home Goods. This is a source of many, many text conversations with my bestie Sam. We’re all over here holding our breath waiting for it to re-open but I have a feeling I’ll be too paranoid to actually go when it does.

I miss Home Goods more than I miss Nordstrom, more than I miss Sephora, more than I miss Target (I’ve been to Target but it’s a horrifying experience where I run around the store trying to dodge people because I’m convinced sharing any open space with anyone is going to mean I’ll catch something! Which means Target runs are sadly lacking over here and I miss it so much!). Lucky enough, the first place I hit at Target is the Hearth & Hand section and like, no one is ever there showing Joanna any love but me. I dunno why I head there first! I think I’m convinced Joanna personally comes into my Target on the daily to re-arrange the display and put out new stuff for me to throw my monies at. I am so not that person that’s paranoid or anxious but COVID has unlocked a paranoia level I’ve never experienced before in my life. I’m throwing it out there to the people who face anxiety and paranoia on the daily you’re my hero because I had no idea what you were dealing with until COVID-19 decided to pop into my life like a bad friend. I did go to Trader Joe’s last week and I was so excited how it was all handled even though I had to wait about 30 minutes to get in. Hell, I’ll wait as long as they keep the store half full and the carts sanitized. A girl needs her chocolate gnocchi, Cookie Butter, and Organic Riced Cauliflower. (P.S. I’m still trying to understand the Savory Banana & Nuts Trek Mix hype!).

Anyway……

I’m also sort of jealous of all you guys out there shopping. Not a lot has opened here yet. I ran across an account on Insta today that showed the Pat Mcgrath’s Mothership VI: Midnight Sun on sale at TJ Maxx for $89.99. I legit think my head exploded. You know TJ, sometimes there are some sick finds to be had. I mentioned a few weeks ago how much the luxury beauty brand world might be changing due to the pandemic but I really didn’t think it was going to go this far. If you told me I was going to walk into TJ and find Pat Mcgrath Eyeshadow Palettes I would call you a liar.

But here we are…..!

Does Pat Mcgrath popping up at TJ Maxx devalue the brand’s image?

Are you excited to see if you can score it at your local TJ Maxx?

It’s a New Day How Are You Going To Help Change the Makeup World?

Good Morning!

How’s life treating you over there? New York has been…interesting. We’re in a phase opening system at the moment and we’re taking baby steps to get everything back up and running right now. We were labeled the epicenter of the virus and I think most folks living here in Gotham were convinced at some point zombies would begin trolling the streets of the city. I’m still convinced that might happen. I mean, we’ve had everything else why not a Walking Dead experience?

Stores like Sephora, Ulta, etc…are still locked up tight. I think people are most concerned about the MTA and commuting. You know, there’s some irony that people are scared to take the subway because of germs. Dude, the subways have always been home to some interesting critters making COVID-19 the least of our worries. Exhibit A: Pizza Rat. Exhabit B: Egg McMuffin Rat (although, I believe this was a set up and a PR stunt by Mcdonald’s to gain more of a following haha!) No, but seriously, commuting is an issue for a lot of folks. Ubers, subways, buses, it all makes everyone a little tense. Shout out to the taxis out there still working. These guys were probably hit the hardest. The value of a TLC medallions hit pay dirt when Ride Sharing hit Manhattan and many, many guys suffered hard. Uber bankrupted some of them. Check the stats on suicides in New York and taxi drivers it’s pretty sad. In 2012, a TLC medallion was worth about a million bucks. It’s dropped dramatically when Ride Sharing popped up. Before COVID it hit an all time low of $200,000 and now with COVID? It must be worth even less. And through it all of it these guys are still out there being creative with how they protect themselves and anyone who enters their cars. They have to work, they have to feed their families, pay for their car rentals/leases, dues for their bases, etc… They move New York but New York is at a standstill and not moving very much at the moment but they are still out there on the daily. It’s pretty sad.

Moral of the story, there’s not a lot we can do about COVID-19 at the moment. We can only do our best to wear a mask, social distance ourselves from others, and try to prevent the spread of the disease.

We can however, do something right now, this very second, about the Black Lives Matters movement in the makeup world.

Someone left me a comment yesterday and she said she didn’t feel like she was doing enough. That what she was doing felt meaningless. Don’t feel that way. The smallest thing you do today can bring about the biggest change in the future. If we all do one small thing it accounts for one major thing and that’s how life, the universe, and everything changes.

Right now brands are making a lot of promises to change the way they do beauty. Tarte’s already made a major admission they know they can do better and plan to do better. Other brands are promising much of the same. I urge you to use your social platforms to tell them you’re listening and you want more from them. In a few months from now if you don’t see the changes they promise call them out on it. If you feel their foundation range is lacking tell them that! If their latest palette only flatters one skin tone call them out on it! Demand more. I admit I have not been as vocal about this as I should be and I plan to change that. I’ve already written up a mass e-mail I plan to send to several brands I’ve worked with in the past and brands that I think aren’t doing enough and explain to them that the promises they make now will shape the beauty world of the future. Sending a mass e-mail feels like such a small thing to do but I feel like even if it reaches on person out there maybe it’ll make them understand I’m listening and putting hope in them that they will keep the promises they are making across their social media accounts.

The beauty world has evolved in the last four years to a very inclusive point but there are still many, many changes to be made. I do have a controversial view when it comes to certain movements in the beauty world. Two of which I feel very strongly about are men in makeup and inclusivity. I have sadly always felt that many brands jumped on board with men in makeup just because it was the thing to do not because they felt like it was a movement they supported. In 2016, James Charles was selected as the first Coverboy to represent Covergirl but prior to that many other male influeners were already making a name for themselves in the makeup world. It felt like many brands started supporting them to gain new followers. I feel the same about inclusivity. It Cosmetics for example trying to include a larger shade range but failing rather miserably at it. It just feels like some brands are doing things for the sake of doing them and not putting a lot of though and attention into a release. It’s like, “Oh let’s do some darker shades because this is what sells!” versus “Oh let’s do a darker shade range because there are girls and guys out there that need these shades and the market is sadly lacking in them!” I just wish some of these topics they address aren’t just ones they select because they are trendy or will gain them a more diverse group of followers or extra revenue. I want them to do it because they genuinely care about their consumer base.

Write your favorite brands, tweet them, @ them on Facebook, tell them what you want from them, what you expect, what changes you want to see. Believe me if they see enough of us doing this they will listen and those changes will become a reality.

Good luck! As always I’m counting on you to be the good humans I know you are!
